Default Lip Stains anyone? Girls? Emo boys?

So I don't wear a lot of makeup because I'm kinda a tomboy and touch my face a lot without knowing it and it rubs off. Many years ago my friend introduced me to Benetint which I love, I think it's made from crushed rose petals and you can use it on your cheeks as well. It lasts a couple of hours which is a lot longer than any lipstick would. When I apply it around my dad he freaks out everytime thinking that I'm putting nail polish on my lips.

So the other day I was at Target and they had this covergirl product on sale that is also a lip stain called Outlast. SO I bought it and tried it and while I love the results because it lasts three times as long, I wonder about animal testing, it's sweetened which is odd, and it basically feels like I'm applying magic marker to my lips.

    Any thoughts on this anyone?

Sephora, it's a black and white fancy make-up store here. THey also have installations in JC Penney's and maybe even Macys if I recall, but I've only ever bought it at the Sephora store. Benetint also makes a pinker version made from poppys. Hey Antique Rose Girl, you'd love Benetint, it even tastes like roses...bitter. JJ should be taking Valentines Day Gift notes.

Benetint is a godsend. I've never used those other ones, but I really should seek out a cheaper substitute. Benefit make-up is €€€€€.
Thank you for curing me of my ridiculous obsession with love.

I can never find the right color. Like, the color your lips are when you've been making out for a few hours.

It might have high levels of lead in it, but checking the label probably wouldn't be too informative, as they tend to not report it.

    lead in lipstick

Does Benetint dry out your lips? The other long-lasting lipsticks do.

I have henna lipstain but so far have been afraid to use it. I'm afraid I'll get a smeary Bob Smith sort of look, which is not what I'm going for.

Benetint does not dry out your lips, but the Covergirl Outlast one does. I usually wear lip balm over it anyway, and Benetint does make a more compact version with the stain on one side and a lip gloss on the other. I don't care for glossy lips so prefer a flatter, simple lip balm on top. And I know what you mean about Cure lips, with both the Outlast and the Benetint, you have a few seconds to rub it off before it sets. Henna is scary stainy though, so maybe you should experiment on a sick day in case it doesn't. Or Halloween.

In the lip balm category, I've been using this a lot and love it. It's kinda expensive, again from Sephora, but it lasts a long time. It's not a stain, it's just tinted lip balm so it doesn't feel like greasy lipstick, it's just a soft hint of color and it does double duty of being SPF good.

I have a quiet fear of looking like a whore for some reason, so even when I apply it it's just lightly, I just dab it on and the amount of color is amazing and lasts a long time as well without being an official stain.

Benetint is easy, it only comes in one color. Actually two I guess if you count the new poppy color.

    lead in lipstick
This is a good point, I read it quick but it's good to be aware of these things.
I have a feeling theres lead in a lot of stuff we don't suspect.

I don't think you need to worry about the lead. I think this was a scare a few years ago. Lead pretty much ends up everywhere, since it is in the air, water, soil, etc. Per the FDA, federal standards allow up to 15 micrograms of lead in a liter of drinking water. Even if you used tons of lipstick, you wouldn't be exposed to nearly that amount-only .3 micrograms a day. Federal standards allow more for that in candy.
There is info at fda.gov. if you're interested.

http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/Product...7224.htm#q6Has FDA been aware of concerns about lead in lipstick?

Yes, reports about lead in lipstick are not new. In the 1990s, reports of analytical results from a commercial testing laboratory suggested that traces of lead in lipstick might be of concern. Subsequent evaluation by FDA of that laboratory's test results determined that the method used had not been validated for the analysis of lipsticks. More recently, in October 2007, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) reported finding lead in a selection of twenty-five lipsticks on the market. FDA was not able to determine if a method validated for the analysis of lipstick was used to generate the data in the CSC report. Because reports regarding lead in lipstick have surfaced periodically and because of the amount of time that had elapsed since FDA last examined data and other information on lipsticks in the marketplace, FDA decided that further follow-up was needed.

How has FDA followed up on the latest reports?
FDA scientists developed and validated a highly sensitive method for the analysis of total lead content in lipstick and applied the method to the same selection of lipsticks evaluated by the CSC. FDA found lead in all of the lipsticks tested, ranging from 0.09 ppm to 3.06 ppm with an average value of 1.07 ppm. FDA concludes that the lead levels found are within the range that would be expected from lipsticks formulated with permitted color additives and other ingredients that had been prepared under good manufacturing practice conditions.
An article on FDA's testing method was published in the July/August 2009 issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of Cosmetic Science.1 The article includes results for lead in all the lipsticks we tested. FDA's testing method is now available for use by any suitable analytical laboratory for the determination of total lead in lipstick.

Is there a safety concern about the lead found by FDA in lipsticks?
No. FDA has assessed the potential for harm to consumers from use of lipstick containing lead at the levels found in its testing. Lipstick, as a product intended for topical use, is only ingested incidentally and in very small quantities. FDA does not consider the lead levels that it found in the lipsticks to be a safety concern. FDA also notes that the lead levels that it found are lower than limits recommended by other public health authorities for lead in cosmetics, including lipstick. 2,3

It has been reported that levels of lead in certain lipsticks exceed those for candy. Is this a fair comparison?
No. The FDA-recommended upper limit for lead in candy is 0.1 ppm. It is not scientifically valid to equate the risk to consumers presented by lead levels in candy, a product intended for ingestion, with that associated with lead levels in lipstick, a product intended for topical use and which is ingested in much smaller quantities than candy.

Does FDA intend to continue investigating lead in lipstick?
Yes. FDA does not believe that the lead content found in its recent lipstick analyses is a safety concern. However, the agency is planning to investigate a wider range of lipsticks than has been tested so far, including lipsticks similar to those recently assessed for lead content by another laboratory.4 If FDA determines that a safety concern for lead in lipstick exists, the agency will advise the industry and the public and will take appropriate action under the authority of the FD&C Act in protecting the health and welfare of consumers.

I do see the Dr. Pepper flavor on rare occasions. Your post made me check out the Bonne Bell web site, and it has an interactive "Historical" section where you can look at discontinued Lip Smackers from days of yore:

The Lip Smackers are now sold in small tubes like Chapstick but they used to be big funky thangs:
