Lack of Action on Offensive Posts

Re: There is too much homophobia on this site

Hi Iona Mink, Maybe it's a Brit thing. Are you based in the States? All I know is if I used the word with my females friends I'd be well told off.

No, I am a Brit. I think if anything is it becoming more of the lexicon here than in the states where puritanical outrage remains over the word. And you do hear it on the telly here.

You may like to read this. It may be food for thought for your female friends.

And as a giggle (this was shown on BBC Two),

Hi Iona Mink, Hilarious clip. Is this from The Trip? I missed it but was told it was brilliant.
Also, interesting article. Please forgive me if you find all this stuff too much unreconstructed 80's socialism, but she was speaking from a female point of view. I think when a man uses the word the meaning is much more loaded. Kind of like black people using 'Ni****r' . Also, may I be a little defensive and say that my argument is not based on puritanical outrage, it's an attempt to look at language and understand it's power.

It was from The Trip. I highly recommend it.

Yes I see what you are saying but you were asking for a female point of view. I've given you my view and now Penny Red's. If you are interested in more women's views, you might like to Google Eve Ensler and Germaine Greer.

I wasn't accusing you of puritanical outrage but saying that is an apt description for Americans since their history is founded on that.

I would still like to know why you think c*** is such an offensive term (without referring to the reactions of others)? Personally I find words such as slapper, slag or slut way more offensive because it implies a social contract that women have to adapt to when handling their sexuality. What is it about the word c*** that your female friends object to? Do they even know? Or is it because they are told that c*** is a 'bad' word because society deems it so? It's fascinating, especially when c*** has only been seen as taboo for the last 100 years or so.

Thank you for your reply Iona Mink. I don't have a ready reply to your question about why it is offensive, although for what it's worth this what instinctivley occurs to me:
It is received knowledge, ie, the reaction to the word, in my experience has been one of offence (as the writer of the New Statesman article experienced) and the context I've seen used in has been one of hatred and violence to women.
Being a bloke, it's not for me to tell women what to be offended by and I think this would be a more interesting discussion if more females got involved.
But I do not think we are that far apart, re, your sentance "Personally I find words such as slapper, slag or slut way more offensive because it implies a social contract that women have to adapt to when handling their sexuality." This sounds like home ground for me.

I should say just to be clear that I don't think it is a word that should be used freely (ie, you shouldn't call your kids in with that word) but I don't think it deserves the title of 'most offensive' swear word.

Maybe I should explain why I don't have a visceral reaction to it. I think if you accept it is an offensive, misogynist, sexist word towards women and use it as such what you are saying is that to to be the owner of a c***, ie to be female, is something to be ashamed of and that to be a woman is the worst possible predicament to find yourself in (which reminds me of orthodox Jewish men who wake every morning and thank God they were not born a woman). I refuse to perpetuate that understanding. By you saying that c*** is an offensive and sexist term, to me, you are saying to be female is offensive. If you can't (or rather shouldn't) call a woman a c***, it's like inferring women are supposed to deny their womanhood by claiming that it is not part of them as it is such a heinous thing to possess.

However, if you divorce the denotation from the word, it's a completely different story. It stops being something strictly referring to women and with that said, jesus, it is a great word to say. It sounds aggressive and as Penny Red said, it is difficult to say without bearing one's teeth.

Thank you Iona Mink. Great post. I take on board all that you say and will consider it. Thank you for a good exchange. So often on this forum, posters descend to insults and its difficult to have a descent discussion..

Re: There is too much homophobia on this site

Hey Deathdisco, no need to get so uppity about it. Look, you're right it is just a word but language is very powerful, and from my perspective, this word contains a lot of hate. It's not for me to tell women to be offended or threatened but in the context that I grew up in, it is a horrible sexist word and my avoidance of the word is out of respect of the wishes of those around me. You certainly will not hear it on telly or the radio (in the UK atleast).

You can hear people say c*** all the time on the TV and radio. Someone has already posted links to the examples I was thinking of.

Yeah, it appears it has been on telly but not on the radio (or atleast when I've been around). Nevertheless, it's a word that carries a lot of baggage. This is the case whether you agree with me or not.

Thank you!

Well, it is a discussion board isn't it? It seems on most boards, people are loathed to actually discuss things. Nice exchange with you too.

Re: There is too much homophobia on this site

I don't think I've ever said any womans parts on this forum....I still don't think swearing on every post is cool though, although I used to do it all the time, which I now regret!
I do believe it is a bit common to swear in every sentence you speak or write...it just isn't needed. And that's why I'm not a punk! or a chav! :D

What's the story on this? I mean how does this game work? Or is it a spoof? Clearly whoever lined up the letters on the production end took a guess that they'd choose consenant/vowel/consenant and so forth and arranged that word to be spelled. And are those priests? This clip intrigued me this morning.

Oh wait. Now that I look at it not on my tiny phone but a ginormous screen I see that it's doctored. Nevermind. :p

This morning I was thinking "WTH??? British people are sooooooooooo weird!!!!!!!!"
