Thread: Anyone else rate Mozzer over The Smiths?

Default Anyone else rate Mozzer over The Smiths?

As much as i love The Smiths, for me Morrissey as a solo artist towers above - both lyrically & with the music his band have produced for him.

Boz Boorer is every bit a match for Johhny Marr & Morrisseys best solo work easily outstrips The Smiths best.

    Anyone agree?

I think Boz is an underrated genius & this has been proven by the length of time Morrissey has kept him in the gang.

He's done nearly 20 years with Moz - 4 times longer than Marr, almost.

    4 times longer = 4 times better.

...I'd like to see them both work their way through an All You Can Eat chinese buffet and then I'll be able to give an opinion.

    But seriously:
Undisputed fact: one Mr Boorer is worth two Mr Marr.

    ...Weightwise.

(How many minutes does Martin need to finish Christine Cowshed's chips? I reckon 2 and a half.)(I can easily beat that but I can't play the guitar at the same time)

I find these unneccesary refreneces to Mr Boorers weight insulting.

I expected better from a Morrissey forum.

I don't prefer either really, and I'm not an expert on the technical side of music so I can't really comment on Morrissey's various collaborators/songwriters. However, I do listen to Morrissey solo a lot more than I do The Smiths. Although I adore The Smiths, I enjoy and find interesting listening to the range of styles (musical, lyrical and thematic) in the solo work, and because of the sheer volume of his catalogue there's always a forgotten tune or something unheard to seek out.

    Def. NOT!!

I adore Mozza and constantly defend his corner, but my heart belongs to The Smiths. Personally, I don't think Morrissey has had another songwriting partner anywhere as talented as Marr.

    I agree with you.

Morrissey/Marr wrote some really great songs, but Morrissey's solo career is outstanding and since (naturally) through the years he has grown artistically, his solo work is a bit better. Boz is brilliant and I think he is just as good as Marr.

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE THE SMITHS, but I hold Morrissey's solo music a little closer to my heart.

The Smiths music and albums have a much larger place in history than Moz's solo work.
Plus just listen to a crowds reaction eact time he plays a Smiths song live.

I, personally, look at it like this

The Smiths are The Smiths and Moz is Moz, 2 different entities.

Without a doubt! I first listened to Morrissey the solo artist. Had never listened to the Smiths. Morrissey led me to the Smiths just because I needed more Moz. I love their work, don't get me wrong, but Morrissey's solo work is so much better lyrically and musically.

Whilst your entitled to your opinions you're quite obviously wrong.

Musically better? How? Please, I'm dying to know.

The Smiths music hold childhood/teenage memories and i think you always stay passionate about music heard and appreciated as a youth.... so for that reason, The Smiths will always be my fav band... but i've got to admit that tunewise, Moz has penned far greater tunes post Smiths... The Loop, Ganglord, NSAM (video), MOTG,.......). For me - it's a draw!

Boz's guitar has a little pie oven in the back of it if you look close enough. He's the only guitarist to have them custom made by Ginsters.

    Ok, enough of the jokes.

I've said it before but there can be no doubt that Marr is the superior musician but oftentimes I don't want superior musicianship, I want music to tap my feet to & to help me forget about the troubles of the day. And Moz solo provides that in spades.

The Smiths & Morrissey's lyrics for the Smiths, tend you remind you of your troubles as opposed to the opposite!
