Moptopped Johnny can hang out with Beastie Boys producers, Bernard Sumner, Noel Gallagher and loser Beck all he wants. I'll take Alain Whyte anyday.

I think that if the Smiths were ever to reunite, it would be a the music festival. Don't you think that it's more than a coindience that Johnny and Morrissey are to play at the same venue?

Moz is a man who likes to surprise, but a reunion? Nah, everybody (inclusing Morrissey and Marr) would have to compare the "new" Smiths with the old ones. And as the "old" Smiths are a legend, the new couldnīt be the same.
Look at all these 80s bands trying a comeback. Nothing worth talking about. Listened to the new Madness single? It sucks. Yes, the Madness reunion gig was definitely great (I wasnīt there, just saw the video). So maybe this would be a better idea : One or twi Smiths reunion gigs or maybe even a reunion tour - with some new, but mostly old material - that would be it!

I voted for the Coachella "reunion," but I don't think all four Smiths will EVER get back together.

Regarding Coachella, how can they NOT? I mean, it would just be too foolish for them both to be on the same night, and not play together, for even one song. That song? Hmm..."How Soon is Now," or "Hand in Glove." Oooh, or maybe "Paint a Vulgar Picture!" God, I'm swooning!!!

I HAVE GOT TO GO TO THIS THING.

Pleaaaase! Stop dreaming. How could you even want a Smiths reunion. Just accept what a beautiful thing it was and then it was over and perhaps you missed it and perhaps you didn't. The Smiths today, after everything that has happened between them, would be really sad to see. It's like a relationship gone bad and wanting it to go on just because you don't have the guts to move on. Has anyone been paying attention to what Morrissey has been saying about giving him credit for his solo career. This is morrissey-solo.com isn't????????? Even if Morrissey does play that Indio Festival (which I don't know why he would. I mean Chemical Brothers, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Morrissey??????) and he does get together with Marr, It's still not The Smiths.... Nothing ever will. Morrissey does not need The Smiths... He is Morrissey.

I don't believe that Morrissey is the type of person that forgives easily those people he feels has wronged him. Remember that lawsuit?????? He pitched a fit about that. No, I can't believe that Morrissey would have anything to do with Andy or Mike anytime soon. Besides, reuniting to begin new projects would be tacky. Maybe a one-time tour or something. But Moz and Johnny? I definitely believe that! Everyone reading this needs to go to Coachella. We can't be outnumbered by lame Beck and Chemical Brothers fans! By the way, Jose, a great poll idea!

Yes, Yes, marr and Morrissey playing the same festival on he same day - Oh, how I hope they do reunite - come on - all of you deep down want the Smiths (or just marr and Morrissey) to be back together. Admit it. Every Smiths alblum bleeds beautiful music, oh every song, they never get old. Morrissey has made many fine songs solo, but they seem a little detached, a little out of tune except for Southpaw which at times is very very beutiful music, but mostly its not as pretty as the Smiths music. Come on, a reunioun, it wouldnt be so bad, a few new songs, other bands arent the Smiths, thats why thier reuniouns dont work. Just Think, a new Smiths alblum the covers and all, a tour, interviews, lyrics, music. They have to get together in Cochella, Oh I hope so, I hope so - the music goes on, Smiths is UnDead - Morrissey and Marr, please do it again.

are there any other artists out there who understand that often times great creations (the smiths' songs in this case) are the product of not just the people in the band, but a product of where everyone was in their lives at the time? i doubt any of the members are the same people they were in the early eighties just as i doubt anyone is the same person that they were 15 plus years ago. what i'm saying is, getting the smiths back together would be a risky thing. they may get together and really connect but then again they may just end up being four different people trying to write songs. in any case, i doubt they'll ever be able to come up with anything that can compare to their old stuff considering the pedestal many of us have placed their material on. whatever happens happens. its up to morrissey, marr, rourke, and joyce to decide whether or not it feels right at the moment. ... anyone else agree?

Okay, time for my two cents. First, Morrissey's brilliant solo material will always more than suffice. His lyrics and voice still speak to me even stronger than with the Smiths. Second, YES I believe that one day he will be in his 50's and look back on his illlustrious career and reflect on a fun time he had with a neat little band from his old home town. Stranger things in rock have happened, my friends. I know not many of you agree with me but--if anybody had told me that all original members of KISS would put back on their make-up and play their old hits again, I would have mocked you. Well, we know what happened. Fleetwood Mac vowed NEVER. David Lee Roth and Van Halen a rift far greater than that of The Smiths did in fact reunite briefly, I could go on -- Sex Pistols, Eagles (huge creative rift), etc. Lastly, Marr is not confirmed to go on stage with Beck. I told Richard Blade PERSONALLY that everyone was talking about Beck and Moz on the same bill and HE TOOK IT UPON HIMSELF to announce that Johnny would be joining Beck onstage. Richard does NOT know that for a FACT. He's just trying to perpetuate everybody's already overactive hopes. Yes, I believe that all four of the Smiths will one day eventually reunite but probably only a tour and no new material. Elvis-eye good comment. Out.

