I was a few rows in front of the heckler. After 'Scandinavia' Morrissey started talking about the Belgian royals and went on about Kate Middleton. At the end of the speech some guy shouted "Just play us a song man!" in a quite derogatory manner as if bored. Morrissey reacted immediately and was obviously quite upset. He said:"Oh shut up! f*** off! ... I don't want to sing now." Then he asked for the houselights to go on and asked the heckler to make himself known. He did and it was an ugly middle aged balding guy with a red sweater. He was grinning and waving his arms in the air, obvioulsy enjoying his five minutes of fame. Morrissey called him out several times and dared him to come on the podium and sing us a song. The guy didn't move only called "I sing better than you!", but I think this got lost in the talking that had started to build in the hall at that time. Morrissey then called him a coward several times and then said "Just go away. Have I ever done that?" The heckler was really a big twat, cause later during 'Mountjoy' which was a really intimate beautiful moment he started screeching very loudly during the song and not in a cheering way but making a very harsh annoying sound, apparantly in attempt to ruin the ballad. And it did sort of ruin it for me. Morrissey went on and played a few more songs, but obviously way shorter than should have been. No HSIN, no MIM, no encore. It's such a shame because Morrissey had been in such good spirits, talking a lot to the crowd (about cyclists in Antwerp, about the 12 year old boy that got shot by police in Cleveland - he dedicated 'Asleep' to that boy-, and about the royals). At the moment I feel absolutely no anger towards Moz at all, only to the heckler who semi-ruined a great evening for all those hundreds of fans. In a way I was even glad Moz went on at all after that cause when he said "I don't want to sing now" I feared the show was over. We know he reacts very emotianal to these kind of shout outs, obviously there's a few twats who enjoy the negative attention and don't care about Moz or all the other people at the venue. I keep thinking what overly sedated people we Belgians are, if this had happened at a Moz concert in some places in the world I think the bystanders would have shoved the heckler out of the venue, but here people just gave him a few weird looks.
A few other moments. At some point during the show somebody shouted:"I love you!" and Moz quipped:"And are you seeing a psychiatrist?" I also want to mention the superb version of 'Asleep' for which he got a big ovation.
All in all a great evening, shame we missed out on a great finale due to the bald red sweater twat.

For everyone outside of America is the world who say Americans are rude and obnoxious. I have never seen Morrissey get heckled at a USA show. You Euros make me sick.

Fans are in love with Moz in the USA. Any heckler would get punched by members of the crowd.

Mountjoy planned for Dublin then. That's something U2 would do. How was it? Did Jesse play acoustic guitar? At least the bar will be empty.

Can someone buy him the how to deal with hecklers manual for Christmas? I believe on page 152 it suggests singing new Viking themed ditties in Belgium may antagonise beer drinkers. Particularly those on Trappist beers.

.....because it would neither be rude nor obnoxious to make sweeping generalisations about Europeans?

The guy who shouted maybe did a stupid thing, but reacting as Morrissey did was even more stupid, childish and unprofessional.
I must admit the band was great, sound very powerful, and performance very strong, but what Morrissey is doing is politic speeches and not a good show, and refusing encore is just disrespectful.
This is my personal opinion and those who think otherwise don't even bother to reply.

I really liked the show despite the abrupt ending, why oh why do people bother to pay to see an artist in order to heckle him during the show?

What a sad life they must have.

A very pertinent question to ask on this site. Ask Johnny Barleycorn, Brummie Boy, Skylarker etc

I was there tonight,
" Mountjoy " and "Smiler with knife" where great. ( smiler sounds super live )
Morrissey sings also a different song (to me ) in the break of " Speedway" anyone who knows the title of this song ?
The show of tonight was short but really good.

Thanks for your review. And good for Moz. Glad to see Smiler and Mountjoy added to the setlist.

Wow - that's all someone said to get Morrissey to turn the house lights on and try and get him to leave? Damn. All the invective he spews against other people, but Morrissey himself is so psychologically fragile. What a diva.

Morrissey was really fine tonight, the audience was very subdued though in no way unappreciative. M and the band very good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's not the point. It's disrespectful. Simple as that. As someone who has worked as a stage actor before in three states, I can tell you that it is not easy when you have idiots in your audience who feel it is necessary to interact with you (or in my case, my character) while trying to get lines out. It's disruptive and very, very frustrating. And, that's on a small scale. I can't even begin to imagine how it makes someone like Morrissey feel. He's a guest in a city and thousands of people pay to see HIM and here's this little fool trying to purposefully upset him AND his audience. Yeah - I can see how that would infuriate him.

Why wasn't the idiot heckler just removed from the venue? Couldn't Morrissey have had security escort him out?

For the simple reason this was a big guy and not some small asian guy living in LA.

The mood on stage was definitely out of order long before anyone shouted anything. Band seemed tense, no smiles, no joy. And the way the setlist was composed this looked more like testing the audience than getting a gig going. Moz turning away from the people every now and then to watch the band play for a while, looking bored. He must have realised the night before that noone in the venue showed any interest in the way he communicates his opinion about politics, policemen and lawyers and still he had to start again. Considering the way he was forcing himself to communicate with the audience after quite a while into the set, telling the guy to f*** off later seemed like an occasion for him to vent a general discontentment about whatever. I read a lot on this forum that people are asked why they pay money to provoke the artist. Yesterday in Antwerp I asked myself why an artist comes to play a gig despite looking like feeling uncomfortable to be there from start. Saw the man in concert about 20 times and he never confirmed all the prejudice about him, excellent performer. I even do not need Smiths songs on his gigs. But yesterday was a joke.

he knows the political speeches will get a reaction, affording him the opportunity to exit whenever it suits him.
these smallish crowds must be doing the trick.

Did the "frankly vulgar red pullover" thing really happen or am I drunk on Zin and not reading the trolling right?

I really liked the show despite the abrupt ending, why oh why do people bother to pay to see an artist in order to heckle him during the show?

What a sad life they must have.

Maybe they are not in fact heckling, maybe they are simply providing a robust intellectual and moral challenge to Morrissey, and therefore providing an important service to the world?

Of course it's a completely plausible idea, just ask JB.

Anyone have a video of him telling the fan to f*** off? Id love to see that. He's hot when he swears.
