Boston afterparty at Upstairs Lounge (Feb. 19) still on
Posted on Tue, Feb 15 2000 at 9:48 a.m. PST
by David T. <david@morrissey-solo.com>
From Derek:

Hello everyone. Firstly, please accept my apology for the misinformation given regarding the Morrissey Post Concert Party at The Upstairs Lounge on Saturday, 19 February. It starts at 9P and ends at 2A. Our manager did decide against having the band, though. I'm not sure why, really. But, as the DJ for that night and every Saturday, let me assure you it is STILL very much on. We will be giving away some goodies and the crowd is always very likeable.

E-mail me if you need any further information or grab me outside the Avalon prior to Saturday's show. I'll be handing out info there. Sorry for any inconvenience and much thanks to Josh in Long Island for bringing this to my attention.

I saw the Lads play on Saturday, and I was looking forward to seeing them again in Boston. Add my name to the list of people demanding the Lads!

yes we all want the lads to play! Many people are very disappointed to find that they were cancelled.

I say we all go somewhere else. Let these people know that we are VERY disappointed in them. This place isn't even close to the venue. Let's have a party at a club close by. What do you all say?

Anybody know about anything going on for sunday night after the show?

Yeah, I'm excited for the show. I also heard that that guy Eric Benet is gonna be playing that same night though. He's destined to cut into Moz pie, because he's so much bigger than Moz ever was right now. Anybody have any pictures, stories or memoirs to share about anything dealing with Eric Benet? I heard he's engaged to Halle Berry, that's what I heard. Give me some more Eric Benet info. More, more, more Eric Benet!!!!!

I, for one, was not impressed by the Salford Lads. Anyway, the last thing I'd want to do after a Morrissey show would be to watch a Smiths tribute band. What's the point? I'd rather hang out with fellow concert-goers and Morrissey fans and listen to some good music (Smiths/Moz or otherwise).
So, who's going to be there?

I SAY SCREW THE UPSTAIRS LOUNGE! IT'S NOT WORTH IT TO TREK ACROSS TOWN FOR SOME @#!!!TY GIFT PACK! I THINK WE SHOULD ALL HEAD OVER TO AXIS WHICH IS NEXT DOOR TO AVALON. THEY PLAY 80S MUSIC ON SATURDAYS AND GENERALLY HAVE GOOD CROWDS.

What show were you watching, Lifeguard Posting?! I thought the show on Saturday was fantastic! Why do you have to be so critical - can't you just enjoy hearing the music of the Smiths being played live? Your bitterness is too common a trait held by Morrissey fans, they're never happy with anything...I see no reason to go out of your way to insult this band.

Go Lads! Boycott the UL!

The Lads will not be playing anywhere, but we'll all be in attendance at the Avalon. Hope to see everyone there! Please come up and say hi, we'll be handing out some giveaways and stuff...

- Wed, Feb 16, 2000 at 07:56:23 (PST) | #16

I don't think it's necessary to boycott the UL, I think tons of people are just going to end up at the Axis anyway, if it really is that close to the avalon. I certainly do not want to drive all the way across town, especially since without the band there is no real reason to do so. I'll see everybody at the Axis?

well, guys.,....

i think it's a shame you all want to go to axis(hell on earth, in my opinion) I think it is really important to go to the upstairs lounge and appreciate the fact that gibby, along with others, had put so much effort into throwing a moz/smiths party. axis is HORRIBLE....HORRIBLE, I SAY.....and you can all expect to pay $15 , whereas at the lounge you will only pay $5-7 for a more intimate setting filled with true moz fans, as opposed to axis, where there will be tons of kids from kappa sigma and delta delta delta......

so....the choice of crowd is yours.....

see you at the lounge....

I, for one happen to love Axis. I think it's a great time. Upstairs they play a lot of good 80's music. As for the crowd, it's who you go with....Unfortunately, when I was there a few weeks ago, the downstairs was being renovated so the upstairs was a mix of club and 80's which wasn't all bad, but just not the same. You may want to check and see if the renovation's been completed...

