Thread: Name this Smiths sampling tune

Default Name this Smiths sampling tune

There is a fairly popular song (in the U.S. at least) that used a sample of the guitar swell from the beginning of 'Unhappy Birthday' all throughout it.

It was not credited to Johnny Marr in any way and I don't think he was ever paid for the use.

He may not even be aware that it was done.

Is anyone else familiar with this song?

How would I give him this information?

Are you absolutely sure it's a sample? It's really not that difficult to create that sound.

That's a good point, mcrickson. I did A/B the two and they are absolutely identical in every way including length, key, and tone.

This song is by a band that was in the "alternative" genre in the mid 90's whose members were fans of the Smiths.

This song charted very high on the rock charts and sold a lot of copies so there is definitely money owed to Marr.

I am curious to see if anyone else remembers this song without me saying the artist or title.

    I don't think anybody can.

If Marr is owed money for that, then Marr owes money to Pomus/Shuman and Bolan for the blatant rip-offs of "Marie's The Name Of His Latest Flame" & "Metal Guru".

First of all, and I can't resist this one, the correct spelling is "you're" as in "you are obvi posting for him"...not "your." Is that petty, honey? Well, I enjoy literacy.

Secondly, as far as your obsession with shoving something into someone else's mouth...I mean, as this is outside of the Pigsty I won't go into detail, but yeah, I'm sure you have no room to talk, dude.

Lastly, as for the "banned user" thing...I mean, isn't it kind of ironic that you would bring that up, being one yourself? Hypocrite much, sweetie?

Yawn. God forbid a couple share the same ideas.

But let's talk about you "Valerie Gina". Can you explain to me why the person you're claiming to be is really a picture of an amateur porn actress named "Michelle" that has been taken from their website entitled michellesbedroom.com?

OF course. I wasn't always married to hubby. Any more questions or did you find out everything you wanted to know while you were stalking me? Bitch.

Everything I would ever need to know about you, I could learn by looking in the toilet bowl of a gas station restroom.

So, let me understand...by claiming that NHNS got this info by "stalking" you, you are implying that it is not true simply by virtue of how it was obtained? Great logic. No bullshit there, or anything!

Yeah, that post took about three seconds of my life away. Wow.

Anyway why would I give a shit about being sexy for some guy that poses as a chick on a Morrissey forum?

Actually, in Marr's case it is legally considered homage so he owes nothing to no one. I am talking about a direct sample that was uncredited and unauthorized and the band got away with it. I simply find it interesting that no one around such a knowledgeable place like this seems to have noticed. And I mean that sincerely.

Tell that to Queen. Maybe they can give Vanilla Ice some of his money back. Lord knows he needs it.

Maybe no one else likes this band? You're taking into account that more than one person on this forum has heard the song you're speaking of. And you shouldn't be. At least give the band if you want a serious discussion about this.

Give it a break you lot, someone was asking a genuine question and it's turned into a bitchfight.

I too remember hearing a song sometime in the 90's and everytime it came on I swore that it had the Unhappy Birthday sound in it, but I think it might have been pre-internet, or at least pre-me-having-good-access-to-the-internet, so there was no option of hearing it on the car radio and then coming home and googling it, like I would today.
