  • Don't complain about lack of options. You've got to pick a few when you do multiple choice. Those are the breaks.
  • Feel free to suggest poll ideas if you're feeling creative. I'd strongly suggest reading the past polls first.
  • This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.

I don't disagree with a lot of what you say, but just because people scratched their arms with sincerity doesn't mean that Morrissey sincerely believes it. There are plenty of examples where Morrissey uses a character's words as a club to beat them with. "The poor and the needy are selfish and greedy," "England for the English," and "No one ever sees me when I cry" are just a few examples of this.

Within the context of the song, I just don't see this as being meant seriously. The fair is violent, vulgar, and emotionally charged ...and the senses being dulled are his. To the characters at the fair, attraction is cheap (grease in the hair), thrills are cheap (skirt ascends), love is not valued much (engagement ring), and rejection is over-dramatized (top of the parachutes.)

In contrast to all of this is the refrain: Morrissey leaves alone, but still has faith in love. Faith is an interesting choice of words, generally meaning something that you believe that if you can't see/prove. Now, as you say, scratching names was a fad in the 70's, and as it was mentioned in the song, it was no doubt plentiful at the fair. So if Morrissey believes these to be authentic expressions of love, why the need for faith?

Again, as you say, the person doing the "scratching" would genuinely "love" the person in question. I would say that they "love" them, but don't love them. Just like the girl threatening suicide-by-carnival-ride, we don't doubt the emotional authenticity of the statement, only the literal truth of it.

At best, it is meant ironically, with a smirk and a wink. At worst, it is another example of the superficiality of the fair, and meant sarcastically. Ultimately, who really knows? Maybe it's both, maybe it's neither.

Use a Sharpie in those situations if you want to avoid this embarrassing scene:

At a show some years back, I did my usual and wrote "Mozzer" on my arm with one of the markers at before a show. While I was in line, several people commented on my cool "ink." I felt pretty cool, until I realized that after spending 20 minutes outside in 95 degree heat, the words HAD BEGUN TO RUN down my arm!!!

I was so embarrased, so I had my friend hold my place in line, and I ran to the 7-11 a quarter mile down from the venue to wash my arm and buy an indelible Sharpie pen to do a rewrite.

After getting back, I showed my smug mockers the NEW writing. During the actual show, I waved my arms the whole time up in the air. I think Morrissey saw me all the way back in row R, because when he looked my way, he gave an approving nod. I never felt so loved.
