Detroit 'culture' rag on today's show

Metro Times link from Dan Klyn:

Focault y'all

Morrissey's last solo effort was a commercial meltdown, with U.S. fans and critics seemingly unaware of its very existence. So there may be a little pressure on this U.S. tour to make up for a serious memory gap going all the way back to "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get," the nominal "hit" from 1994's Vauxhall & I. But, though it may be a bit hard to find, the aforementioned latest recording, Maladjusted might be a great place to reacquaint yourself with Moz. Easily his most regal and overtly political album to date, the 1997 record was a strong thematic synthesis of the Mozzer character sketch: The ambivalent-yet-romantic outsider poking at the tired moralist fascism of England, a country which eats its young and kills the innocence of youth in favor of imprinting its version of the real man / woman onto the consciousness of the population. Or, for you academic types: Michel Foucault meets Oscar Wilde in postwar England for a bitter (yet platonic) homosexual experience-- plus guitars. Clearly stated, moving, fun, funny and, it goes without saying, over the top, Maladjusted saw the Sinatra of our generation call his listeners back to the edge of the stage for one more swooning gasp at an alienation as deliberate and beautiful as it perhaps has ever been. If he decides to show up this Sunday, the pleasure and the privilege will surely be ours. Morrissey plays the State Theater (2115 Woodward Ave., Detroit) this Sunday. "If he decides to show up...."?
When will people stop beating a dead horse?

The concert at the "State" (in Detroit) was perhaps the best concert that I have ever seen. Despite all the crap that Moz had to put up with,(ie. beer in the face, and crazed fans trying to pull him into the crowd) he was still in good spirits, and put on a memerable show.
As for the lack of hospitality from the Detroit fans - I am glad to say, "I AM NOT AN AMERICAN"

beer in the Moz's face... that is extremely disrespectful, i guess he didn't just leave because i'm willing to bet it was probably his favorite beer: CORONA

sue it has nothing to do with being an "american", it is about not being a total moron. Unfortunately the entire world has their share of them.

I would agree with Carleton's comments about 'Malajusted'.

Morrissey has never gone out of his way to court favour with the record buying public. You go to the music or you leave it. It certainly doesn't come to you on a daily basis. Steven is not the male Britney Spears who's is played on radio every five minutes of the day, much to the chagrin of his former record company bosses, and perhaps this explains why he thankfully has no record contract at the moment. He has always maintained a very high artistic integrity despite of corporatate interference. May he never be owned by a record company.

'Malajusted' is a masterpiece of understatement, subtlety, and unforced nuance. It was poorly reviewed by lazy music reviewers and critics, and a lot of people seem to believe what they read in the music press and wider media. It doesn't deliver the goodies straight away, it's a grower that demands your complete attention. And as we all know, music journalists have a very short attention span indeed. Too busy concentrating on the NEXT BEST THING!

'Roy's Keen' is probably one of the cleverest songs Moz has ever written (only Morrissey could write an enchanting song about a humble window cleaner)and make it equally humourous at the same time. It's vaguely commerical and I don't know why it wasn't chosen as the first single off the album instead of the mediocre 'Alma Matters'.

Equally, 'Papa Jack' is a highly poignant but nasty sidswipe at his ole man; both touching and bitter at the same time and well worth a listen

'Malajusted' the song is indulgent in its introduction, but quite breath taking in its intensity and setting (about a pair of ne'er do wells out on the prowl casing places to burgle on a Friday evening!) It's just short of majestic.

Although Viva Hate is my favourite album, Malajusted comes a very close second. No album is a testament to Steven's genius and song writing ability than this one. Forget the lame reviews and the poor sales. They say absolutely nothing about this work.

Remember, the people who gave 'Malajusted' two ** or also the people who gave Britney 5 ***** for her debut album!

Forget the music press, and other phonee Moz fans, get/steal/buy/borrow a copy of 'Malajusted.' I believe it is a truly exceptional record.

In years to come it will be considered a 'classic' album of the 90's

Very intelligent commentary Jake! I agree with you on Maladjusted. But I wonder about what the songs are actually about. For instance, I thought from the start that Maladjusted was about a prostitute! It has those undertones. Also, I've often though(and this applies to all his albums) that he sings more about others and the human condition than himself, or at least he has some experience that prompted him to write a song but maybe about someone else who experienced the same thing - Southpaw is a perfect example of that. By the way, I seem to be in the minority when it comes to favorite Morrissey albums. I loved Maladjusted & Southpaw because, to paraphrase our beloved Moz, "It says something to me about my life!" Thanks for your thoughts Jake.
