Morrissey seen at the Gene show
Posted on Sat, Jun 3 2000 at 10:28 a.m. PDT

From BlueGirl:

I heard this morning that Morrissey made an appearance at the Gene show at LA's Troubador last night. The show was being taped for a live web broadcast. (It can be viewed now at www.onlineconcerts.com.)

My other friend at the show confirmed his presence as well as Alain and his girlfriend! The new songs sound lovely on the webcast, too...

Gene?never in all my life have i heard a worse impression of the smiths(and that IS all they are)Its one thing to like something coz its great, its another thing altogether to like something because it reminds you of something great

does it matter?
LONDON - Sat, Jun 03, 2000 at 15:36:49 (PDT) | #3

here is london, stating his profound philosophy- and i agree. But, this brings us to an interesting juncture. Was moz trying to recapture a memory of greatness by going to the Gene show. Was he reminding himself of something great?

The shows were very good! THe Smiths and Gene are not alike in any way! It is only you readers of stupid journalist reports that only know how to judge from what you read! GO to a Gene show and find out. They sound nothing like Morrissey or the Smiths. Gene are the best!

Gene is great!

i agree with what you say

Perhaps the Gene detractors could be *specific* as to why they believe Gene sound like The Smiths? What, the lyrics? Morrissey has a monopoly on subjects like lonliness and rejection, etc., etc.? The *music* sounds nothing like Moz. The vocals sound nothing like Moz. I think that's obvious - but, hey, you tell me?

Gene, is no Smiths, but a very modest band. I see no comparison with the Smiths, but it's nice to hear that MORRISSEY, is here in enjoying himself and relaxing.

Think it's great,
I, too, felt some scepsis towards Gene in the beginning but their first album is incredible!
They are some similarities with Moz but ... so what? I saw them play in Brussels for maybe 150 people and they were brilliant.
And Moz once said in Q magazine that he didn't really knew them but liked some of their tunes AND that he (thé man, not some @#!!!in' journalist) thought they had their own style and he didn't really recognize The Smiths in it. Voila!
'London, can you wait' is a class song and I'm sure any Moz/smiths fan will love it (if they listen to it)

Cheers

Man, what the hell are u people talking about? Have u actually listened to GENE?? Yes they may be influenced by the Smiths (which is a good thing) but they do NOT try to sound like them , and people who say Martin sounds like moz are just plain stupid.
And what do u think they mean when people say that the Smiths are one of the most influential bands? they mean that the Smtihs have influenced people!!
Gene is a good band that shouldnt be insulted for their influences....

GENE has a great sound and a great vibe. Just like The Smiths. But they are two great, different, bands.
I am glad Morrissey supports them.
Who knows Moz might need an opening band and GENE just might be IT!!!!!!!

These tiresome Smiths comparisons are starting to really bore me. Any British band that are even slightly melodic, with intelligent lyrics, and a certain sense of style will always invariably be compared to them, regardless of the situation. Gene stand alone and are incredible in their own right...they have no desire of being another Smiths, but if any band has the distinction of being heir to the legacy, this is the band! Enough said.

Gene is a great band. Detractors, listen to an album or two then see them live. You might be surprised at what you'll find.

The music on the first album was a little Smith-ish, but I always thought that for the most part, the Smiths comparisons were just the product of lazy journalism. Anyone who writes lyrics in complete sentences is automatically labelled a would-be Moz. I think Gene's second album was genius... and not at all Smiths-like.

First off, it was lovely to see Morrissey at the Gene show, and even more wonderful that he didn't run away halfway through. He stayed around for about an hour at the afterparty, sitting back on a couch, drinking a beer. The nicest part of the evening was that the Morrissey fans didn't pester him too much (until he left, when he was mobbed). Most exchanged a few words, snapped a picture or two, and quietly walked away. Secondly, Gene are playing on the east coast. Two shows are scheduled: July 10th and July 11th at the Mercury Lounge in NYC, although it's anticipated that at least one of the shows will be upgraded to the larger Bowery Ballroom.

