"In the Words of Sparks..." - Morrissey writes introduction to Sparks book of lyrics

Sparks Prep Lyrics Book, Get Morrissey to Pen Introduction - Exclaim.ca
By Gregory Adams

Earlier this year, long-running pop outsiders Sparks issued their first-ever live LP, and now the brother duo have marked another milestone by prepping a lyrics book fittingly titled In the Words of Sparks...

The 200-page printed collection arrives August 31 through Tam Tam Books. In the Words of Sparks... was edited by Ron and Russell Mael, and a press release explains that they selected 75 songs for inclusion. While a full list of what's inside the book has not appeared, the press sheet hints that "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us," "Cool Places," "Never Turn Your Back on Mother Nature," and "No. 1 in Heaven" will appear in its pages.

In addition to the lyrics, an introduction has been written by longtime fan Morrissey, who included the band's "Arts & Crafts Spectacular" on his Under the Influence compilation in 2003 and was himself the subject of Sparks' "Lighten Up, Morrissey" single.

"In 1900 you held hands and felt like you'd scored /
In 1910 you'd never need a horse anymore /
In 1920 you could dance /
In 1930 lose your pants /
In 1940 you could go to war really soon /
In 1950 you could just be dull and a bore /
In 1960 set the world on fire /
That was then, this is now /
And nothing's blowin in the wind..."

Ron Mael is the coolest pop star ever.

At the Cannes film festival this year I was most surprised to see both members of Sparks walking down the street with an acquaintance. I later found out he's producing a film directed by them.
