I liked it at the time. It came out within a few weeks of YOTQ actually, which is funny to think about. At the time, I may have liked it MORE than Quarry! Which is insane as now I still listen to Quarry regularly and haven’t listened to s/t Cure in a decade.

I still need to see them live.

That is funny. I did not realize that--I never really thought of them as contemporaneous albums though I guess I did realize it on some level.

I remember listening to that one again and again when it came out and I still to it from time to time (I have it in the car I think). Maybe it's not technically their best, but I think it is great to listen to--I really liked Labyrinth and Alt. End.

I'm not sure how many times I've seen them (too lazy to cross-check a gigography right now!), but it's got to be around 20 shows at this point. They're the only band I've traveled to various parts of the country to see. I can't wait for the next set of Trilogy concerts, which I assume would be The Top, Head on the Door and KMKMKM—a truly bizarre (in the best way) collection of songs!

Fred, they did do a Philly show in 2008, but you're probably going to have to travel a bit if you want to see them at this point. They're not likely to ever do a world tour again. For the last decade, they've mainly headlined festivals, done their massive Trilogy shows in a few cities around the world, and focused on localized smaller mini-tours. If you can swing it, go to see them the next time they're within a few hours of Philly (which would most likely be NYC). You'll get your money's worth, I promise. ;)

NYC would be totally doable. We're already banking that if Morrissey tours again, NYC is going to be where we have to go to see him, so why not see The Cure there too someday? haha

Last time I went to NYC was to see Bob Mould at the Bowery in February of 2013. It was great.

When I was in a band, we recorded almost all of our stuff at a studio in Brooklyn, too.

They are definitely worth the way to NYC from Philly!!!

I worked in the UK for a while in 1996 and managed to get hold of tickets in Germany some months before. That was quite a challenge, AGES before you could inform yourself and order on the internet and pay online.

Well, rumor has it the next Trilogy shows will either be late this year or early next year! I assume they'd do LA and NYC again like they did with Reflections. They have Riot Fest (Toronto/Chicago/Denver) next month, but the rest of the year is clear. Fingers crossed!!

I have heard every Cure album besides the last one, and “The Top” for some reason! Weird. I’d love to see Kiss Me and Head On The Door live.

As for the studio, it was called Atomic with a guy named Dean Baltulonis. We went there three different times. He was a pleasure to work with. Really laid back. He moved it to NH and it’s now called The Wild Arctic. He did all of the Hold Steady stuff besides this last LP. Here’s from the website:

Dean Baltulonis is a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in music production and engineering. He has worked with a wide variety of bands including The Hold Steady, Ra Ra Riot, Skylarkin, Brand New, The Explosion, The Gay Blades, Hussle Club, World Inferno Friendship Society, Piebald, The Oxford Collapse, Sick of it all, Trapped Under Ice, Agnostic Front, Madball and Most Precious Blood

The Top is a drug-fueled, weird mess of an album, but it's great in its own way. Along with the "dance singles" (The Love Cats, Let's Go to Bed, etc.) that came out the year before, it really serves as a perfect bridge between the bleakness of earlier albums and the lush, dark-pop sound of HotD and everything after. I can't think of any other band whose sound changed and developed in such a short period of time as the Cure's did between 1982 and 1985. The Top also gave us one of the best live opening songs ever with "Shake Dog Shake."

Cool! It's funny, my husband is a BK musician and is into several of these bands, but he doesn't know the studio! How long ago did he move to NH?

Sounds like I need to get my hands on “The Top” then. :)

I’m not sure when he moved, truthfully. I know that we recorded there in 2002 and then twice in 2004. I think he actually moved to another place in NY sometime after that, and then NH later on, because he did the Hold Steady album from 2010 in NYC.

im a on the fence casual fan of the cure. like the idea of the band and some albums songs but dont really dive in that much. i own and listen occasionally to boys dont cry (the debut with the singles), faith (my fav) and head on the door. dont care for disintegration as i like the songs but feel theyre surrounded by two min each of pointless boring spacious ambient sound. thats usually the recommendation i get from people but what do you guys as fans of the band think i should try next. they have so many albums and directions im just wondering if theres another album by them out there that might fit with my tastes. thinking about wish but if anyone has any better ideas feel free to suggest

I'm a pretty rabid Cure fan and Disintegration is my favorite album (by anyone), so you might not want to take my recommendation, but I think you should give Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss me a shot. It has some of the same pop sound as HOTD, interspersed with some of the darkness of their earlier stuff. It's a spectacular album. Also, since you said Faith is your favorite, check out Seventeen Seconds. They're definitely in the same vein, but Seventeen Seconds is a little more sparse/raw.

hmm ill consider but ive heard those before and didnt really care for them (though its been a while so ill check them out again). seventeen seconds was indeed way to sparse without the melancholy greyness of faith to make it work for me and kiss me etc was to all over the place and not cohesive enough (a double album) and while i really like some songs i dont care for grab bag albums so to speak. tried out the top cause someone mentioned it above and it was one i hadnt heard of. might not have tried it out yet becuse of the low all music review but that sounded kinda cool from what i heard on youtube. how do you feel about bloodflowers? i almost wanna try that one for the cover alone.

My three favourite Cure albums back to back? DROOOOOLLLLLL!!!! :yum:

If this actually happens I will explode and pay any amount of money Bob wants me to!

so i ended up buying the top which is pretty great. someone mentioned dance songs but i didnt hear them so maybe what i think of as a dance song isnt the norm. super good though and it seems to be the first with better production. almost went with pornography but it sounded way to much like joy division which is a band i only mildy like though admire

OK, that was GREAT. How fun! I love Robert's voice so much...and it's really suited to that song.

I'm assuming this must have been recorded and filmed a few years ago, during that weird period of time when the Cure were temporarily a three-piece right before Roger came back.

Edited to add: I've always loved the way the Cure approach cover songs, going back to Foxy Lady. They never take it too seriously—it's just a fun time. Especially in the back of a van (skip to 3:44)...

I thought it was a great cover too. From the article I couldn't tell if it was recorded a while ago or not, but judging by what you said and the fact that it said something like "finally released" I guess so!

so thanks to my 15 years younger than flatmate I am having a Cure renaissance as it were
he's mainly into old punk rock and weird rap like Goldie Lookin Chain, he's Welsh, so watcha gonna do :p
but yeah, we both connect on the Cure which is good, especially a couple of songs which have become a part of our going out ritual:

&

thankfully he already also loved:

one of my faves
and I have successfully exposed him to some later Cure like

I never really thought much of "Burn" until I saw them do it live for the first time ever in New Orleans last year. WOW!! It sounded like something off of Pornography. Totally amazing to be in the front row for that. :D

cool, and yeah, gotta say with Tom I am glad I finally found a band he was jealous I've seen a number of times :p
I know, its pathetic, but my pre 2011 concert going resume is one of the few things I've got going for me
