Album / Labels / Roxy photo talk

Thanks to Buddy for the following:

I was speaking with a friend of Boz and Alain from the band. And he asked Alain about any new material for a new album. Alain came down to L.A. and they were laying down tracks for a new album and seeking out labels. Alain even said that the songs they have been working on are a lot better than the last few albums.

He also told him how on Morrissey's birthday, he and Morrissey were driving around L.A. and drove by the Roxy during the 40th birthday party. Well, they pulled over in front of the place and Alain took a picture of Morrissey underneath the sign stating that it was Morrissey's birthday. Just thought that was kinda funny since everyone inside were all hoping Morrissey would show up and he was right outside.

[update 6/29] - From D:

Hello Everyone,

I met Alain at a record store in Melrose today... let me say he was a humble and gracious man.. and I asked him about the album and the Roxy night. Alain told me that Moz and him had "stuff" written down and were just waiting for "the man" to decide to go into the studio. Alain also confirmed what happened at the Roxy party, he had a guilty smirk while talking about it. Alain seemed startled that someone recognized him, especially me, I looked all hip hopped out =)!

Morrissey song in Guinness ad

From Alexi:

Well it seems that the good people at Guinness, the worlds greatest beer, have decided to use one of Morrissey's songs for their new ad (Guinness Extra Cold). I don't know if the ad is available in America, but it's been playing on MTV in the UK fairly regularly. I won't tell u which song though... that would be too easy!!! You'll have to see/hear it for yourself. Yet another Morrissey collectable...

The spoiler version, from I.Terry:

Saw a new Guinness advert on TV last night - two guys go into a bar, order a couple of pints etc. 1 guy goes to sit on a stool, which a girl moves just as he sits down, so he ends up wearing his drink. Anyway, the music accompanying the ad sounds uncannily like "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" from a certain fella's Your Arsenal album. Has Moz decided to endorse Ireland's finest tipple?

[update 6/29] - From Scotie:

Hi! just to let you know I am a film editor and a life long Smiths/Moz fan and that I edited that ad! The music is by an unsigned band called Magnum 500 and the track is called "Talking Pipes".

David Bret's new book on George Formby

From Jamie Collings:

Morrissey spot (June 13) in the Mail on Sunday 'Review' section, in a piece promoting David Bret's new book on George Formby. (Apparently he was a morphine addict and womanising adulterer, yes we're talking about the buck tooth ukulele player) it mentions Morrissey a few times. First extract: 'Bret's writing is not universally treasured by the academic elite, and he has been attacked by relatives and friends of previous subjects. His book on the rock singer Morrissey had him nominated as bastard of the year by a music paper. Such disharmony, however is likely to be as nothing to the reception of his most recent book, published later this month.'

Later on it also names a Morrissey as a fan of  George Formby.

Elvis Costello calls Morrissey 'typically British' (1991)

From Jason Fortner:

It's from 'The Elvis Costello Home Page.'

Interview with Elvis Costello
Vox, 1991-07-01
- Geert Hendricks

"While we're on the subject, I can only name one or two pop musicians [who are] typically British. Ray Davies, of course, Morrissey without any shadow of a doubt and, to a certain [extent], also Pete Townsend, and not forgetting Paul McCartney. There are also a number of singers with a genuine English accent such as Johnny Lydon and Ian Dury. As for me, I am not only of Anglo-Irish extraction, but have liked American music from way back."

From the context of the statement, it sounds like a compliment to me...
