Lady GaGa

i'm pretty sure there's a substantially greater chance of that happening with her over britney spears. the day i see britney spears sit down at a piano and play 'speechless', maybe then we can throw down about who's a pop tart and who isn't.

that's not the point. i know you, and i know you like silly pop crap too. my grudge is against the people who would crap on 'blackout' much faster than even gaga; the people who are saying, "THIS IS GARBAGE THAT IS DESTROYING MUSIC! OMG11!!11!!!"

go back to listening to and one, the friggin taylor swift of electronic music

I guess you can argue that And One is silly pop crap too, but no one is saying they are the savior of modern pop music. They also don't rely on silly costumes as part of their "deal."
DON'T EVER TALK CRAP ABOUT AND ONE AGAIN!!!! lolz

the above post was specifically meant to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek and very sarcastic

I know. :) I'm just probably too serious about music.

questioning me for detracting from "people who search for something deeper in the music they listen to" is just as pointless as people attacking me for enjoying music that's silly and, honestly, kind of pointless aside from the feel-good cheese factor.

None of this discussion is pointless. Attacking may be, but questioning and debate- not really. I understand the feel-good thing, as there have been some 'silly' pop songs in the past which I have actually quite liked. I just personally don't see any merit in Lady Gaga as an artist. I have respect for the fact she plays an instrument and writes her own songs (a rare thing in mainstream pop) but she just leaves me cold.

but it doesn't necessarily mean that i should be blocked from enjoying something vapid and silly.

Of course not. I was just questioning you on your views because of your original post.

people who actually gave this record a chance and validated it as something that wasn't dismissable just because they thought she dressed silly will still defend it.

This is true- it's the same for every band, artist, album or genre, and that's fine.

@iamnicola: Pop Music is serious business. What people take too seriously are their own opinions of it.

Agreed.

In the end a good song is a good song and sometimes a pop song is an event, and Lady Gaga has had a string of eventful records and performances. She matters to Pop Culture, and anyone that is this successful is making a connection to the times, or has a message that affects people and it's worth giving her a listen.

Does she, though? Can someone actually pinpoint this? Because frankly I don't get it. I'm not saying that she doesn't have a message that "affects people", but I've seen very little evidence of it.

I really hope I don't come across as a snob or an arsehole in this thread, by the way. I'm really not. :o

I think the evidence is that she has had 5 number one singles in a row. What is it about these songs that makes them so popular? That would really be worth considering. I don't think the answer has to do with the specific content of the lyrics though, and I think we sometimes place too much importance there.

Her image is powerful. I think she may be popular because she expresses an attitude that some people want a part of. It might be a rejection of the atmosphere of hatred and fear that we have been immersed in the past nine years. We need to remember that there is value in entertainment and relaxation.

If anybody remembers a certain lady named Madonna surfacing in the 80's, you might be able to draw comparisons with this. The kids now are as excited about Gaga as the kids were excited about Madonna back then. She has the image, controversy, writes her own stuff, very much in control etc. Very similar.

Ywah exept Madonna is known to be bitchy, and as far as I've seen Lady gaga is a sweetheart, with martin luther king & Gandhi as role models + John lennon.

not sure if ya know what I mean but mhgdk

She might be like Bowie and Madonna but it's been a while since they were like themselves.

I liked 'Poker Face' and 'Bad Romance'...but I don't really see what is newsworthy about her. Admittedly I haven't delved very deeply into her(music). Why is she being discussed so often? Is it because she's bisexual? I think it's a sad reflection on the state of the music business if Lady GaGa is controversial...she has nothing new to offer. It's all been seen before...Bowie, Madonna etc. Her popularity really just shows up the utter, utter vacuity and blandness of people like JLS and whoever else won big at the Brits.

She is the most talented pop artist by a country mile at the moment. I find that very newsworthy considering the alternatives.

In regards to her being bisexual as you speculate above, like Morrissey, she is keeps her personal life private. For this I have huge respect.

That's an opinion I don't share.
The country mile bit(whatever that means)
As to most talented pop artist???
Without doubt she is talented.
I like some of her stuff, don't like some of it.
But that's the same with our friend,I don't like everything he's done.
I just like most of it.

It means "by a long way" but i think you knew that. It must be a Northern saying...

I respect your opinion - who do you think pop-wise is better?

Well I am northern by birth, but have lived in Oxford for 20+ years now.
I have never heard that saying.
I really don't take a lot of notice of the pop charts to be honest.
I tend to listen to stuff that people say they like. Then I'll use spotify to listen to some more if I like it.Then I'll make the decision to buy or not.I do sometimes file share off the newsgroups. But to be honest I'm kind of old fashioned and I like my own hard copy if you know what I mean.
I sort of pick the odd tracks of artists and put them on my player.Which I then listen to at work.

If she ever releases a Cd that's PURE her, all songs written and produced by her, unplugged, without any of the beeps and boops, then I will give her another chance and see what she has to offer, but at this moment I place her right next to the Pussycat Dolls and Pink. She's just there...

Has Morrissey done any of this? Far as I can tell the man only ever played piano on one song in almost thirty years. What a phoney. All quiff, no substance. Hmmmm.

I think the most exciting thing about Lady Gaga is that with the influences she's discussed, and that voice, and her understanding of the pop mentality, is that in three or four albums time she's going to have an AMAZING album. Her songs now are above average, once she's established and totally confident who knows what'll happen? I think the growth just between 'The Fame' and 'The Fame Monster' is quite clear.

Let's not forget both Madonna and Bowie had a few fairly average albums before their generally accepted breakthrough albums. Even The Smiths fans had to wait a while before 'The Queen Is Dead'.

All the following performances are acoustic, the last one is pre-Gaga when she was just a piano and voice girl (there's an EP out there somewhere too, it's hardly spectacular, but she's obviously better at being Lady Gaga than Sandi Thom).

Sorry to jump in but I can't believe you've never heard that saying I;m from Liverpool and I have anyway I'm going to see her at the echo arena and I can't wait, lets hope she doesn't get hit with a bottle.

I think the best way to sort this mess out is to drag up her name or say 5 years from now..or maybe 10 and see who gives a flying f**k about her then. ;)

went to see her last night at the echo arena and she was incredible, haven't had that much fun at a concert for ages, don't care whether she will be around in 10 years time, I only know last night was one of the best concerts I've been to, would I go and see her again? YES:thumb: seriously her voice was so strong, she was entertaining and if you get a chance to see then jump at it.

if anyone wants to save me from 9 pages of reading, just tell me the general consensus on lady gaga on this forum. yea or nay?

i think her first album has a lot of solid tracks and i'm pretty impressed that the first 4 songs on the debut all tore up the charts. my favorite cut is the blantant blondie rip-off "summerboy" though. she's not the strongest singer, but she makes up for it with her nearly flawless pop songwriting. the new CD only has two songs i really dig, "bad romance," and the ace of base-influenced 90's throwback, "alejandro."

oh and kid cudi + kanye west use the acoustic version of "pokerface" so f***ing well in this song:
