Moz stuns Metro! "Ouija", "Hated", "Boxers"
Posted on Sun, Feb 13 2000 at 10:37 a.m. PST
by David T. <david@morrissey-solo.com>
From Ben L. via the tour page, Chicago Metro (Feb. 12):

Anyway, a truly special night in Morrissey history. Here are a few highlights:

Drum kit rearranged from saying "Morrissey" to "Semi Sorry". The first hint that the night was going to be a special show. Very intimate setting of only 1100 fans.

Operation drum intro not played...rather Morrissey walks out on stage with a guitar strapped on (!) and Alain takes the mic. Alain announced each member of the band finishing with "Morrissey on guitar!" They promptly switched roles and Morrissey took over as the and launched into "Swallow" as the first song.

The second track....drum roll......"Ouija Board, Ouija Board"!!! Needless to say the place went crazy.

Other highlights include an outstanding version of "I Am Hated For Loving" as well as a semi acoustic version of "Boxers" with Spike Smith on bongos! ...

Last night's show simply wiped out the pain of the famous "flu" show a couple of years ago (I actually ripped up my ticket at the end of that show). Anyway, everyone who was fortunate enough to be at Metro last night witnessed a magical show.....from the comical beginning (Morrissey sports a guitar), to the terrific ending (Shoplifters unite...) How special were we to hear Ouija Board.....a song he claimed had never been played live?!?!?! Thank you Steven.....Thank you!

The concert...

Are there even words to describe it?
Was the almost 24 hours waiting in line for it worth it? You can bet your button on it.

That night was the most spectacular night in my life. From meeting a whole new barrage of fellow mozzers, to actually being touched by the great and holy MORRISSEY 4 times.

His set list was brilliant, he was brilliant. I am still held agape in awe form last night.

Let's just hope this warm reception given by chicago somehow impacts him into returning in the near future.

Last night i drempt that somebody loved me....

The show was fantastic...unfortunately a woman was trampled during the rush for the first shirt...a sobering event to mar an otherwise intoxicating performance...

20x better than the Chicago Theatre show!

We are the luckiest fans on the tour.

WoaW!
Seems like our prayers have been heard.. about the change of the setlist. :-)
And seems like Morrissey is in a good mood.
lucky lucky lucky guys, congratulations to all!

I have one question , please somebody tell me do you really have to wait/sleep on line 24 hours to get a front seat?
Do I need to be prepared for NY?

a desperate one

Wow, sounds like an AMAZING show! I just hope dear, sweet Morrissey has some similar ideas up his Gucci sleeve for the Boston/NYC shows!

No one mentioned what I thought made the Chicago shows so great... Morrissey was so chatty and playful with the crowd, much more than he has ever been in all the shows that I have seen him perform.

"do you know who you look like?"

I can only say that last night was AMAZING!!! Chicago seems to have lost the Morrissey "curse" and its about time!!! No signs of Chicago flu last night...he was perfectly healthy, as demonstrated when that shirt came off : )

It was in no way an "ordinary" show...truly truly a very special performance, just as it said on the ticket...

Last night I stood with only a two foot barrier between myself and greatness...such an event will probably never happen again...Thank god...er...thank MOZ I was a part of it!!!

Oh, and ladies and gentlemen...that was MY Elvis candy he rubbed all over himself...THIS HEART IS FULL...

Thank you Morrissey...ILL ALWAYS STAY TRUE TO YOU

I bet all of this instrument swapping was all Spike's idea. I knew he was up no good, Can't trust a new drummer. We have another Mike Joyce on our hands!!! Way to go Spike, what next??? Morrissey + Violin Alain Whyte + Harp Boz Boorer + Turntable Spike Lee + Lead Vocals. I can see your plan to take over Morrissey's spot light from a hundred miles away, and I won't have any of it.

I saw Morrissey at the Chicago Theatre. I found all of his self-pitying comments to be nauseating. I am not sure what the quote, "Johnny Marr was Steven Speilbergs first choice to play E.T." was all about. I have been a Morrissey fan for 15 years, but I have to say his singing is great, but his comments are way old...

OH MY GOD!!!!
HE PLAYED OUIJA BOARD!!! HE PLAYED OUIJA BOARD!!!
AN ACTUAL SONG FROM MY DREAM SETLIST
HE PLAYED OUIJA BOARD!!! I CAN'T BELEIVE IT!!!
I WISH I WAS THERE!!! I WISH I WAS THERE!!!
I HAVE SEEN HIM 9 TIMES ON THIS TOUR AND ALL I
GOT WERE THE SAME DAMN SONGS!!! IT MUST HAVE
BEEN AS INCREDIBLE AS WHEN HE PLAYED THE QUEEN
IS DEAD AT THE CLAREMONT SHOW IN 97. I REMEMBER
WALKING AROUND FOR WEEKS IN DENIAL AFTER SEEING
THAT SHOW. HOPE HE PLAYS OUIJA BOARD IN LA. IF
HE DOSN'T I'LL PROBABLY END UP RIPPING UP MY
CONCERT TICKET. CHICAGO YOU ARE LUCKY BASTARDS.
MORRISSEY HAS TREATED YOU WELL AND I AM GLAD
BECAUSE YOU DESERVE IT AFTER BEING AVOIDED ON THE
OTHER LEGS OF THE TOUR. HOPEFULLY HE TREATS THE REST OF THE EAST COAST JUST AS WELL. DON'T BE
JEALOUS OF ALL THE RECENT CALIFORNIA SHOWS. THEY JUST WERE NOT THAT GREAT. ARIZONA WAS A VERY GOOD
SHOW THOUGH, GLAD I DIDN'T MISS THAT ONE. MY GOD
HE PLAYED OUIJA BOARD!!!

