Default Will someone please aid me in escaping this foul, ridiculous and loathesome country?

    I've had it!

I can no longer take it here. Everyday these confederate flag wearing ( while their 4x4's have a,"united we stand" sticker on the bumper; reach a new low in human ignorance, intolerance and ridiculum. I almost feel as if life truly has no meaning anymore. Every time I hear these rich, white and morally devoid fuckheads preach about how we should go to war with Iraq, I want to explode. My friends in Germany are scared that I soon will not be able to leave before this intellectually bereft hellhole closes me in forever.

The world is truly headed towards disaster and the government of this country is driving us, heavily intoxicated. I am going to say something right now that I said in October; if we go to war with Iraq...I will denounce my citizenship. So if anyone would like to move to the United States and you just think that I am unstable or a fruitloop, please let us switch addresses o.k.?

You can live here...in the land of the free(snicker)and the home of the brave (where we fire bombs at innocent civilians from miles away).

Fen, whilst I can agree with your sentiments, unfortunately the grass isn't always greener on the other side. One solution is to try & change your own patch (I know it seems impossible) but to keep chipping away at the system bit by bit, it's been done in the past & people power is a mighty force when we do get organised.

You're not a fruitloop, you are a forward thinker, just don't give up. Argue back against the death & distruction our governments are doing, if it wasn't for their system of those who have compared to those who have not then we wouldn't have terrorism.

Default If that's how you feel...

    ...why haven't you left already?

You have every reason to leave, after all. I can't believe that a true humanitarian like you, as acutely sensitive as you are to the terrifying numbers of people the U.S. has slaughtered over the years, would really need a few more Iraqi bodybags to push you over the edge.

Are you really going to quantify your morality like that? Millions have already died-- do you have a specific number of corpses you need to exceed? A quota of death? Haven't enough innocents already died to convince you to renounce your citizenship?

Of course it's enough. You have all the evidence you need. The U.S. is guilty as charged.

What *you* are guilty of is cowardice. From the tone of your post it's obvious you are probably good at little besides throwing blustery, ineffectual tantrums. The U.S. will invade Iraq and then you'll say "Well, if they invade *one more* country, I'm outta here..."

I don't mind foreign America-bashers on this board-- hey, it's all the rage these days-- but for Americans to moan things like "I'm renouncing my citizenship if..." is absurd. The writing is on the wall, and it has been for some time. You can't really call out our government for being cowardly when you yourself can't up and leave a free country to pursue life in other, more peaceful, more enlightened regimes...

Or could it be that you stay because there are many benefits to living in the United States? Maybe so, but I understand why you won't acknowledge them-- to do that, after all, might take away the giddy self-satisfaction you get from your shrill diatribes against the rednecks who kicked sand in your face.

Maybe you should move to San Francisco-- they hate America there, too.

There would be terrorists and terrorism regardless of America's foreign policy. Humans have always had wars. Take away one reason, they find another ! In the end, its about taking sides, unfortunately. I personally love The UK and I am not ashamed of her past. Every nation has done horrble things, but both the UK and the USA have excelled in good things and human achievement. I would do some travelling before you decide on the merits of other countries.

You are not alone. This country makes me sick too. I often fantasize about moving up to Toronto. I've gone as far as obtaining the paperwork from Canadian immigration services to become a legal citizen (when Bush was sworn into office-that was the last straw). It's almost impossible for an American to become a Canadian citizen. I don't have a guaranteed job offer in Canada nor 20,000.00 cash-in-hand (they don't want anymore homeless) so i'm screwed, not allowed in. If this country was as strict with its immigration requirements, perhaps we wouldn't be in such a mess!

America accepts freely the immigrants of the world....who accepts Americans?

So now you're blaming the immigrants for America's woes?!?

We're either war-mongering dictators or open-armed peaceniks. Pick a reason that "America Sucks!" and stick with it, please.

    Oh, and Canada's history isn't squeaky-clean, either.

I'm not blaming immigrants, but I am questioning America's loose immigration policies. ANY one can get into this country, does that make you feel safe? How does it feel to know that an arab can come here and open a convenient store TAX FREE for a year? When do we get to skip a year paying taxes?

    > We're either war-mongering dictators or open-armed peaceniks. Pick a

But there are so many reasons, do I have to pick just one? Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good things about this country, but come on, be realistic.

    > Oh, and Canada's history isn't squeaky-clean, either.

No kidding, but unlike the US, Canada at least tries to improve its weaknesses. They've banned hand-guns (like that'll ever happen here), healthcare is for EVERYone, and they respect and embrace their ethnic diversity (again, like that'll ever happen here).

What are you saying, then? That we shouldn't allow Arabs, or we just shouldn't allow them to own anything?