Peter <peter21@bu.edu>
- Wed, Feb 16, 2000 at 10:53:40 (PST) | #22

Well I'm apalled. To think our type of crowd would go to Axis. At least $10 to go (Lounge is $3 with our tix) and Axis' 80s night sucks. Downstairs is okay if you like dance crowds and cheesy guys looking for a girl or a fight. I'm with Leura...as well as many others from what I hear around town. On a side note....I wouldn't put too much stock in what Gibby says. He tends to distort things a bit.

1. lads suck. saw them three times (involuntarily).

3. lounge rocks.

While you guys are crying about the Salford Lads and where to hang out, I'm hosting an Eric Benet party at my estate. Eric Benet is by far a better singer than Morrissey and he's engaged to Halle Barry. Did you guys know that? Excuse me, I need to go tap another keg of Colt 45. It does it every time you know. My lady is almost as fine as Halle too you know. Hey Philip, come on over, the party is kickin' and there is champagne for everybody!!!! Whhooooo, let the right one slip in y'all, as long as it's all mine!!!!

I had nothing to do with the morrissey after party other than bringing in the lads... Now that i have been asked to withdraw, im going elsewhere. With respect to derek, my experience with the Lounge is that it tends to be less than crowded every night but friday britpop nights...

Axis has an 80's night every saturday, and the plus for out of towners is that it IS RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO AVALON.

Also -- Man Ray (www.manrayclub.com) in cambridge, just across the bridge from kenmore has a great new wave night as well... both of these are fairly close.

Theres a new mod night sundays at "an tua nua" near kenmore square right near Avalon that is having a Moz night on sunday night, which might be fun after the 20th show...

i will of course be hosting after-AFTER parties at my house... find me- Im the boy with the swallow on my neck and viva hate on my knuckles.

I'm down for some Champagne. I can bring some crushed ice and my new Eric Benet snow shoes. Did you know that you can also get Eric Benet glasses at McDonald's when you buy a Chicken Nuggets and Fry combo meal? Moz never had it that good! His fame is fading fast. It's time for a mainstream crossover hit! Moz needs to take some advice from his friend Eric Benet. But then I hope he doesn't take the words to "We hate it when our friends become successful" to heart. This Benet guy Rocks!! We should really put a link to his site somewhere on this site since there's so many of Moz's fans are gravitating to Eric Benet. Wouldn't that be cool you guys?

If I'm not mistaken, the Morrissey Birthday party was at the Upstairs Lounge on a Saturday, and it was PACKED. I'm sure an after-party crowd will produce an equally big turn-out on the 19th, as well.

But now I'm confused. Where shall I go? Shall I stick with the original plan and go to the Upstairs Lounge? (Derek's a cool DJ). Do I go to the glitzy Axis? Do I high-tail it to Cambridge?? Where's everyone going to be?

Gibby, where are YOU going to be?

It's great to see open-mindedness and individuality still works for some people in this world. I speak of the people on this list whose comments have been posted and those of you I've spoken to directly. Hats off to Gibby for setting the record a bit more clear and offering a solution to those who don't wish to join us at The Lounge. Those of you who are still coming: I'll see you there! Those who aren't: You'll be missed, but we must all do what we want to do. I hope our visitors to Boston find their way around easily enough and enjoy our great city. Thanks for the compliment, Lifeguard.

Dilemma, Dilemma.

Option 1) Axis. $10 cover, Frat a**holes and bad tunes.

Option 2) Manray $10 cover, Really over priced drinks and crappy service to boot. Closes at 1AM

Option 3) The Lounge. Moz crowd, cheap cover, apparently a cool DJ (seems like it to me) and just as far from Avalon as Manray. See you guys there!

i'm just quite confused why everyone is making a big deal of the whole dilema and is bashing the salford lads. i've spoken with one of the members last time they played in boston and they were indeed very nice. the music is good and they try very hard. why must people post messages and talk @#!!!? especially when its about nice cute boys like the lads, they are very harmless, just trying to have fun. as for the afterparty, its clearly the better choice for the upstairs lounge lads or not.

