  • Don't complain about lack of options. You've got to pick a few when you do multiple choice. Those are the breaks.
  • Feel free to suggest poll ideas if you're feeling creative. I'd strongly suggest reading the past polls first.
  • This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.

The last poll got me to really thinking about what my life would be like if The Smiths never existed. Where would I be today?? While there are several really good bands around, as a whole their material and personalities are not enough to inspire my devotion as the Smiths/Morrissey have, so i could not even answer the question.

While I still can't imagine my life without Morrissey......I can say that Elvis gets my vote on this poll.

I see your point, but Bolan's career is somewhat complicated. Here are some facts to which you may already know, but I feel others should know as well...

Marc started off as a folk singer and formed the band John's Children. After their demise he then spent nearly two years, I think, writing songs that would be featured on the first Tyrannosaurus Rex LP - a duo that consisted of only Bolan and a percussionist. It was only after Marc fired the percussionist and then hired Micky Finn that Marc thankfully ditched the folk sound and we hear the electric songs come to life. With Finn on board, Marc then shortened Tyranosaurus Rex to T.Rex - still a duo. After working with Tony Visconti and releasing Ride a White Swan, T.Rex expanded to a quartet - and the rest is history.

Unfortunately, Marc let himself go and the band ended, but in 1977 things started to look good for Bolan again. He had his own television show (of course called 'Marc') where he introduced new bands and also performed his own songs. After this he put together another band - and I don't think it had a name. I think it was just a backing band. He asked The Damned to open as a support act to get young kids interested.

Sadly, Marc's life ended that year, but who knows where this new direction would have taken him. He was a man with great determination and talent. I don't think much could have stopped him to reach his goals. Other than a speeding, out of control car...

So, really, it was always Marc Bolan. He wrote everything, named everything, got everything together and without him - T.Rex would never have existed.

      Sorry for rambling...

  • For me, it has to be La Mome Piaf. Even now, 47 years after her death, her music is still inspiring and much imitated, and her mystique still enthralls. Like Morrissey, she is more than a singer, she is an icon.

Songs like "La Vie en Rose," "Hymne a l'Amour" or "Non, Je ne Regret Rien" are timeless, passionate and universal. Her style was transcendent, and her vocals have a great melancholy and power that few have ever been able to match. Her phrasing was exquisite.

Unfortunately, most of the existing video is from the end of her career, but I can only imagine the power of her earlier performances; she had a great swagger that seemed to hide a tremendous vulnerability. It's no wonder that she had such a fanatical, devoted following.

When Morrissey sings "I've Changed My Plea to Guilty" he is positively channeling Piaf, and Morrissey resembles Piaf more than he does any other singer I can think of.

Bowie is next in line. He never seems to reveal himself in his performances, but he is a great work of art.

What I really noticed were all the great artists left off the list such as Elton John, Kristin Hersh, Neil Young, Dwight Yoakam, B.B. King, Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, Kirsty MacColl, Keiko Matsui, Jimi Hendrix, Skye, etc., etc. Elton John is truly phenomenal. His magnificent work between the years 1969-1975 is truly his best! Some of his great songs of that era include, "I Need You To Turn To"(1969), "The Greatest Discovery"(1969), "Sixty Years On"(1969), "Come Down In Time"(1970), "Madman Across The Water" (1971), "Indian Sunset" (1971), "Rotten Peaches" (1971), "Salvation" (1972), "Slave"(1972), "Rocket Man" (1972), "I'm Gonna Be A Teenage Idol" (1973), "Have Mercy On The Criminal" (1973), "Daniel" (1973), "Blues For Baby & Me" (1973), "I've Seen That Movie Too"(1973), "The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909-1934) (1973), "Dirty Little Girl" (1973), "All The Girls Love Alice" (1973), "Roy Rogers" (1973), "Social Disease" (1973), "Pinky" (1974), "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" (1974), "Sick City" (1974), "House Of Cards" (1975), "Captain Fantastic....." • Phil Ochs by far. I love everything about that man. And he did more than John Lennon for people. He just wasn't a millionaire. Actually John asked him for ideas.

Anyone heard him, or of him? Absolute Purity and Dark Tragedy in his music...

    PHIL OCHS. R.I.P.

  • the records are under the name "Morrissey", therefore he's a solo artist. most solo artists hav major and mainstay collaborators, but if it's under their name their solo.
