The Pro-Joyce Campaign

The Smiths' Mike Joyce gears up to write a book of his experiences, but as he categorically states, it won't be called Morrissey And Marr: The Twats

Morrissey once sang, "I bear more grudges than lonely high court judges". You couldn't say the same for ex-Smiths drummer Mike Joyce. He won ƒ1 million in back royalties from Morrissey and Johnny Marr in a court case in 1997, and is now set to write the account of his life as a Smith. Anyone expecting a hatchet job, however, will be disappointed."

I don't hate Morrissey," says Mike down the phone from his Manchester home. "A lot of people think it's going to be called Morrissey And Marr: The Twats, but it won't be a vitriolic rant. I had a great time in The Smiths. You get a very different perspective from behind the drums than being the singer."

While stressing that Johnny Rogan's The Severed Alliance was "95 percent accurate", Mike considers most of the programmes and books about The Smiths to be wrong. Promising much ephemera to interest the fans (he has kept all the Smiths set lists), he adds that he'll also address the deification of Morrissey. "All these lads on stage, hugging him," says Mike dismissively of a post- Smiths show in Wolverhampton in '88, "like he was the Messiah."

So if Morrissey rang up today and asked for a Smiths reunion, how would he react?

"Well, first I'd check it wasn't Jeremy Beadle," laughs the man described by Julian Cope as 'a huge vibe'. "Then I'd agree to do it. Just do one gig in the Bricklayer's Arms. just for a bit of fun." He adds, however, that he didn't go and see Moz playing old Smiths songs on his recent British dates. "I was in The Smiths," says Mike. "I don't rate Morrissey on his own."

Now, with the spirit of contentment that only ƒ1 million can bring, Joyce is involved in a new project. He's got a new band with Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and ex-Roses guitarist Aziz Ibrahim. Called Aziz, the group is recording an LP with a rolling cast of musicians including Paul Weller and Noel Redding, the bassist from The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

"I know people might be put off," ponders Joyce. "It is a bit like a super group. But the music's passionate. It's difficult, but we want to start with a clean slate."

JOHN MULLEN

Additionally, from Torr:

Fans of Mike and Andy or Aziz can watch a webcast of their show (at nme.com) from a couple weeks back.

Good Lord, Mike and Andy look terrible.

And I think it would be soooo funny if Mike's book were called "Morrissey And Marr: The Twats!" LOL!! I'd go with that. :)

Have you seen the state of these two muppets? They look like some crap comedy programmes parody of a white rap band. Have they no dignity?
And yes the book is bound to be fascinating - they even have all the setlists from the Smiths days - riveting stuff.
Mike doesn't rate Morrissey as a solo artist either. Perhaps he makes drum and bass and hard house mix tapes ( cos he's on the streets, keepin in real ) for Andy to listen to while he's in detox in the vein of hope of stopping the veins in his arms collapsing.
Bollocks to the pair of them.

Iain. Your comments about Andy are both amusing and saddening. Ever had a drug problem. Would it shock you to know that all of the members of the Smiths used heroin on a regular basis. Is Mike making drum and bass mix tapes. Well it would be better than re-hashing old Smiths songs in some pathetic @#!!!ing parody of yourself. Wearing a West Ham t-shirt. Flirting with neo-nazi imagery. Stealing from your fellow bandmates. Moving to L.A. and becoming a queen. Lets face it. You want dignity, then ask for Mike or Andy. You want useless, vacuous, superficial, outdated imagery. Go see Morrissey.

Is there any chance of Morrissey going the same way as Freddie Mercury? Please.

That could well be fact because I recall seeing backstage footage from 1984 in Hamburg where Mike and Andy are larking around and Mike clearly pinched Andys bottom. Therefore I'm sure Moz and Johnny got the same treatment but not anymore of course.

-Iain- "Have you seen the state of these two muppets? They look like some crap comedy programmes parody of a white rap band. Have they no dignity?"

Oh Iain! Just because you're in love with Morrissey, you feel the need to insult anyone who crosses him! Grow up! By the way, have you looked in the mirror lately? You're no oil painting yourself!

Are you so stupid that you don't realise that they were trying to "look like some crap comedy programmes parody of a white rap band"?
What about Morrissey trying to look like Elvis? Or wearing fake bruises? Or putting on make-up to look like a 'New York Doll'? Or hanging a banana out of his pants? The picture of Mike, Andy & Aziz, was a humorous snapshot, not some pre-meditated 'career move'.

"And yes the book is bound to be fascinating - they even have all the setlists from the Smiths days - riveting stuff"

Grow up, Iain! You're acting like a spiteful child, rather than a 30-something bloke.

"Mike doesn't rate Morrissey as a solo artist either"

Just because he was in a band with Morrissey, 13 years ago, is it compulsory for him to love his solo work?

"Perhaps he makes drum and bass and hard house mix tapes ( cos he's on the streets, keepin in real ) for Andy to listen to while he's in detox in the vein of hope of stopping the veins in his arms collapsing."

That may be the reason. Although I'd suggest that a more likely reason is because he likes drum & bass & hard house tapes, don't you think? You don't get collapsed veins with extacy abuse, do you, Iain?

"Bollocks to the pair of them"

I dare say that they have a similar feeling towards you!

o.k. someone with a big nose, i'm afraid i'll have to fill you in on some of the people around here.

they think that:
1) morrissey is right, so mike and andy must be wrong. hence despite the fact that they played on practically every smiths track, and to sane ears made smiths music fantastic, they are seen as "useless".
2) johnny marr is also useless although slightly less than the rhythm section, as he didn't take morrissey to court, although he can be blamed for splitting the smiths up (this opinion is optional)

plus added bile and venom

HAHAHA-thats the spirit. I found the comments here the absolute funniest I have read on this site in ages. Sad but true many people who frequent Morrissey shows and web sites forget what the Smiths were-a band. As far as what they(Mike, Andy, Stephen & Johnny) are doing now well that IS another story completely. Mike and Andy do in fact look the worse for wear but that is not to say Morrissey and Marr have been sealed in a time machine either..my fellow lunatics, we all age like it or not.
Supergroup? With that line-up? Shouldnt they have got the back up tambourine player from the Soup Dragons before they gave themselves that clever misguided label? Oh yeah the book, how will he find the time to finish it? Isnt Aziz about to overthrow the world and show us that we have been wasting our time listening to anything else? I would imagine a world tour unlike any other before. Aziz mania has already hit the states like a bug against a windshield. Quick, painless and not very noticeable.
