    "Stop Me...", surely- although strictly speaking a misquote (without humming the whole song through to check). A bit of an empty poll, this one- and surprisingly few choices, although maybe that's the lot. I now have to check his entire repertoire to see if there are any more...!

      may not be the world, but I love the end of the song where he keeps singing "I love you." It reminds me of a how a parent feels about a child. No matter what the kid does the parent still loves him/her and I feel the same way towards Morrissey. I may not agree with all of his politics, but I still love the man and his music.

        "I love you, it's murder" - Enough said, this lyric hit me so hard the first time I heard it. So simply, yet so striking.
        Not the best song overall, but in terms of telling someone I love you, followed by "its murder" is just so powerful. :)

              not that iwould vote for it in this poll- nothing much gets a vote when up against "Stop Me..."- but "I Am Two People" is tragically overlooked by many.

              the YATQ b-sides were so good- better than the album itself- and only a few are oft praised. "I Am Two People", "Teenage Dad On His Estate", "Slum Mums" and "The Public Image" are all amazing songs, especially lyrically, and they never get the credit they deserve.

                  They really were up there with the best Smiths stuff. Here we have Angel and Maudlin way up at, or close to, the top of the poll, beating or getting close to some fantastic Smiths songs like Stop Me, Strange and Hooligan.
                  If only Moz had kept good working relations with Stephen Street, just think how different his solo career could have been...

                  It's hard, the choice here. No one tells I love you like this man does, in no matter what song. Maudlin Street makes me want to cry every time I hear it, but is it reason enough to vote for it as best "I love you" song?

                    A tremendous song and what is wonderful is the way he sings it. His voice is achingly plaintive and makes me extremely emotional when I hear it. I think the power of the man comes through strongly in this song and in this line.

                    Essentially, what is often a cliched line has real strength and force when delivered by our man. Like all of Mozzer's best stuff the song has a potent mixture of beauty and sadness.

                      Okay – I know the lyric was strictly in a different tense to the line up for consideration here, but still, I'm slightly disappointed that 'Now My Heart Is Full' wasn't included for this poll. Morrissey's enunciation of the line 'But Bunny, I loved you' is one of his great moments, the ultimate cri de coeur, the sound of a man who's just, after a lifetime of hesitancy and hiding, learned who to express himself emotionally. And the fact that it's in the past tense gives it a desperate and poignant air of regret.
