Further to the 'Northern Soul' thread, I have re-discovered Irma Thomas' 1963 record "Two Winters Long". At this moment I have to say it's an Essential record. Her voice is terrific; so soulful. The arrangement is very simple (I think someone is playing the electric piano with one finger!).
I've read up about Irma and she seems to be running a club in New Orleans called the Lion's Den. The song makes me want to go and see her soon, even though the guide (see link) makes the district the club is in sound as dangerous as Afganistan.
I think Morrissey would approve.
