    Default I keep Mine Hidden?

I read on another forum that someone claimed 'I Keep Mine Hidden' on 'Complete' is a different remixed version. This isn't true is it?

    No, this is not true.
It's the same recording, it just sounds cleaner because of the remastering.

I hate posting on this place, but please check the version physically pressed on the reverse of the 'Sweet and Tender Hooligan' 7" in the deluxe 'Complete' boxset.
Mine is a different mix - the easiest way to notice - immediately after Morrissey sings 'It's so easy for you' a loud guitar line enters right at the front of the mix.
I have just checked the version from both the original 'Sweet and Tender Hooligan' CD from 1995 AND the MP3 download version you get with the Rhino 'Complete' boxset, and this guitar line is completely absent on both.
So bizarrely, the MP3 version that Rhino is touting DOES NOT MATCH UP with what is actually on the physical version.
The only place I have heard this guitar line is on the 7" in the Complete box set. Is it a general fuck up, or have I got some supremely rare mispress? Dunno. But no amount of 'remastering' can add a guitar line to a track - it's either a new remix, or an earlier mix/different mix that has been put out by mistake.
If someone else could check their own boxset I'd appreciate it.
I've been wondering why no-one else has been raving about this - it's practically the only 'new' thing in the set.

    Ok, that is very plausible.
I posted after comparing the version on the Sweet and Tender Hooligan cd to the Rhino mp3 download, those 2 are identical.
I am unable to play vinyl at the moment so cannot check.
Would you be able to convert it to mp3 and upload somewhere?

    Cheers,

    I.R.

I actually just tried and failed, which sounds like a terrible tease, but it really isn't. Loads of recording gear on my computer, but no matching leads to connect my hi-fi output up to my PC - tried it through the 'Headphone Out' and it sounded like a ghost farting. Someone else must have the deluxe version and a way of recording it.
I actually got the Rhino MP3 download as I didn't want to wear my vinyl out, so I'm anxious for someone to do a quality recording as well.
It's not JUST the added guitar line - there's a lot of differences in the mix to my ears - rhythm guitars in the verse pulled back, feedback guitar pushed up, there's a stereo pan on the cymbal spashes just before the chorus which doesn't appear to be on the MP3 version - but people have been doubting me for so long I've been starting to question my sanity.

No, no, I'm sure you are right.
I know for a fact that the vinyl version of Reel Around The Fountain is the Peel Session and the official mp3 download is the Troy Tate version.

Actually the vinyl and MP3 versions of 'Reel' do match up - they both have that ghostly guitar line before the drums start.
This was actually the only other track I downloaded on MP3, because as far as I can hear these are the only two songs on the entire box set that have never been officially released before - the alternate mix of 'I Keep Mine Hidden' and the Troy Tate version of 'Reel Around the Fountain'. I'm not sure why the booklet suggests it's the Peel session version, but the actual 7" vinyl is the Troy Tate as well.

Interesting indeed, given that the A side label on the 7" credits the BBC!
(presumably because it is a recording of a Peel session broadcast by the BBC)

Someone in the archives has obviously got their mix tapes mixed up. Which is nice for us.

I remember that when 'The Sound of the Smiths' was first announced by Rhino (as 'Hang the DJ: The Very Best of the Smiths'), 'I Keep Mine Hidden' was included in the tracklisting. It was later nixed from the final release - presumably by Johnny Marr, as Morrissey has always claimed to love the track (and was even playing it on tour at the time). I wonder if the remix that has slipped out on the new 7" was one that was previously prepared for this compilation?

    Quite likely.
I'm dying to hear it by the way.
Please find a way to upload it, pleeease!

    No way!

Sonically the whole thing seems a lot fuller than the original version (or, indeed the remastered MP3 Rhino version), so I'm presuming it's a relatively new mix, rather than some long lost alternate dating from the same time as the original. I love the song, but the recording has always sounded flat as a pancake to me - this version doesn't, and to my ears at least is a marked improvement on the original.

Sadly it's not 4:40 long though!

It's definitely a different mix. Another giveaway is the feedback at the end - goes on for a couple of seconds longer on the new 45.

I don't see this track on the Complete tracklisting... do you mean on the Complete Singles box??

Nope - it's only available on the deluxe version of the new 'Complete' Smiths boxset - ie the one that comes with the all the vinyl LPs and 7" singles as well as the CDs. It's not available as part of the official MP3 downloads that came with the set either, which points to it being a fuck up somewhere along the line - the only place you'll hear this version (until someone manages to record and share it) it is on the reverse of the 'Sweet and Tender Hooligan' 7" included in the box set.

The only fuck up is the mp3 downloads, they have just been poorly put together and a lot of the files are not even the new remastered versions! It's quite clear that they have not used the proper 7" remasters for the downloads, even some of the filenames state "the sound of the smiths" etc. Plus some files are only 192kbps, including I keep mine hidden!

This "new" I keep mine hidden was most likely supposed to be one of the downloads but they've been lazy and just used any version they could find to put the downloads together quickly. The download is just the exact version that was previously available on CD! and by that I mean it doesn't sound remastered at all.
