Default Johnny Marr's statement about the Smiths rumour

Posted on Johnny Marr's Twitter, a link to his Facebook update:

The rumour of the Smiths reunion is untrue. It's not happening.

    UPDATE 10:50 AM PT:

The rumor may have started with this article, link posted by @GianniSantor0 on Twitter.

The Smiths to reform - Music-News.com
    added: 26 Apr 2012 // by: Music-News.com Newsdesk

Music-News.com has learnt that one of the greatest bands the world has ever known are to reform.

The Smiths, widely regarded as THE seminal British band, are to throw their differences aside and return to the live stage this autumn.

The legendary songwriting partnership comprising of musical luminaries Morrissey and Marr are set to make a return after finding common ground.

It will be the first time that Manchester's independent monoliths, who were signed to London's Rough Trade label, have graced a stage since their acrimonious split in 1987.

Legal wranglings in the band saw other members, Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums), sue with varying degrees of success.

This announcement comes after a source revealed that the 80s icons had been in talks to perform with a well-known promoter.

The decision was said to have been made after fellow Mancunians, The Stone Roses, gave in and reformed.

The Smiths had previously turned down a lucrative offer of over 76 million pounds to tour the US.

Update: Since we published this article earlier today, denial of this reformation has been rife.

Hasn't there been at least one Smiths "reunion rumour" per week for the last 2 decades? Why is he giving it attention?

Is there a thread already about the Twitter frenzy earlier? 'The Smiths' is still trending, I believe.

I dearly wish Morrissey and Marr would do some gigs together. No one expects it to be the same as the Smiths in the 1980s. I think we all understand that. It would be a different animal, but still fantastic.

this is most likely a publicity stunt to make it seem like this manchester gig is the last solo one for a while/ever

Just driving home and heard the words on the radio " the smiths to reform" , I can not tell you the feeling that went through me. The microsecond elation only for the dj to announce , however it has been denied by Morrissey and JM. I then went to utter sadness.

I'm telling you if the four of them got back together , they would bring the roof off. There wouldn't be a stadium big enough.....

Not that it's a guide of any sorts but let's see how the roses get on in june....

Cmon moz , johnny , Andy and mike.......just do it.

Where did the new "rumour" even start? Was it because of Marr's Pitchfork interview?

It wouldn't surprise me if there is something vaguely true about this. Not a full blown Smiths reunion but something like Morrissey and Marr working together, or maybe Marr appearing with Morrissey in Manchester even.

As has been said already, there are always rumours about the Smiths reforming and generally they are totally ignored by both parties. Not this time.

I did laugh earlier when I read that Joyce had dismissed the rumour as untrue. Like anyone would tell him!!

Doubt this will stoke any fires, but... earlier, someone on Twitter asked Johnny, "Greatest lyricist still alive?" and he replied, "Erm....". . Think we all know the answer to that one.

"The rumour of the Smiths reunion is untrue. It's not happening" - doesn't rule out Morrissey/Marr, of course.

It's like banging your head against a brickwall when you hear "Smiths" and "reform".

This makes me curious as to what motivated the original "news source" to publish this so authoritatively- just trying to generate some headlines?

I do hold out hope that if we all come back here in 10-15 years time, some degree of collaboration might have happened with Morrissey and Marr, but I'm not holding my breathe for that either. *sigh*

    I know. I can't either.

But I do admit that I occasionally get curious about what the future will hold for Morrissey.
