The Cure’s Porl Thompson is 53 today; watch ‘Edge of the Deep Green Sea’

Today’s the birthday — he’s 53 — of guitarist Porl Thompson, the three-time member of The Cure who is second only to bassist Simon Gallup in tenure and importance to helping craft the sonic vision of one-time brother-in-law Robert Smith. Thompson, who’s been back in the fold since 2005, was an original member of The Cure in 1976, but was dropped before Three Imaginary Boys was recorded — only to return for the band’s peak years, from 1983 to 1993. To mark the occasion, we present what’s arguably Thompson’s signature guitar solo, the freak-out at the end of Wish standout and concert favorite “From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea,” shown here in the version included on the 1993 concert film “Show” (which has yet to be released on DVD). The video’s a bit pixelated, but the sound’s great. And if you just can’t wait, Thompson starts ripping into his solo at around 5:45.
