Last leg of the tour begins today in San Francisco
Posted on Fri, Dec 10 1999 at 8:34 a.m. PST
by David T. <david@morrissey-solo.com>
Thanks again to all of those who have contributed information and photos along the way -- I have not been able to keep up with all of it, mostly due to the overwhelming amount of news that has accompanied this tour. Once the tour is over things will settle down (hopefully) and I'll have some time to compile everything together.

Here's an ad for the final leg of the tour which appeared in the L.A. Weekly (Dec. 3-9), pointed out by Moz Head 2000:

I think that the "last leg" of the tour should be amputated and Morrissey should get on with signing with a label and recording new material.

Hey there Matthew M...
The hollywood Palladium seats about 4000, give or take...The House of Blues is about 2000, The ventura theatre about 1000-1500, the Maritime Hall in San Fran 1800-2000 and Cox Arena about 14,000...The Show at Cox is the only one that won't sell out!

such tiny venues the mozzer is playing...

makes for a more intimate show, undoubtedly, but i think he could book larger venues if he had better promotion all-around...

ta raas with promotion! this way only the more astute and deserving make it in the door, instead of a stadium filled with half-interested drunks..

Why is there so much hostility in this room? Aren't we Moz fans supposed to stick together? I'm appauled at this overwhelming sense of unmozness! :( Pull yourselves together! If not for yourselves, do it for our Morrissey!

see you kids in san diego..VIVA MORRISSEY!

Why would we want Morrissey to play larger venues? To destroy the energy and intimacy? He's been there and done that with the best of them. If you want large, boring shows . . . go see the types of acts (without disparaging anyone in particular) who get a false sense of security from playing to "faceless" crowds.

I live in Vegas and cannot wait till Sunday (dec.19) for the concert. I was very disappointed when he canceled last time. The security guards had said it was a neck seizure or spasm. Anyways no ambulance had arrived but I noticed there were some guys with paramedic backpaks trying to be discreet. A lot of people were crying afterward, especially those who had flown in from outside Vegas. There was this girl there too with a big tatoo on her back with the image of Morrissey. Anyways I cant wait till Sunday for the concert. It is going to be the first Morrissey Concert I attend.

I'm so excited. I'm going to the Las Vegas show all by myself. If any one would like to meet me, I'll be wearing a "Kill Uncle" t-shirt or one of the shirts that the venue is selling with black Doc Martians', blue jeans, (possibly a trench coat depending on the weather), and of course my hair combed like Morrissey in 1987. I will find charm in meeting any of you.

The show last night was stirring; I never thought I would see Morrissey in such a small venue. I don't know who posted that the Maritime can hold 1500-2000, it's more like 700. The sound was a bit off, and Morrissey was not pleased about the venue at all. Several times he mentioned that it wasn't good for much and that "next time we'll select a better one".

I did not hear any new songs, although he played a couple of nice ones off of Viva Hate. He did Meat is Murder with an encore of Last Night I Dreamt...

I told one of the venue's workers that I felt the poor quality of sound was inappropriate for a show of this magnitude, and he said that someone in Morrissey's camp didn't want to use the Maritime PA; they apparently insisted on using their own. The poor sound could likely be attributed to a soundman using a sound system that he was wholly unfamiliar with. Despite a fairly high level of treble and occasional feedback, I found the show to be quite stirring. Moz spent a good deal of time whipping the stage with his microphone cord and at one point took off his shirt. Anyone else have commentary about the show?

I'll be seeing him again tonight and in Vegas on the 19th, so I'll be sure to provide a comparison between the three. If any of you can see him, you should. He's really still got all his magic!

A friend of mine e-mailed me about the lousy sound and also said the security ppl. were acting like idiots! But Nick managed to get on the stage! Good for him! Anyone else have an opinion on the security "problem" last night?

I just got back from the Saturday show and it was great. High point was "Half A Person". The personnel at Maritime Hall were atrocious. The most consistently pleasant venue in San Francisco continues to be Great American Music Hall. Saw Gene there 2 years ago - wonderful. The only disappointment for me, though, was that I thoroughly LOVED the opening act, Sack. When I went to buy a CD after the show, they were sold out. Can anyone out there tell me where I can get a hold of a Sack CD? Thanks.

another note about tonight's (sat.) show in s.f...during the encore, over a dozen people charged the stage and morrissey was taken off. the song was abruptly stopped. boz threw his guitar down and (i'm not a professional lip reader but...) said "son of a bitch." thanks for ruining it guys. it was a disappointing end to a brilliant show. morrissey was as sexy as ever and the band was full of energy. "half a person" and "swallow on my neck" were my personal highlights. friday night, morrissey and the band seemed to be dragging. possibly b/c of the long flight, poor sound (his mic wasn't loud enough...i could hardly hear him), and annoying security gaurds(they seemed to be a distraction for morrissey). morrissey kept saying, "it's illegal, it's illegal," to all of those who tried to get on stage. i'm not sure what he meant.

