Travis remembers Morrissey
Posted on Fri, May 19 2000 at 9:20 a.m. PDT

From Quick Quinn:

I drove up to Philadelphia last Wed. (05/10) to attend the Travis show with my brother John at the TLA on South St. A very good show by these up and coming Scots but probably the funnest moment of the evening came when a member of the audience down front handed lead singer Fran Healy a single flower. Seeming not to know what to do with it for a moment he put the flower in his back pocket and sang "The boy with a thorn in his side" then turned to his right, pointed at his bass player and squeeked "oh you handsome devil". We all had a jolly good laugh and the majority of the crowd seemed to "get" and appreciate the reference.

Travis is in my cd player right now as I surf moz-solo. I have not felt this strong about a band or a singer (Fran Healy), in fact since Morrissey and the Smiths-I would say, funny coincidence, but its not really, true talent shows a pattern of conformity to eachother- Or is it that talent just steals?

I heard something about Morrissey being seen at one of their shows (yes, more speculation). If it's true that Travis played at a Virgin Megastore here in California, then the rumor just might be true.

Now i know how Joan of Arc felt,

Indeed TRAVIS are the next best thing to MORRISSEY. The guys voice is just awesome. I recommed "Why does it always rain on me", "U16 Girls" (from their first album). Great band. They'll be just like the smith. Their to smart and serious for the MTV crowd. and never get media attention.

You have to check out their version of Britney Spear's "Hit me baby one more time"...quit charming and funny.

Dammnit why can't over-sea bands like TRAVIS get played on American radio. I honestly think us Americans are being deprived (s/c) from such bands like TRAVIS, SUEDE, CATATONIA, GOMEZ and what have you. I hate buying ablums a year later after they been in England. AMerica get a clue..

just a daily rant........

Travis not given media attention?

Over here (UK) you just can't get away from them. They've had a TV special, adverts on TV for their album (almost unheard of for an 'alternative' band) and have picked up loads of awards on a televised music awards show (The Brits).

The music press run articles every week (or month) about them and their last album sold more copies last year than any other group.

Yep, you've guessed it, I'm fed up with them. :-)

Mozcowboy: Ive heard their version of "baby one more time" And at first thought it was hilarious but after a while it actually starts sounding good doesnt it? Heh..

Anyway alot of bands get alot of press and everyone makes a fuss over them and they dont deserve it, they arent doing anything worth hearing but for some odd reason are EVERYWHERE.

At least this is a band that deserves it! Anyone agree? :-) .. Too bad their Album came out so late is the US by the time i heard of them it was too late to see them tour.. eh maybe they will make it back to california sometime.

Fully agree with Moz Cowboy. Travis were here in Atlanta 2 weeks ago and Fran charmed the pants off the rather unruly crowd, most of whom were waiting for Oasis. btw, after the gracious Travis, the Gallaghers were disgusting. If you go to the 1997 KROQ interview on this site, Moz mentioned Travis way back then.

Travis will be here pretty soon. In the US atleast. They will tour late this year. Has anyone seen the video for their new single 'Coming Around'? Great if you ask me. Travis is a great band and they are nice lads too! Check them out if you can. You'll be pleased!

Travis isn't bad, but stop saying they're great.
"The Man Who" is formulaic. The formula is as follows...

Travis = Fran trying to sound like Thom + Oasis chord structures.

oasis and thom? i've noticed the people who make comments like that either reads the press too much and haven't listened to the album except a few seconds of it. how bout the lyrics? travis's music doesn't sound anything like oasis. and the only way fran is similar to thom is they share similar vocal range.

Travis is a good band. I really like their album but I find that they sound so much like Radiohead. That's the only thing that disturbs me since originality is lacking in today's music and bands.

I've had the good fortune in the last few weeks to see Travis twice, first opening up for Oasis at Radio City, and then at their sold out show at Irving Plaza. All I can say is that NYC has needed a good kick of decent music and we're finally getting it. If you can believe this, they're actually getting airplay on K-Rock, which usually only plays hard rock like Metallica and Kid Rock. THANK GOD we've finally been treated to someone like Travis on NY radio lately. Rhythm and melody seem to be making a comeback and Travis are leading the way.

Their melodies are gorgeous, Fran sounds like somebody else on every single song(in fact, when I heard "Why Does It Always Rain..." for the first time, I thought it was a new James single, for I thought it was Tim Booth singing!), which is a testament to his vocal range, and they're probably the most likeable bunch of chaps that I've seen hit the stage in a long, long time. They seem very sincere, and that goes a long way in my book.

C'mon folks. This is a good bunch of lads, making great music that's refreshing to what's being played on radio these days. Let's give them their proper respect and enjoy the ride their on.

Mikey
P.S. Regarding "Coming Around", they played it at the Irving Plaza show, and you would have thought it was already a radio hit here in the states. Everyone loved it and was po-going throughout. Can't wait for the new album.

Look, Travis are good, but Belle and Sebastian are the closest thing to The Smiths that this silly new millenium has, o.k? Listen to "Put the book back on the shelf" or "If you're feeling Sinister", and you will see why, if you haven't already.
