    >> Laughing Oaf
    Me

Short pre-history: Oaf used "Pretty Woman" movie as an example of a wonders and benefits of American Consumerism... I objected... Argument started...

    > Geesh, I mention one scene in a movie to make a small point with, and you
    > feel the need to give me your review of the entire thing, which is
    > irrelevant. I don't care whether it's a good, or even a
    > "misogybistic", movie or not! It's beside the point.
    You mean misogynistic?
No, it's not! You chose yourself this particular movie among zillion others, so please, be ready to accept my SUBJECTIVE reaction to your choice...

    > But I'm glad to see you have other things on your mind, for once, besides
    > your sexuality. Lets see what that is......
Well, thanks, I'm not a one-track mind... indeed... It just happen to me to spend undue amount of time discussing Chris "coming out"...

    > As I said, I'll take our consumer culture over the altervatives I observe
    > elsewhere and in the past, as vulgar as our culture may appear at first.
What about countries like France or Germany, where social benefits are way better then America's and mandatory all-population-accesible medical coverage exists, unlike in the USA... What about Australia and New Zealand... where society is more humanistic and less consumer-oriented... What about country Sweden where level of crime 10 times less then USA's... There are alternatives... You are being so blind in your jingoism, you are not realizing that you sound like some kind of American version of Le Pen... (America is great, the rest of the world is shit... They, damn foreigners ought to look up to Yankees...) Too bad, your kind of knee-jerking jingoism became mainstream after Sept 11...

Did you ever asked yourself a question, why the Arab world masses support this crazy criminal scumbug Bin Laden... Is it because Arabs are naturally evil, or it is because America is treating Palestinians like human garbage and supporting such criminal regimes as Kuweit, Saudi Arabia and Israel with Sabra and Shatila war criminal Ariel Sharon at the top??? Why say Jews in Europe have human rights and Palestinians at occupied territories do not? (By the way I admire Jewish peoples for their historical socialist and left wing traditions, especially Karl Marx and Leo Trotski. Also Vladimir Lenin was half-Jewish by his mom... I just very skeptical about Israel's idea of European Jews living at Palestine, where frankly they don't belong... Why not to help Israeli Jews to return to Europe and to the Arab world, where they lived for thousands of years, instead of making them hostages to the imperialist plans of Ariel Sharon and Republicans Inc at the tiny piece of real estate called Palestine... Jews could do way much better elsewhere then in Palestine... Especially with their high percentage of PhDs and highly-qualified workers and craftsmen, not to mention artists and actors...) Just a question... Maybe Bin Laden crimes are much worse worse then anything wrong America did to the rest of the world... YET... What about Bush family criminal connections to Saudi Arabian oil-rich Islamic reactionary dynasty and Bush family criminal connection to Kenneth Lay, Enron ex-CEO. What about Dick Cheney highly questionable business practices... Sept 11 is not an excuse for me to let Republicans off so easily...

And, oops, what about American border patrols criminal mistreatment of Mexican so-called "illegal" immigrants. Border patrols have a license to shoot at Mexican workers, whose only crime is their desire to work hard and honest for the American economy for minimal below-poverty wages, and, of course, American economy desperately needs those workers... But how convenient is for American elites to keep those honest and needed workers "illegal" for the purpose of exploiting them... Why not to open USA/Mexican borders... if you are such a "market economy" superfreak...

    > Did you happen to read the NY TIMES MAGAZINE this past Sunday? An article

Of course, I support Iranian peoples desire to get rid of reactionary Islam and be free and secular... (Just a notice, at my book, all organized religions are evil and designed to scum ignorant peoples of their savings and keep them under control of elite classes) But what about old Reagan-era Iran-contras affair... USA selling arms to Iran and helping Nicaraguan contras... Oliver North, does this particular name ring your bell, mister Yankee Doodle?

The same Gorbachev who sold out his own country to the Russian mob and CIA? The same Gorbachev who licks collective American ass and enjoys San Francisco girlfriend after his wife Raisa died? I talked with about 10 Russians here at Sunset, Hollywood and about 80% of them think Gorbachev was a crook and CIA agent at first place... Communism was obsolete and yes, homophobic and sexist ideology, but modern Russia now is semi-feudal semi-capitalist mess, with workers starving and Russian intellectuals escaping to the West, cause Russian factories and scientific institutions are ruined by criminal Gorby, Chubais and Eltzin cliques of thieves and economic criminals... Russians are not dying from hunger now only because they are shamefully selling their oil and gas to the West by ridiculously low prices... They lost their dignity under capitalism... Apparently, Americanization of Russia brought happiness only to the selected few, about 3% of general populations... Those are former high-level Communists and Mafia types who got very rich selling out their country to the West and shipping those stolen monies to the Swiss banks... Do Russian Communists sold out completely... maybe not yet, cause there is some opposition to the current Russian regime (Zuganov and Zirinovski communist parties)... but they are themselves weak, stupid and discredited themselves by antisemitism and corruption...

So man, I could talk a little bit more then just "gay issues and sexuality" So don't be so proud, my geeky friend...

Jesus, 2 grammatical mistakes in 3 sentences:
    Right spelling is...
    1.) EMBARRASSING
    2.) ARGUMENT
3.) Third error is structural, ought to be:
"Stop now to keep yourselves from further embarrassment."

Now, I respect your opinion, Mister or Miss, but please take your High School Equivalence Diploma exams before putting down me AND OAF so harshly!!!

Yeah. The only thing agreeble about Robert Evans message is that Pretty Woman picture was indeed a sexist Hollywood crap... Perhaps mine and Oaf's movie tastes are a little bit different... (Smile)

Sure, there are alternatives to American way of life... Yet, American way of life encourages individuality and freedom, I wish Robert Evans would be a little more objective about USA... Robert Evans is suffering from freshman college year "blame it all on Uncle Sam" syndrome, which is shared by many follow leftists... Also Laughing Oaf is not a jingoist, and most of his points are very reasonable and level-headed... One has to look to his other postings and realize that they are a product of an intelligent mind...

Default the history of jello according to Suzanne

In youth: the slimey cold stuff that was one of the very few allowed edible foods allowed when i had a stomach virus. Already associated with high fever and vomiting.

The blob coming out of the movie theater airconditioning vent. Jello or Jelly? We'll never know, but it was a creepy movie image, not to be outranked by the scary clown doll in Poltergeist, but harrowing enough.

Always served in school and restaurant cafeterias. Who wants this stuff if there is a choice of pudding, cake, or pie? Its the poor man's dessert. There is no chocolate or layer of frosting within. You can't chew it and it doesn't have a flakey crust. There is something really wrong with it.

Then, lets go straigh to today. After years of comfortably not even remotely considering it as a possible dessert entree for years and years, i come to find out that its also made of gelatin. Which, if you don't know, gelatin is ground up cow hooves and bones, and is therefore.....completely contraditory to my vegeterian diet.

And even in a perfect world where i could imagine liking jello as something i would want to eat...I think even your combination of nemesis isn't that good because i believe Lyn wouldn't mind hunting and killing if it was within her interest, so marrieds are no good.

    > should it not be "before putting Oaf & I down so harshly"

Well that does sound like it would be correct, but it isn't. If you take Oaf out of it (which you must be able to do), it would then read "before putting I down so harshly", which is obviously not right; it would have to be "before putting me down". Therefore when you add Oaf, it is "before putting me and Oaf down so harshly".

    Have a nice day.

First of all, I haven't said countries such as these aren't nice places to live, or that there aren't areas where they have are examples to us.
(I'm not going to get into a health care debate, though, because I just don't know what health care system we should have.)

Second of all, if you wanna talk about happy places to live, or what leads to happiness in general, I guess that's totally subjective, but I'm willing to bet there's the most happiness in capitalist democracies of one form or another. Now, if I listen to those of you telling me materialism is so soul killer, well...if happiness is not connected to income, why worry about minimum wages and distributions to the poor? If you hate a society where everyone is in a race to get ahead, I guess you'd support policies that slow down consumption - high taxes, generous benefits, required long paid vacations, limits on working hours, etc. Which begins to sound like France, no? And France has twice the unemployment rate of America. Is that better? Happier? I don't know...personal preference I guess......

But these countries you name, they're all among the nice places to live in the world. And they're all - especially their youth - a part of the globalizing consumerism.

    >What about Australia and New
    > Zealand... where society is more humanistic and less consumer-oriented...

So move down there then. Koala bears sure are cute. Or stay here and live the way you wanna live. No one's stopping you!!!!! But in a democratic society you ought not try and shove your aesthetic and moral judgments down consumers' throats. They're freely choosing their lifestyles, thank you. LET FREEDOM RING BABY!! I'm sorry you hate everyone you live amongst so much, but hey, that's your problem. The youth of the world seem to be lining up for what you despise.

