Johnny Marr Adds Kula Shaker Bassist To Lineup
April 5, 2000, 12:10 pm PT

Johnny Marr has snagged Alonza Bevan from the newly-defunct Kula Shaker for bass duties in his band, the Healers. The former Smiths guitarist's debut solo album, Play Dumb, is most likely going to hit record store shelves this fall, but Marr needs to decide on a label first.

With his album in the mixing stages, Marr's been keeping busy by playing on three tracks on the new Bert Jansch album and he also recorded a song with his band for a tribute album to the Scotland-born, British folk/rock singer Jansch, which is expected out this summer. Check back here for more details on both Jansch-related albums.

Johnny Marr's Healers hit the road with Oasis May 30 for a few shows. More U.K. festival dates will be added, and Marr is eyeing a fall tour of the U.S. For now, here's where to catch him: May 30, Milan, Italy, Fila Forum; June 7, Berlin, Germany, Arena; June 9, Nurburgring, German, Rock am Ring; June 11, Nuremberg, Germany, Rock Im Park; and July 15-16, Bolton, U.K., Reebok Stadium (also with Happy Mondays).

Kula Shaker were really awful, I sincerelly hope that Johnny wont let himself be influenced by that kind of music, "Indian" style or something like that

Kula Shaker may or may not be everyones cup of tea but the band can play really well. It is very good to see that Johnny has picked up a truely talented bass player that is multi-dimensional. The album should be very rich, based on the details that have trickled in in recent months. I am glad to see Morrissey and Marr are still going at it as we head into another millenium.

Well, thats another career in tatters then !
I too was looking forward to the Healers album ( God knows why, Electronic should have warned me against it) but now I find out that the once great Mr Marr is yet again wasting his talent by mixing with untalented, Harrison(!) obsessed chancers it is obvious what the result will be like.
At least it shows once and for all that the genius behind the Smiths was Morrissey. Johnny has let us and himself down. I hope I will be proved wrong but I can't imagine I will be!

good god people. kula shaker was an incredibly talented band with a very unique sound. whether one likes them or not, they are talented musicians. i'm sure johnny recognizes that. shouldn't we all be excited that the man who provided the backdrop to many great moz vocals has a new project on the way? oh, i must add that i thought electronic was quite good at times.

No band that produced such dire records as Govinda and The Sound of Drums can possibly be described as "incredibly talented", in fact, unless you know them personally (which I find unlikely unless live up their collective arses, as that is where they seem to spend their time) I don't see where you get the evidence to call them talented. I've certainly never seen any!
In any case, talented or not, my point was that it is yet another example of Johnny Marr wasting his talent on inferior musicians that do not deserve it. And, by the way, Electronic were absolute crap, or do you rate New Order and that tosser from the Pet Shop Boys as incredibly talented as well ?

Boy least likely to,

I guess you can't respect other people's opinions, eh? Well, I can't respect yours either! New Order and the Pet Shop Boys are awesome! (I was even thrilled that Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk co-wrote half the songs on "Raise the Pressure") It's a shame that you think that Marr has wasted his time. I'm glad Marr has done what he has done since post-Smiths b/c i know it pisses off people just like you. I can't wait to hear his new solo record. I can't wait to hear another Electronic album. I love Electronic. At least Marr has explored other musical genres. It may not be original, but it's very much worth listening to. Can't you appreciate the fact that Marr is still making music? But i'm sure i know what your reply would be, "welll, he may still be making music, but it sure sucks. he just needs to give it up." All I can say is that it's your loss for not wanting to listen to Marr.

What the hell do I care about Johnny Marr and his sad little solo record. I need to hear new Morrissey stuff! Enough said...

Steven,

Its not that I want Johnny Marr to give up, its just that I find it so disappointing that he has failed to live up to the high standards he set whilst in the Smiths. I would be as pleased as anyone if the new Healers album is a classic, but I honestly can't imagine it will be. I do value other peoples opinions, but if I think they are wrong, I will say so. Do you have a problem with that?

whatīs the problem with Johnny???????.I think heīs a very talented musician, and I consider it to be extremely unfair not to reconigze him all what he did with MOZZER in the 80īs.I think you are biased against him justīcause he doesnīt want to play with MOZZER anymore. Just try to be honest, Marr is half-responsible of all the beatiful Smiths songs!!!!!!!!VIVA MARR,AND OF COURSE,VIVA MOZZER

Please try to imagine what it must have been like to have to work with a self-obsessed individual like morrissey for years on end. That Jonny Marr can still string a sentence together is a miracle. Marr changes and experiments with new sounds all the time, while Morrissey churns out the same old tired rubbish year after year.