I went out to watch the webcast, and was pleasantly surprised to read the following announcement: "Due to the unprecedented popularity of the live netcast on June 2nd, the Gene concert will be available for viewing on this site for two weeks from June 3rd 2000"

Nevermind Gene, I just want more confirmation on this. How many people saw Morrissey there? Was he just in the crowd on was he in the VIP box? What's this about an afterparty? Scott, how do you know so much? if you're a big Morrissey fan and you were ( what sounds like a few feet )away from him for that long of a time, weren't you just DYING? Please, please, please let me get the information I want!

Basil

I was there. I saw Morrissey at the Gene show with my own myopic eyes. When He came in the door, the buzz about His presence spread like wildfire. I was on the opposite end of the room when he entered. By the time I got a look, He was ascending the stairs. Then He appeared in the Loft's window. It seemed like the entire house turned to look up at the window then, and they cheered loudly when He stood there and acknowledged us. Camera flashes went off, illuminating Morrissey in the window.

Talk about Olympian! You can imagine how chuffed Martin Rossiter was that night. It was quite surreal, kind of like when Morrissey came out onstage at the first show of the Oye Esteban tour and the first thing he said was, "We are the Sweet and Tender Hooligans!" And right before I heard Morrissey had arrived, I had just been chatting about duh Man with another Gene fan.

Morrissey stayed up in the VIP Loft. Security was especially tight for that night; they wouldn't even let up people with VIP Loft passes until after Morrissey left. Scott was able to get up there 'cos he plays Scrabble! ; )

The Friday show was fabulous, the best of the three nights at the Troubadour. It was filmed for a live webcast and upcoming dvd. The webcast is still available on a site linked to Gene's official website

http://www.genenet.co.uk

Gene also got dropped from their major record label just like Morrissey did when Polygram merged. So Gene went back to d.i.y. They now have their own independent label called Contra. No jokes about Contrabands, please. And even without major label backing, the fans were still there and the demand for their shows exceeded all expectations. Sound familiar? Hopefully El Mozzer has taken note that he doesn't need a deal with a major record label to have a successful release.

Mel: I confess that I cannot understand why Morrissey does not have his independent label, specially when the big ones are worried about made-up bands that could cause large phenomena of popularity (what's not his case, FORTUNATELY).
I also heard somewhere (here?) that he might be interested in releasing throught the internet, but I cannot remember if he said that in an interview or that was just another rumour.
In any case, I think that releasing through the internet has positive and negative aspects: while the record companies would not retain most of the money, and therefore they could not inflate the prices of CDs (I read a very good article in cnet.com about that), what would make cheaper CDs and richer artists - at the same time - one must have a sort of blind faith in the virtual community to make sure that all people interested in purchasing the songs would hear about the release. In future it will happen, almost for sure, but is the internet now prepared for that?

Basil, it is all true. he stayed in the VIP section for the entire show, and for a long while after. YES, morrissey was really there! i sat one person away from him on the couch watching him sip coronas. it was hard not being an adoring fan, but i was there to be a Gene fan, so i put moz on the back burner for a bit.
i wrote a bit more about it in my "dear diary" section of morrisseytour.com. look for a photo of moz and martin soon!!

Hi Basil,

Yes, I must admit that I was completely dying, sitting across the table from Morrissey, but I used all of my self-control to "play it cool". I've heard that Morrissey rarely attends these afterparties, so I didn't want to come across as a rabid fan and scare him away. We made eye contact a few times, and spoke briefly two or three times. One of these exchanges involved Morrissey looking across the table, seeing our smiling faces and remarking "I see familiar faces". I was somewhat dumbfounded by that - I've been to a large number of shows, and I know that I was recognised in the crowd, but for Morrissey to still recognise me three months later was very cool (or very embarrassing - I can't decide which). I spent most of my time speaking with Martin, the lovely Alain, and Alain's girlfriend, who is very sweet, as well.
