    Default New music suggestions?

Last night I went through my cd collection with the hopes of listening to something to inspire me when I started thinking, I really need some new music!

Of course I have a love affair with all my cd's, but there comes a time when you need something to breathe new life in you.

Here's a list of some of my favorite artists so you can see which way I lean.

    Moz/Smiths
    Jeff Buckley
    Belle and Sebastian
    The Red House Painters
    Rufus Wainwright
    The Ocean Blue
    The Magnetic Fields

Suggestions please? Feel free to pummel me.

Thanks for those, I actually already love Trembling Blue Stars and Bright Eyes.
I'll give the others a listen. Do you happen to have the latest cd by TBS? If you do, what do you think?

    Default Trembling Blue Stars

Nice to see that Trembling Blue Stars are getting mentions again. I can't tell you the power that this band has over me. I was treated to a special acoustic after show @ their recent Los Angeles gig back in November. The moment is still etched in my mind till this day. Well anyway I just wanted to say that I am a huge fan of theirs also and made my own little tribute paage towards them.

I'd definately recommend Tompaulin if you like B&S. A really similar vibe. Spearmint are shiny pop ... a little like The Lightning Seeds, but with better tunes and better lyrics. The Go-Betweens were an Australian band from the 80's. Vaguely Smiths-y, but with a bit more of a New york influence. Every album they made was genius ..... Hefner are an English 4 peice. "The Fidelity Wars" is the best album about relationships ever, and rivals the lyrics from the first Smiths album for terrific, witty angst.

Email me if you want any more info on any odf these, or others, or if you want a compilation tape or something. (Just click on my profile .......)

I do have the latest one from TBS. In the beginning, it sounds kind of like the Cure. But that's a good thing.
Also recommended the Divine Comedy but I'm sure you've heard it, and Kings of Convienence. Black Box Recorder would be good too, since your name is Sad Girl.

    Default Sportique

Sportique are worth a listen. They've got a new LP out at the end of the month. Their music is heavily routed in the late 70s, verging on pastiche, but the tunes are glorious.

Default And the songs that saved your life

These are not exactly new but if you don't have it, you should pick up their music.

    * Nick Drake (I prefer the 'Fruit Tree' compilation of it all, but if that's too costly you should start with 'Five Leaves Left')

    * Modest Mouse (another not to new band, but) (I would suggest buying
'The Moon & Antarctica') (I especially love track 13)

    * Trashcan Sinatras 'Cake' (yes, it's out of print, but hopefully you'll be able to find a used copy somewhere)

    * Anything by 'the Stranglers' (particularly any album where you can have the song 'Golden Brown') (I don't have any of their albums, but I've heard good things...and again they're not exactly a new band but....)

And that's all that I can think of off the top of my head. Happy cd shopping!

Would suggest the Go Betweens Greatest Hits is a good bet. 16 Lovers Lane is nice though.

All the Hefner stuff has at leat 3 or 4 amazing tunes on. Not the Drum n'bass hefner!

The Stranglers were a big influence on me in those hazy days in the late 70's.. so, with respect Golden Brown is one of their most dull songs, not reprsentative of their sound at all.. get the early stuff.. (Get A ) Grip, Something better Change, 5 Minutes, Rockit To the Moon.. Hanging Around is a magnificent moment as well..

And they were The ORIGINAL MenInBlack!