    > What about country Sweden where level of crime 10 times less then USA's...

Yeah, again like most people who argue with me on this board, you start throwing out a million different issues. You wanna talk about crime now?
    WTF.

But I happen to know a little about Sweden, since like half my extended family lives there. It's a beautiful place, indeed. But when my 16 year old Swedish cousin visited last summer, she was indistinguishable from a typical American teen (except thinner). She even badgered me to take her to various athletic shoe stores, that was her big obsession on the shopping front. (Something I found odd was how she saved all the shopping bags she got from stores; apparently she has a big collection...must be a girl thing.) However, since you're an American who just reads what other Americans write about Sweden, apparently you're not aware of all not being so well there on the economic front.

Here's an article from one of my favorite SWedish writers on econmics (he also wrote the excellent book IN DEFENCE OF GLOBAL CAPITALISM):

    SWEDE AND SOUR: http://www.techcentralstation.be/2051/wrapper.jsp?PID=2051-100&CID=2051-060702B

    > There are alternatives... You are being so blind in your jingoism, you are
    > not realizing that you sound like some kind of American version of Le
    > Pen...

I have zero politics in common with Le Pen. I'm the complete polar opposite to him across the board, and very proud of this fact, a fact I doubt you can claim for yourself.

It seems to me Le Pen's popularity was in part due to fears about the new century of globalization and European Union, where certain backwards thinking old world people wanna turn back the clock away from this century, to go back to a time when to be French meant you spoke French, ate French, bought French. Me? I'm clearly on the side of those in France who got their MBAs at Harvard, work for Airbus, and see globalization and freemarkets as providing wonderful opportunities.

So, nice try, but you're quite the fool.

Your very existance exemplifies my point. You're Exhibit Freaking A. Just because your PC politics force you to fashionably say one thing even though you do another, that's your issue with yourself. You create your lifestyle in the material world. It's a social decision more than a moral or economic one. You know what goods to buy and what goods not to buy. You have decided not to define yourself in terms of an SUV. Fine. Instead you want what your consumption comunity wants, as you've confessed. 99% of the things we buy we don't really "need," but we want them for what they are, as objects, *and* for the meanings that surround them. And, to me anyway, the material system of the consumerist world is fairer, less vulgar, more democratic. Because it's only about things, and you can buy things. In a culture where you DON'T need those THINGS that you consume, that would be because you have a religion, a family name, a skin color, an accent, a person you married that are doing what the consumption of goods we don't really "need" are doing today.

    > Man, not all peoples in entertainment business are crooks and

    > are...

Well, typical of a champagne liberal to look down on patriotism. I shouldn't like America? I choose to live here, and so do you. I'm just not looking down on my neighbors like an elitist snob, as you do. I share a country with them, and a country made up of all the people in the world, created by idealistic writings we're attempting to one day fully realize. If you hit the jackpot in Hollywood, I guess you can buy a big plot of land and not have to intermingle with the commoners you so despise, I don't really care.

Dude, did you see what Stone said about 9/11? He totally went off the deep end.
Right after it happened he was in a panel discussion and said it was a great revolt, and that the terrorists ought to link up with the Seattle anti-globalism protestors. So, that's the mentality of that guy - he had a boner over 3,000 murdered; he wanted to high-five Usama. (Although he was reportedly heavily on drugs that day.) Oh, he also reportedly treats people like crap in his personal and working life. But that aside, which has little to do with the merits of his movies, most of his movies are just dumb, intended for dumb people. And yeah, parnoid people. And lets not forget how he related so well to Richard Nixon, scummiest politician we've ever had. Talk Radio was goog, but you gotta credit that to Eric Bognosian. And Stone wrote the remake of Scarface, that's a good movie, but most credit there goes to Pacino and De Palma. And the cool aspects of Stone's own films are more a credit to his director of photography. He's a kook and a hack who got lucky, basically.

Spike Lee gets props for a good adaptation of Richard PRice's novel Clockers , and Do the Right Thing was thought provoking, that's about it. Malcolm X had its moments. Lee's a racist (while publicizing Jungle Fever he declared that only losers date outside their race), and he's also fucking annoying the way he tries to get other artists shunned over using the word "nigger" and so forth.