Johnny and Morrissey were made for each other. A reunion would be a great thing. But i think that they are too much proud to do it. Anyway, i am dreaming for this reunion from 1987 (after Smiths split!). But i think that dreams have a knack of just not coming true (but Coachella is *not* against us now).

I can see Morrissey and Mr. Marr forgetting about the past and doing a set together at some festival or another, but as for the other two...sadly it will never happen.

I wonder what the next Moz album will sound like. I hope it will be better than Maladjusted. I won't stand to listen to stuff that is even remotely similar to "Roy's Keen", or "He Cried."

first of all I just wanna thank david for such a cool page and keeping me updated on whats up w/ MOZ and also jose, mi amigo latino, for the amazing news of a possible MOZ and MARR reunion at coachella, the fact of a SMITHS reunion blows me away, so "PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, LET ME GET WHAT I WANT". by the way the three songs that I want to hear the most at coachella are:
1)"BIGMOUTH STRIKES AGAIN"
2)"HOW SOON IS NOW"
3)"THERE IS A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT"

i feel moz and the rest of his manchester mates will come back together and rock the music world once again...but be prepared not to here any old smiths classics...Exclusively new and explosive...only thing remaining the same is great, introspective lyrics accompanied by tremendous musicianship; each great and equal by themself, but once combined unparalled to anything (except for maybe U2 or REM)

We would profit by Marr and Morrissey's collaboration. No one would disagree with me when I say that there is a stagnation in music in our time. Boy bitch bands are rampant, rock is not all that could be, no one is really interesting right now since Kurt Cobain killed himself, Wierd al Yankovic is popular, Cover songs are abundant where there are soundtrack albums to cater to these poeple, one hit wonders are becoming more furious(yes, livin' la vida loca), Woodstock was a disaster I can't even name most of the popular bands these days. Morrissey and Marr comming together can do no harm and could even jump start a stagnating music scene. And by the way this is what the Smiths did in the eighties. Most of the rabid morrisey fans and Smiths cognizati object to Johnny Marr and Morrissey's would be collaboration, but what about the rest of casual listeners, It would be nice to hear some music that move people once again.

Note to Junior in Hawaii: Don't even bother with Belle and Sebastian. That is, unless you're steadfastly white, boring, and possess no soul - and you're 13. Belle and Sebastian are the dryest band I've ever heard. And I own their entire collection including some of their unreleased material and side projects. I've never listened to any of their songs more than three times because I was afraid of turning to stone. I've heard that their lyrics aren't bad though. I myself couldn't bear to pay attention.

No more support for Belle and Sebastian!

As far as a reunion goes, I think it's likely that at least Morrissey and Marr will work together again. I doubt that they would record any new material, but perhaps a couple of Marr "guest spots" aren't too far off. After all, being co-defendants in a law suit must require a little contact. Remember how much damage there was between the Beatles (probably the band MOST plagued by "Will they reunite?" questions)?
Even with all that damage (law suits, money squabbles, damaged business partnerships) John Lennon said it best: "You never know..It's [a reunion] always in the wind." Look at all the examples...Sex Pistols, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac,
and, yes, the surviving Beatles. Also, consider this: Morrissey was being sued by Craig Gannon and Andy Rourke at the time of their concert that was filmed and spliced in between the videos on "Hulmerist!" THAT didn't stop Morrissey from playing..HE HIMSELF suggested the gig! Now if that isn't strange, I don't know WHAT is! I truly feel it will happen eventually.

RE: Moz/Marr collaboration.

I think it's a definite possibility that the two will collaborate at some point on stage at Coachella. The signs are too numerous - Marr in LA, MOZ in LA, Moz's known fondness for Beck's music, the KROQ hype of a possible Smiths reunion. I think there will be a magical moment where Marr comes on stage near the end of Morrissey's set. I expect that Boz and Alain will stay on stage and play rhythm and bass guitars. I also think that Marr will play along with at least 1 Moz solo song and 1 Smiths classic.

If I didn't live 4000 miles from California, I'd be taking the trip down - this could be a sort-of reunion in the making. As far as continued collaborations, I highly doubt anything else will come of this concert, maybe it will at least raise the possibility of a reconciliation in the future, now that the money issues are pretty well sorted out.

