Problems in Morrissey-solo discussion board and chat
Posted on Fri, May 19 2000 at 9:11 a.m. PDT
by David T. <david@morrissey-solo.com>
Recently there have been several problems with people abusing the anonymity of the chatroom and discussion boards. This is a growing problem - most recently I have seen cases of harassment and 'name hijacking' with racist postings.

First of all, I will say that you are not completely anonymous when you post or enter the chatroom. I do not mind forwarding whatever information I have in the log files to authorities who request them. It is only a few individuals causing the problems and they aren't exactly the smartest computer hackers in the world.

I used to display the resolved IP address of those who post but I changed that policy because I believe there is some value in being able to post anonymously and there are also other privacy issues. However, this system does lend itself to abuse.

If anyone has any suggestions let me know. I will consider a login system for allowing people to post or enter the chatroom if there is a strong demand for it.

A log in system works a treat on the jeepster home page!!

simple -- include the IP addresses back in with the posts. it'll eliminate the frauds and idiots and possibly bring back some of the people who actually used to visit the message boards before the message boards got awful.

IP addresses do not help when people are using the Internet at universities, libraries, work, etc. As long as people are not breaking the law, who cares what they post or do in the chat room. Inflammatory comments are fine, deal with it. However, harassment should not be tolerated.

By the way, Morrissey sucks

Sad to say but I will have to agree with
M.S. You really can't control the comments.
People will post questionable material even
under a login environment. The best thing to
do would be setting up a word filter or actually monitoring it manually.

By the way, Morrissey sucks, shouldn't you be wearing a helmet? I don't get your sarcasm.

Suffer's comments are apalling. Anyone who demands censorship manually, or through a computer chip to delete certain words or "questionable" material is a fascist. I would like to see what you would think if you found out "shoplifters of the world" didn't recieve airplay because it was found to be objectionable. It's just silliness, and the real beasts who pose infringement on people are the ones who pontificate that their morals and opinions shall dictate others. What happened to ideas and free-thought. Certainly, Morrissey would be opposed to a system which allocated oppression of offensive thought.

Why not start with deleting Morrissey's quote about Linder Sterling, 'cos it is laced with male chauvanism(?).

Grow up and tolerate

Is alarcon assuming supreme judgement in discerning the idiots from the pretentious fools who used to visit this site. Well, Alarcon, Michaela, whoever you are pales in importance to what you are- You have subscribe to this dreconian perspective on things it seems. So, because you're disenchanted with the site, you see fit to eliminate those who you find disturbing. Why do you feel personal preference should yet again, govern others' speech?

You're foolish, ghoulish and childish, and in a rather vulgar fashion.

How about a civil discussion without being so surly...All that was suggested is that each person posting information/comments on this site id themselves so as to limit some of the attacks. I posted one slightly sarcastic comment on the discussion board and had my name stolen and used to post racist garbage.

Freedom of speech is a powerful tool. Good and bad. Some people choose to use it to inform and to shed light on different perspectives; no matter how vulgar and shocking it might be, it's protected. However, "Suffer is wrong", your silly little mind is wandering from the point of my post. I was making reference to the harassment and racism that could lead to legal issues. Would you want this happening in your garden?

Something has to be done. To see the rapid demise of a once wonderful board is a horrifying sight. These past six or so months we have had to endure the inane and profane posts of one person who took on ever evolving personas and continually attacked anyone who dared to post a serious or thoughtful message. Racism became the main topic insead of Morrissey. Days go by when there are no posts that even mention Morrissey's name. His extended tour was almost entirely ignored on the board. Please do something. Save the board or tuck it away under your wing.

Freedom of speech? what about our right not to be harrassed and abused? The Radiohead site has a login-password system and everything seems to go fine.

I think David already is using some type of language filter. But it's not offensive language that is ruining the boards, it's the mean-spiritness and stupidity. I think David should bring back the discussion board he tried to implement at the start of the year, but make logging in mandatory. That would eliminate the name stealing, at least.

If I may? People are childish. And children, when ignored, go away eventually. At least, that's my experience. There's nothing wrong with being childish, but one must simply understand how to deal with them. A crack on the head? No. Dave, don't put yourself through unnecessary stress. Do nothing. Maybe they'll just go away? I don't know. You do such a good job with this website, I'm sure whatever you decide to do will suffice. Thanks for everything you do, Dave. Take good care.

Jamie, if it hasn't gone away after all these months, it isn't going to go away on its own. Intervention is definitely necessary now. There is only the method to consider now. It is sad that the immaturity of a few should affect the many Morrissey fans so.

It IS sad but I am trying to take it with a grain of salt. We are quite a diverse group, and while I do not enjoy vulgarity, I guess it may be a sign of the times and something we just have to put up with. I still think you have the BEST site David, and if putting up with a few idiots is the price, then to me it's worth it! CHEERS!!!

David,
I am sorry after all the hard FREE work you put into this site that some people abuse it. However I don't think a login system would be a good solution. I like the quickness of posting messages here and the anominity of it. Why not let the reader beware and know that names are just names and people are liars, cheats and thieves and that this site is as much an example of that as of Morrissey fans sharing a passion. Thank you David for this great site.

I think we're all adult enough to deal with offensive posting on the discussion boards. You can't stifle freedom of expression.

But the current trend of impersonation in the chatroom is unacceptable, and the harrasment, viruses and hate-mail received by people who choose to display their e-mail is just downright abhorrent. A lot of people I know are turning their backs on something that used to be really enjoyable because their names are being tainted. I for one am now very weary when in 1-to-1 conversation with someone I know because on several occasions those people have suddenly started hurling abuse at me for no reason and revealed themselves as imposters...

Perhaps then we could have a system whereby everyone's nickname(s)is linked to their individual password. Hence, no invasion of privacy, but people can trust that someone else won't be able to reduce their reputation to dirt.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ghostface and Jeff. Give us unique passwords, and the abusive people can go kick their dog if they wish! (Not really, I am an animal lover! :)

We need to set up an abuse and harassment assessment committee. First, the formal definitions of harassment and abuse need to be clearly spelled out. Second, a plan for identifying, judging, and punishing offenders needs to be set up. Third, after steps one and two are complete, the plan in its entirety needs to be added to the Morrissey-Solo logon page (like a EULA) so that all who enter understand the rules of the website. After all that is done, we can all get back to celebrating...umm...whom are we celebrating again?

So what if you get the IP? Where do you go to link an IP with an individual name if you are not law enforcement?

Suggestions:

1. Keep the current format since most folks seem very very attached to it.

2. Provide a registration (with password) option for people who want to reserve a handle for themselves. That way nobody else can use it. Do this for the general message board, the news boards and the chat. Just stick a password field under the 'name' field.

3. Allow everyone else to use whatever names haven't been reserved, if they don't want to bother with passwords and stuff.

That ought to bring a halt to some of the big problems, at least. Oh, and

4. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MORRISSEY! Hooray! I'll set off some sparklers for you tonight (since it's Victoria day too).

i haven't got one

People have "stolen" my name to write racist crap too. It is really tragic that people have to write racist garbage, but there is not much you can do. Even with a sign in policy, one can still set up for an account and write what they want anyway.

The problem is Morrissey attracts crazy people who are insecure about them selves and who like to put others down. They are just shadowing their loser hero Morrissey. Morrissey always spouts hate, how he hates this group, how he hates this political leader, how he hates this city, that country, etc... Until these Morrissey fans get help, they will remain losers like their fallen hero Morrissey.

Morrissey sucks, and unfortunately, most of his fans do too.