    > But there are so many reasons, do I have to pick just one? Don't get me

I think you're the one who's not being realistic: no country is perfect...but America, for all its political faults, is a pretty livable place, wouldn't you say? There aren't any bombs going off in YOUR college cafeteria, are there? I mean, some places are a living HELL. You can get fresh water whenever you'd like; your chances of contracting the ebola virus are slim and you don't have to go to bed each night, fearing if you'll be awakened and dragged off at gunpoint by your government for no apparent reason.

    Just put things into perspective.

There are pros and cons to all three of those very debatable issues.

Look, it's possible to love one's country without necessarily agreeing with its politicians.

I'm saying that they (any new arrival) shouldn't be tax exempt for a year to "get on their feet", unless we all get to share in a real break from taxation.

Not in college, but thank god I dodged all the bullets and pipe bombs at my high school.

West Nile Virus and Lyme disease, gotta love the great outdoors. As far as being dragged off at gunpoint, ever live in Cobb County Georgia? (You know the place...they banned the '96 Olympics from that particular region). You CAN (and there have been cases of this happening) be raided and dragged off to jail JUST for being gay. They have a law on the books forbidding 2 people of the same sex sharing a bed. I guess going to bed praying the neighbors aren't homophobes and worrying about them calling the cops is good peace of mind?

    > Just put things into perspective.

    Always.

There are pros and cons to everything.

    > Look, it's possible to love one's country without necessarily agreeing

I never said I didn't love this country, I was born and raised here and appreciate all the comforts it has to offer. I'm just not into turning a blind eye and pretending that it's the greatest place on earth. There's plenty of tragedy and injustice for all here too, don't ignore it. Unfortunately no place can live up to perfect utopia.

Truly, Los Angeles is a modern day Babylon Tower... at LA there are.. Koreantown, Tokio City at downtown LA, there are Indians and Arabs at Venice Blvd, there are Armenians at Glendale and Latinos from all over Latin America at East LA and everywhere else, there are Iranians at Pico Blvd, there are Latinos from Honduras and Salvador and from everywhere else at Downtown, there are Arabs and Vietnamese and Israeli enclaves at Hollywood, and so on and so forth... That's why I LOVE LA...

Hey, let's not be Arab-haters here.. What if this acme Arab was an political opponent of some reactionary Arab regime like Iraq or Saudis? What if he is a political refugee? What if he has mother or brother at US and wants to reunite... Arabs are as human as you are.

Yes, they are a plenty of good things about USA... Like you could critisize it and no one has a right to shut you up... There are a lot of rotten things too, but why are you trying to escape the problems and American wrongs instead of facing them face-up head-on... and trying to change things for the better?

Heh, Canada? I always thought about Canada as USA Junior... LOL OK, to be fair, I like Canadian medical system much better then American medical mess, but otherwise Canada is pretty damn similar to USA... Example: USA Blacks have historical grudges against US Whites.. In Canada, French-Canadians have historical grudges against Anglo-speaking WASPs... (Quebec separatism)... So, no Canada is not free from nationalistic strife... BTW, Canada has a very hi-tech active armament industry, they produce huge quantities of weaponry and selling them to the Third World... So no, Canadians are NO ANGELS either...

Overall, your desire to leave USA is not only immature but also cowardly... Ought to fight American injustices if any, not to escape to Canada...

He is kind of guy who eats low-fat meatballs and spaghetti at some trendy Italian trattoria among other happy shiny middle class peoples, while discussing Noam Chomski and Third World hunger with his similarly well-fed well-groomed college buddies...

Oops, sorry, didn't mean it that way. Generalizing, how old school of me. Blame it on too many 'All In The Family' reruns, gimme a break, huh.
There's an Arab minimart owner down the block from me. His first month here he spent alot of time making sure every customer knew he was tax exempt. lol, sort of cracked me up but after a while I wondered when I could skip a year paying taxes. Jealousy, bad. Justice, good?

Picketing, parades and rallies are useless, really. This country is too divided and disorganized to come together to face our problems head on. Everyone has their 'own thing' going, no one has the time to organize, at least not en masse. It's a beautiful dream, but I'm afraid reality is simply another story.

    > Heh, Canada? I always thought about Canada as USA Junior...

LOL, me too, until I really got to know it. I live very close to the border and have been to Toronto many times, London, Windsor, all over Ontario as far north as Sudbury. If you ever drive up to Sudbury, do it during the day. The lunar landscape is a m a z i n g (especially with Bjork's 'Verspertine' playing). I love Toronto. Everytime I go there I feel at home. No US city has ever done that to me, other than perhaps Phoenix.

Montreal, and particularly Quebec are HORRIBLE places for English speakers, especially if you are American. Even if you speak French, they dispise you for your accent. If I didn't know better I'd say the word 'rude' originated in that region. LOL, no place is perfect, really. But I have to hand it to Canada...they REALLY try to embrace their diversity and celebrate it, much more-so than you'll ever see in the states I'm afraid.

There are no true angels, period. Everyone has a secret story lurking.

Fighting is for cowards. Grown men know love and work things out. Is my wanting to leave immature, or am I seeking a deeper magic?
