The London Olympics Thread

£27 million of public money squandered in the space of just a few hours. What a f***ing waste.

Watching the opening ceremony right now, Iain Sinclair is absolutely right who was on Channel 4 News last night.

I admire the efforts of all the people involved, however, it is a mass hallucination done by William Barrows and Charles Saatchi as Sinclair described.

You know the little music/Internet/love story bit? I got lost when they'd cut to footage of people in a house. An old white man and black sisters or whatever. :squiffy: It got lost. I think even our American commentators narrating didn't know what the hell was going on. Loved the moulten metal and the Mary Poppins part. :o

We're finally just seeing the Olympians. It's a long ceremony. Shit.

One of our beloved American newsmen said of the London mayor "You'd think he was so busy he didn't have time for a haircut, but that's just his haircut." I Lol'd. :D

The way Pravda, sorry the BBC, is banging on about last night one would imagine we witnessed an event up there with man landing on the moon.
I wish I'd have f***ed off out the country tbh. But I did that for The Jubilee. And I've got tickets for the Boxing Finals
Fortunately I went to a pub last night, with no tv, so missed most of Danny "purveyor of poverty porn's" Boyle's wank-fest extravaganza.

OMG do any of you guys live where the men's road race is happening? Soooooooo beautiful. Where's the Running Horse Pub or Box Hill? I'm having a beer there some day dammit.

The mixed race family was of course just another way to show support for diversity to match the olympic ideals and to highlight what the UK is like these days. London now has the record of hosting the most olympics (3) and this is the first ever olympics where every country participating have at least one female representing their country.

On a personal level I feel less and less interested when the olympics come around and I think most people will remember the olympics when you were a kid or teen more. All the doping has ruined the fun and it is clear to see that countries and leaders that are no way near the olympic ideals use the olympics to make themselves look better. How on earth a country like the North Korea can be allowed to take part is completely beyond me.

Even your city streets are all curvy and beautiful like a woman. Our city streets are square, boring right angles. :squiffy:
Go Kaz!

I would imagine little cost for what the events brought in revenue and taxes. But thn again I believe what the television tells me

Try telling that to the people who paid into the welfare state and who are now being told that their taxes are being used to finance a big party for wealthy people in London while the rest of us face long-term unemployment and the withdrawal of necessary public services.

just read how much these games are costing the British people
you guys better win a lot of medals :p
oh yeah and one other thing, watching all those explosions during the opening ceremony made me think of the Blitz a little
I mentioned that to my (British) mum, I mean mom, and she said she was thinking the same thing when all those fireworks went off

Look how gorgeous Paraguay's outfits were!

I watched the BBC broadcast version and it wasn't explained any better. It was odd, for sure. At least the music was cool.

I too loved the industrial revolution and Mary Poppins parts. I wrote a journal entry about the ceremony as I watched it. You might get a kick out of it. Also I posted some cool screenshots and a link to a bunch more.

Haha.

Wow, you are good at noticing details. Didn't see that myself.

After reading your lovely review I got to thinking about the ceremony. I thought the way they did the torch was very clever. I'm pretty sure EVERYBODY said "What the hell are those cornucopia things the kids in front of the countries are carrying?" US announcers didn't say. Then it made sense and they all came together. Very well done and an excellent treatment for an eternal flame. Random pieces that make sense eventually.

I guess if you were at the stadium, you wouldn't be able to see all that, we as television viewers, were able to witness. The editing of the live performances along with the films is what turned it into a cohesive and engaging story. I think it will be even more appreciated over time. I'm certain the DVD will be available for purchase soon.