The show last night was unbelievable, a dream show to say the least. I came so close to touching his hand. I think if I had something to give he would've reached out. He seemed to take everything from people. Seeing him so close and being there with everyone singing and smiling made my millenium. Great to see the band up close too. Brilliant, just brilliant. A night that will go down in Metro history. Going there will never be the same again.

The set-list is just getting better. Who would've thought there would be five Smiths songs in a Morrissey set. I also recall being told that 'I Am Hated For Loving' was sound-checked in Galway. It was only a matter of time. Bootlegs of these recent gigs should be like gold-dust. Hopefully Moz will bring this fantastic set-list to Irish shores once again. COME HOME MOZ, COME HOME!!

The Metro show should definitely be a milestone in Morrissey lore, as in "Oh, yeah, but did you see him at the Metro back in 2000? Now that was a show!"

Still, the Chicago Theater, no doubt a pretty great show, had one indisuputably brilliant moment: The sailor suit! Has this been part of every show? If not, then this was indeed even more incredible. If anyone managed to get a picture of this, let me know. I'm willing to pay!

I just saw him perform last night at the State Theatre in Detroit and the set list was AMAZING. Five smiths songs including "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me", "Meat Is Murder", "Is It Really So Strange", "Half A Person" and "Shoplifters of The World Unite". Also, is it just me or did he play three or four brand new songs. There were a few in there i have never heard before and they were amazing.

The show started off on a strange note when someone in the audience threw beer on stage all over morrissey and Morrissey said, "I never do feel welcome until i get beer thrown all over me. And that goes for wherever i am, at the supermarket....or church." It was funny. He then told the audience that if you were standing next to the boy or girl who threw the beer, that you should throw something on them. I just found it wonderful. Ok...bye.

I THOUGHT MORRISSEY WAS GOOD AT THE CHICAGO STATE THEATRE FOR MY FIRST EVER MORRISSEY CONCERT BUT THE METRO WAS FANTASTIC. MORRISSEY PLAYED AND EQUALLY GREAT SHOW IN DETROIT. I ONLY HOPE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT YET SEEN HIS CONCERT,THAT IT WILL BE AS GREAT AS THE METRO AND DETROIT STATE THEATRE SHOWS.

Anyone who may have a recording of the wonderful Chicago Metro show, please get in touch! I have an excellent recording of the show two days prior at the Chicago Theatre. Anyone interesting in obtaining a copy, email me (subject line: Morrissey CD.) To all those who suffered the cold Saturday evening, wasn't it worth it? To those who saw fit to skate atop the crowd, and plant their feet in others' faces, sorrow will come to you, in the end!

My goodness, my goodness! What can I say there's no words! I'm overwhelmed with joy. Waiting 13hours for our dear moz at the Metro.
That day was too perfect! He recieved our gifts pleasantly like the Elvis glasses that he loved to pose in, the chocolate heart with Elvis on the front that he kissed and rubbed on his body, the t-shirt that said "the moz" which he grabbed and placed on his chest and rubbed as well. My poster that said "TE QUIERO MI AMOR" and he replied "Oh you shouldn't have that's so sweet"
Everyone was enjoying themselves it was like a dream!! We chanted "Here we go" it echoed threw the Metro non stop!! We were screaming like crazy people(which we are but only for MOZ)it was truly an unforgetable night!!!! I wish for you to equally experience a night like that!!:^)

The show seems like it was great but what is with the Johnny Marr comment? Morrissey needs to learn to forgive and forget! Marr alone is worth ten of his current backing band!

The Metro show in Chicago was beyond incredible...he was in good form, and his voice was awesome as usual.. The only down sides were the stomping of humans for t-shirts and the disruptive heckler during the pre-show.. He seemd to have a some anger-induced variation of Tourette's..
But, Morrissey was worth every second of standing in the frigid Chicago weather..our toes thawed out just in time for the show... :)

If you thought the Moz show rocked, you should check out this new guy named Eric Benet!!! he's got a moz type style in an R&B kind of way but he's hot now, not a thing of the past in many ways like Moz, although I love Moz and always will. This Eric Benet guy is definitely replacing a lot of the 80s glam rock guys like Moz. He's next. Anybody got any info on the Lads?

Ah, what a show. I hung off in the back and enjoyed some beers while Verbow were playing, who were decent the second time. I went to the can and started mumbling the words to half a person and then before I knew it half the men's room was singing "Sixteen, Clumbsy and Shy"

The the legend walks out. The furtherest you could be from him was 20 yards. There were a bunch of people who thought the last thing he released was "Boxers" but I set them straight.

Morrissey wasn't talkative but he called us his children. Very cool. Somehow the end of "ouija" got screwed up but nobody cared. No "Boy Racer" which could have replaced "Teachers" but I digress. A great show. Great fans. Met Alain and Boz after the show. Very laid back and didn't mind saying "hi" to a wasted obnoxious fan.

Afterwards, many met at the Gingerman bar. Talked over the show and wished there was at least one more at the Metro. Viva the Metro!