Without a doubt the
Smiths could pick up right where they left off. Morrissey and Marr would both be better off. Moz
by himself is only half as good as he could be with Johnny and Johnny if you read this the same definately holds true for you. People who say the Smiths should not get back together because it will tarnish all the old memories of the way they were, get real and have some faith in the man
you all constantly fawn over!

Smiths, Unite and take over....
Miami Beach - Mon, Aug 09, 1999 at 07:30:05 (PDT) | #43

I think the ones who are voting for a reunion are mixing up fellings.... I know you want this reunion, but if you think a little bit you will realize this is something that will not happen, as far as we know Morrissey. Re-issue, Re-package, Re-evaluate the songs, extra track and a tacky badge..... And if they reunite the original Smiths lacks the sense, all the musics will sound untrue.... And I am not talking about the other things that make this reunion sounds a dream that will never come true... Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke with that money things against Moz and all the things that made Marr split from the Smiths, so everything blow up.... See Echo & The Bunnymen... Their last 2 albuns were ok, but is there something better than what they did, when they were the real ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN??? I don't think so.... So what is the point, why do we need to live thinking about the past. You're regarding me that people who used to be teens at the 70's... time pass and they were trapped in the past... They just like tha old things... And in the 80's we used to call them DINOSSAURS. So don't turn into a DINOSSAUR FROM THE 80'S. LIVE THE PRESENT. IF YOU HAVE MORRISSEY, WHY YOU HAVE TO DREAM WITH THE SMITHS. The past is past... Listen to Hatful of Hollow, Meat is Murder, The Queen is Dead, Strangeways.... but don't expect Morrissey with Marr, Rourke and Joyce again.... If it happens, please don't call them Smiths.... Thanks

(yawns) It'll never happen, if by some miracle it does, it'll be a Morrissey/Marr collaboration, they essentially were The Smiths, and it's unlikely to be under that name. They were a match made in heaven but despite his protestations, Johnny needs Morrissey more than he needs him.

I feel it's just a matter of time until a Smiths reunion occurs. Whether we like or not, money is a driving factor in people's decisions. Think about it, how many of us would pay a premium price to the Smiths live? No doubt I would. The band members stand to make a pretty penny (pound) with a reunion. It's just a matter of time.

Why would Morrissey and Marr need Rourke and Joyce, they were the Smiths, or hasn't anybody read the credits on the cds. Words by Morrissey/Music by Marr, ring a bell? But if Marr and Morrissey did get together, I would hardly doubt they would call themselves The Smiths again. They know its over, why dont you?

After the lawsuit and settlement Morrisey is never going to reunite with Rourke and Joyce. And, while I'd love to see Morrisey and Marr as much as the next fan, I think the chances are slim. Of course, maybe I'm just jealous being on the East coast so far away from the site of a possible collaboration...

Last month I was buying some CDīs (some of Smiths) in the Tower Records of Picadilly Circus, then a cool looking guy started talking to me about the band. He was from Manchester and knew closely everybody on the band - rourke, marr and joyce - but not morrissey though. After some introdutions, I made him only one question:"Will they ever return?" Why is Neil H Enet the ONLY person that realises Andy O'Rourke and Mike Joyce were a HUGE part of why you love the Smiths?????? Yes, Morrissey is lyrically phenominal and Johnny always has the right lick or arrangement. BUT COME ON, Andy's bass part's are what drive the songs. I've been listening almost 40 yrs. Andy's lick's over-shadow anybody in rock/pop. Entwhistle is faster, McCartney more melodic. But Andy's the best example of inspiration and playfulness without, in any way, over-shadowing the melody or lyrics. A much harder task than showing-off. Yes, he deserve's the name association to those relics even older then I. And no, I do not listen to classic rock but I do have a memory still. I could go on about Mike but I'll end by saying (especially to you Boy Afraid) WE ALL LOVE MORRISSEY AND OVERLOOK HIS CONTROLLING MANNER. ANDY AND MIKE DID GET RIPPED-OFF BY MOZ. IT'S WELL DOCUMENTED, PERIOD. THEY ARE NOT GREEDY OR EVIL. JUST MORE EASY-GOING AND NAIVE. MOZ HAS NO REASON TO BE UPSET WITH THEM. HE WILL REALISE THIS.

I've said this before. If anyone can speak of a Smiths reunion without mentioning Andy Rourke, a certain insight is severely lacking. Those of us who are musicians immediately recognize an unusual talent in Rourke. In some cases (including "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now") Andy lifted the song to a new level in a very subtle way. Non-musicians will not care about this view, but I for one will never overlook Rourke's underrated contributions to the Smiths mystique.

If M & M did work together again it would be the most disappointing thing. You wouldn't actually get Smiths-quality songs, you know! Morrissey isn't much of a lyric writer these days, and Marr's tunes aren't so hummable either.
If they get together then you'll really know it's over.
