I have a friend (literally) who is thinking about exploring the idea of being gay. I think she's actually battling being debilitatingly shy, but she has a crush on a girl now and has kind of asked some questions. The extent of my gayness is being an avid reader of Dykes to Watch Out For, but I offered to help. I said we could hang out at some gay bars in LA so she could get a feel for the scene. I wonder if anyone has any movie recommendations, but sweet ones for the beginner, not brutal hardcore lesbian movies. :p And not porn, but just movies that might give her an idea of the lesbian scene, to see if it feels right.

Thanks.

Your friend is really lucky to have someone so supportive as you in her life :flowers:

As far as movies, one that is very influential and so quirky and sweet is "Go fish". Although I'm a straight gal, I remember swooning over the adorable love story and really wanting a happy ending for the main characters. It is smart and well-written, looks cool visually, and is just all around awesome! :guitar:

Awesome, thank you. I'll Netflix it.

Well, big news yesterday was obama publicly supporting gay marraige. It was also nice to. See that people I served with in the military can finally serve openly. Not gay myself but a lot of gays and lesbians have been friends for a long time and it seems to be looking like a better world for everybody.

Totally agree! I'm so proud of President Obama for coming out in favor of love and equality.

Here's a clip from the historic ABC News Interview:

Rather convenient he saved that issue for his re-election campaign.

Yup, a better world for everybody because in the scheme of things a legal document ranks up there with homelessness, joblessness, hunger, genocide, and debt.

It's actually more about taking a stance on compassion instead of letting fellow politicians decide what is taboo to put on the table. Do you really think these things Lindsey? :(

I thought this was hilarious. For Englanders, the day before the good news that Obama supports gay marriage there was a setback in the fight for marriage equality when one of our (sort of backwards) states voted to ban gay marriage.

Politicians are politicians. It isn't a coincidence he said one thing before he was elected, kept mum on the issue for 3 years, and then suddenly vocally supports it 6 months before the election. Do you really not think these things Amie?

Obama has taken a massive gamble here. Why do you think he's been quiet on the subject for so long? The danger here is that he will alienate many of his supporters. I think it is an incredibly brave move. Mitt Romney (is Mitt a real name?) wasted no time in stating his position and I feel he thinks Obama has made a tactical error.

Supporting gay marriage is not a gamble if you're running as a Democrat.

It is a fact that the youth vote put Obama in office. He got people who had never voted before and were disinterested in politics interested for once. It is also a fact that after nearly four years, the same youth and the new youth who are now of voting age are not really that interested. There have been multiple polls supporting this in the last week alone on CNN, CBS, and FOX.

It is not a coincidence at all that 6 months before his chance at another 4 years in office he's doing more interviews, attempting comedy on Jimmy Fallon, and having his wife pop up on Jeopardy to read clues and plug their "community garden." Just like it wasn't a coincidence at all when he was trying to get elected that he appeared on Ellen, SNL, The Daily Show, WWE Raw and God knows where else.

This isn't any kind of anti-Obama attack. It is a fact. He's trying to appeal to certain demographics. Politics is politics and the reason he is showing up everywhere is because he, just like any other politician, wants your vote when the time comes. The reason he said he wasn't for gay marriage before he was elected, was quiet on it while in office, and now, months before it comes time for you to head to the polls, that he is for it is because he needed another big issue to run his re-election on.

(is Mitt a real name?)
Just as real as Barack. Or Peter for that matter.

So, you really believe support for Gay Marriage is a vote winner? I hope you're right. It wasn't in North Carolina and it certainly isn't here in the UK.

I think it is a vote winner for the youth, yes. It makes them excited again for the prospect of "change." Just look at how Facebook and Twitter has exploded over his statement. He caught their attention again right when he needed to.

North Carolina is usually a Red state so it is no surprise that they would vote conservatively on what is considered a "moral issue." Obama won North Carolina in 2008, though, and I'm sure he'll do it again. Even if he doesn't, most of the South takes up very little of the Electoral College when compared to Blue states like California and New York so he'll be fine.

By the way what is the story behind the GIF of Moz throwing breakfast cereal at the punk?

Well, political strategy aside, it is significant that there is a president in office taking a stance on an issue where empathy and compassion are key factors in understanding the matter at hand. Obama is effectlively saying "two souls regardless of the body they are packaged in should be able to be united as one." That requires one new to the issue to process the logic using empathy, something our droned-out nation seems to lack. It's not a far jump that empathetic issues on the table could have us looking more closely at what we have on our dinner plates or how we are impacting our natural resources. It is a positive step on many philosophical levels that he has recognized gay marriage equality.

Damn right!

Except for that time he ended DADT and that other time he said he would basically ignore DOMA.

It appears that Obama was backed into a corner after Joe Biden's remarks on Meet The Press.

Comments by Jay Carney were suitably obtuse and non-committal but questions were not going to go away. Obama was left no choice. Even still, this position is pretty weak. He maintains this is a personal decision and laws regarding same sex marriage should still be left under the jurisdiction of individual states.

He's hardly flying the rainbow flag at the White House. He's done just enough to answer the question, placate liberals and not change the status quo in the slightest.

I see no reason to start applauding him frantically. I think you could argue he would have never have mentioned the topic if it weren't for bigmouth Biden.
