Mikel Erentxun - to play with Morrissey?
Posted on Mon, Apr 24 2000 at 9:05 a.m. PDT
by David T. <david@morrissey-solo.com>
From Manuel:

This was in today's newspaper EL MUNDO, April 19, concerning Mikel Erentxun's new album.

In the US, Mikel Erentxun is known as the Latin Morrissey. "it's funny", he admits, "people there come to my concerts in Morrissey or The Smiths T-shirts". And that's something that doesn't bother the artist at all, a confessed mythomaniac, particularly about Morrissey (with whom he might play in CA) or Lloyd Cole, who plays in one of his new songs "Te Dejas Ver".

This is all beyond me, really. His covers of The Smiths and Morrissey leave a lot to be desired.

Update (4/25): Link to the interview on the El Mundo site, "La mirada acústica de Mikel Erentxun from Marc Duquet and also María.

I meant the lyrics. The twosome suicidide issue is absolutley ignored in There´s a Light. The same goes for Everyday Is like Sunday. It´s so English like that a translation into Spanish of that one is really dificult to write if you intend to keep the meaning.
In Spain, where I live, Mikel is not very well considered. He was in the late 80´s and early 90´s. Then he became a singer for teenage girls, writing simple love songs. Now...Nobody cares.

This has to be done, especially in So. Cal. where theres alot of Morrissey fans who dig Mikel (Latin Connection). I was hoping Mikel would open for Morrissey in his Irvine and Universal shows but this could be better. My friend Mikey met him (Mikel) and seems to welcome the comparisons to Morrissey and often signs smiths cover with his autograph at sign-ins.

Viva Duncan Dhu!!!!

No one should ever be allowed to cover moz/smiths songs, the effort is invariably atrocious. What is the point if I want to hear everyday is like sunday I want to hear Moz do it. On the same note Moz himself should refrain from the temptation of covering, his version of Thats Entertainment was BAD, he wrecked that song by slowing it down and leaving words out and making it passionless.

One time I walked in a guitar shop and i was wearing a Morrissey shirt and the guy working there just smiled and about a minute later "There Is a light.." came on but in spanish. I thought it sounded pretty good except the fact that i dont speak spanish and had to sing along in english. Anyway I wouldnt mind hearing morrissey do a duet with this guy as long as Morrissey sticks to singing in english because No offense to him but he sounds a little funny when he speaks spanish):-)

There Is A Light has been my favorite song for several years, and I think Mikel's version is very good. I like how he re-interprets it. Everyday is OK too.

I agree with Manuel. Mikel Erentxun has very bad reputation here in Spain, even though his work with Duncan Dhu was not as bad as his fans. His legion of fans were far more like Ricky Martin`s than Morrissey`s. I don`t see it like a good thing, unless it means that Morrissey will play in Spain for once in his life.

You're absolutely right about Mikel Erentxun. Especially the lyrics lose a lot in Spanish.

I agree with Manuel, Luis, Bettina...
I liked some of the early Duncan Dhu stuff, but...
I never saw how Mikel could be compared to Morrissey. They're light years apart from each other.
Morrissey's the star; he's so outstanding, he's got nothing to do with Mikel (does this one's art even have any lasting effect on other people's lives?)

It would be nice to see both Morrissey and Lloyd Cole on the stage together. Both are great performers and would love to head back towards the 80's.. Does anyone else have any other info on this possible collaboration with either Lloyd or Mikel? Like when and where exactly in so.cal? I personally believe there would be more a chance of seeing Lloyd on stage with Moz, being that they are both dear friends of eachother.....-kUrt

María had the point here. I don't Mikel has ever influenced a single person the way Morrissey does. Comparison is most ridiculous. If you understood how simple and vulgar his There`s A Light is you´d change your mind. A Morrissey translation or adaptation into another language calls for respect.

I agree with you Manuel.I have seen Mikel Erentxu
two times here in Portugal, and I must admit that I went to the shows just to hear him singing "There is a Ligtht...", and "Everyday Is Like Sunday".Well it was good. They are Morrissey songs, but of course that is impossible to compare Morrissey with him.Even the ideia to do that make me creeps.

Nothing to do , NOT AT ALL! Mikel with Morrissey
I agree OF COURSe,with the spanish people ..Mikel is a dead as duncan dhu and bad as it can be.

the rumour about them playing together is ridiculous and completely opposite.
The cover version of TIALTNGO is shameful indeed.

I hope he NEVER plays with him ,(why mikel would bother the comparison?he´d love to take that compliment .. or should I say advantage?)

thankyou but no!!!! no comparison between the 2. mixels version of everyday is like sunday is the worse. there is a light isnt so bad i'll the guy that much. but he is still cheesy and lame. frankly, im annoyed at the idea of the 2 playing together. i welcome my dearest morrissey anytime, but ive seen enough wankers open for him. enough of this moz angeles and puro desmadre crap. he needs to get over it, go back to being british, cocky, and lovely.

I am not sure if anyone was aware but not to long ago there was an article on Mikel in the Orange County Register. In the article he states that he would not say that Morrissey is an influence on his music. He says that he does like Morrissey, BUT there are other bands he likes much better. I have heard this guy and I think he is a disgrace to the beautiful music of Morrissey. Where does he get off taking credit for Morrissey's beautiful songs!!???

I have one thing to say in defense of Mikel. One artist is not to be blamed because of his fans. Duncan Dhu were more like The Smiths, but all the imaginery behind them was very "New Kids On The Block" Mikel solo work is poorer than Duncan Dhu`s. Apart from that, I saw one day a program in a spanish music channel in which Mikel presented his favourite videos. He has good taste (Radiohead, R.E.M.) but neither Smiths or Morrissey videos were shown. This seems to confirm the oppinion of Death To Mikel.

For all the Mikel Erentxun Fans: "when what you have to say is no better than the silence the best is to keep your mouth shut" Why cover Smith´s or Morrissey´s songs? Its impossible to make it better than the original, then Why to cover them?

Tasteless, bland, DULL, just some of the words that describe Mikel's music. I find it impossible to believe that Morrissey would lend his talents to such an upstart. And an upstart in many ways Mikel is.

I used to like Mikel's music before until I came across with this article on the newspaper about not giving any credit to Morrissey. That's why I hate him now, because he said that his big influence was by The Beatles and not by Morrissey. So why does he cover Morrissey/Smiths songs??? ...and his music sounds like The Smiths??? C'mon Mikel be original and create your OWN music!!! And if you countinue covering Morrissey's songs, give the MAN (MORRISSEY) some credit and not the stupid Beatles.

Re: the above post. We do not use The Beatles and "stupid" in the same sentence. The Beatles are why we are here. The Beatles inspired Morrissey/Marr whether they'll admit it or not. Liverpool and Manchester are about 50 miles apart. Sorry, but that's just the way it goes............

i totally agree with manuel, maría and luis (luis, are you really from la coruña? is there anybody here listening to morrissey...write me!!!!)

duncan dhu had some nice songs, but comparing him wityh the moz is quite stupid. his covers are barely listeanable, if you are a moz fan. but he had a great hit with "esta luz nunca se apagará", how could anybody says he is not well tasted?

Of course Mikel doesn't mind being compared to Moz. First of all, Moz is goodlooking and Mikel isn't. I may be mistaken, but I think the only reason he has accumulated much fans is because of the one Moz song and Smith song he sings. He only has one or two good songs of his own. Most people know him by the Smiths and Moz song he sings, otherwise he probably wouldn't have much popularity. Morrissey doesn't need a shadow.