As a friend one of the Lads, I can tell you that they've only played Boston once. For you to have seen them two other times, means that you were in NYC. Obviously you were not there involuntarily if you saw them in NYC. Twice.

Just come off it, you feel like being difficult.

After thinking about it some (and getting over my steam about the lads getting the shove) I must say that the Upstairs would definately be the most intimate setting for the moz crew afterwards... Axis will be packed with eurotrash and man ray is mad expensive... Everyone will know everyone else at the lounge, and it would be a shame not to support the ONLY NIGHT IN TOWN offering up a moz and smiths tribute the night of.

SEE YOU AT THE UPSTAIRS LOUNGE!

(From avalon, take the kenmore square green line INBOUND to North Station. Cross the street and its above the PENALTY BOX sports bar)

Do you feel like a community leader, Gibby? :) Actually I'm glad it's settled, I'm sure everyone is. Solidarity is a very good thing. There aren't enough of us Moz fans that we can afford to be split down the middle and hang out at two different places!
PS what is this Eric Benet thing, some sort of elaborate prank? No, I take back my question, let's please stop talking about it, it's very annoying. If I meet someone at the afterparty that introduces himself to me as Eric Benet, I might strangle him.

Almost everyone who posted above reeks of sheep-dom. Open your eyes people.
Gibby the former white-power wannabe turned Mr. Hip (although he resembles every other trite greaser in town)leads you all around directing you on how to be cool, and where to go...and it's all because he has got "ink" which he'll regret in a year when Morrissey isn't trendy anymore. Where were you in '91 Gibby? Listening to talentless "musicians" spout off about hate? Or listening to Morrissey?
Give it up. Your story's old.

Either I @#!!!ed your girlfriend, or beat you up once... or maybe your jealous because I have friends --- Im still trying to figure this one out.

But, just like before, Ill say it again. What have YOU done around here for Moz ? Have you set up record release parties, birthday parties, anything? You sit around on your jealous ass and bitch at me from behind a @#!!!ing alias! So I say, email me and ill give you my phone number, we can meet anywhere you like... Or, if you prefer, just say hello at the show or at the UL afterwards... Im the kid with FRIENDS around me, with all the "ink"... you're so clueless....

and i feel really @#!!!ing lame for posting twice, but i cant help being angry with this @#!!!ing kid....

Okay --- people listen to me because I have tattoos?! What the HELL are you talking about?! The whole "white power" skinhead thing is hilarious, too... yeah i was a skinhead for like 5 years and in highschool was a scared little insecure boy who had some issues and i ran around spouting off crap which i had very little understanding or belief in. This was when I was 16 or 17 years old...

I am 22 now. I get my tattoos for myself, not to impress anyone, and as far as where i was in 91? I was probably in St Louis where I grew up, busy being 12 years old.

The first time I heard the Smiths was at a summer camp when my English councelor lip-synched to ASK during councelor talent night. Every since then I've been into morrissey, whether or not I was listening to skrewdriver on the side or not you idiot... That was when I was very young... so I ask you please to introduce yourself to me, and I gaurantee you're someone that I have NEVER spoken to before...

you're probably another @#!!!ing Allston modnight hipster who sits against the wall and wonders what on earth he's done wrong... I'd love to break your face. Please come find me. Love gibby.

"Someone who knows" what is your problem? If you are so against Gibby's past and all that it was about than why do you know so much? Are you jealous that Gibby was actually into music years ago, no matter what the politics were. You sound like a guy with no heart, who has no passion about music and is just jealous that no one looks at him as the end-all-be-all in the Boston Moz scene! You are a punk and I will be looking for you. Peace.