The shows friday and saturday were great. I agree that on saturday the show had more energy. But the audience Friday was much more sophisticated. On saturday a dozen people ruined the encore for everyone else. It angered me so much! The group of people next to me had been waiting for Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me all night and they were very sad when it ended in such a manner. what made me so angry also, is Morrissey had thanked the audience for being so "gracious" and then they rush him later! He'll let you run up and hug him, why do they have to go too far?...

It was beautiful! A very inspiring performance. His band has finally learned to play the songs. After the initial drum intro, Morrissey was carried out, as you would a sarcophagus, by his bandmates. He was placed standing at the center of the stage where he grabbed his microphone and yelled out HELLO SAN FRANCISCO! Off of The Smiths catalog, he sang: Is it really so Strange?, Half a Person, Meat is Murder, and a very abruptly-ended "Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me." He had a certain flag hanging from his pocket for about 2/3 of the concert. Things said: "I was in your Virgin Mega thing today and they started playing Boxers, and everybody left...", "I just want you to know that my ass will be leaving town in ten minutes... be on it". So after shedding off his shirt twice, literally holding the hands of all those who dared to climb their way to the stage, and finally getting mobbed by some stupid selfish people who had already been on stage and had been ushered to the side, left in chaos and incomplete rendition. Boz seemed pretty frazzled by this mayhem and after pacing back and forth, he walked off the stage, throwing his guitar against the floor. All in all a great concert up until the end.

I don't understand why people have to act like idiots when it comes to getting on stage...we all want to get close to Morrissey and hug him but don't you guys see that you ruin the entire show? I will be at The Palladium both nights and I hope to be able to enjoy the show...come on people, let the man sing for us, don't rush the stage.

Whoever posted that the MAritime Hall holds 700 people is way wrong-it holds more like 1500-2000 people, depending on how much they over sell, which they ALWAYS do. It is just slightly smaller than the Warfield. I HATE the MAritime Hall-I won't go there unless it's something I absolutely HAVE to see. It's totally unorganized, and the sound SUCKS! Maybe I'm a bit biased cause I work at the Warfield, the BEST venue in SF in my opinion (besides the Fillmore)! The Fillmore would have been nice too, though a lot smaller. I think the only reason why he played there is cause they tend to pay the acts a lot more money. ANyway, I'm wondering if someone who went on Friday could post what songs we missed on Saturday, since it was so rudely interrupted!! Thanks!

glam: you're right about the filmore and warfield being better venues in s.f. saturday's show was oversold as usual. from what i can remember, "break up the family" was played instead of "half a person" on friday. also, the set order was different. but i think that is the only song you missed.

P.S. I thought the show on Saturday was great-Moz had way more energy and seemed a lot more into it than the last time I saw him. I wish I was going to see him 4 times on this tour than the 4 times I saw him on the last tour! I was also surprised to see Gary Day back in the band! And does anyone know anything about the scar on Moz's stomach???

I cannot stand those drips that rush the stage. I think most of them just want to be on stage, proven by the fact that they inevitably turn to the audience and raise their arms in an act of self-congratulation. its total ego and ruins the show. GET OFF THE STAGE !!!!

You're right Glam 72. The Warfield and even the Fillmore would have been better venues. Maritime was badly organized and had bad sound. Moz was great at the Warfield the last time in 97. I still loved the shows at the Maritime, though, with the second night having more energy and wildness than Friday. You only missed the last half of "Last Night I Dreamt" though since that was his last song and the song that was rudely interrupted by stage invaders. First night he also did "Tomorrow" and "Break up the Family" but added "Lost", "Half A Person" and "Trouble Loves Me" on Saturday. I had a friend who also worked at the Warfield/Fillmore (don't know if he's still there though.)

Jo <jozzer@pacbell.net>
- Tue, Dec 14, 1999 at 08:09:20 (PST) | #40

Yes, Jo, it was rudely interrupted! Having gone both nights, I lamented when the Smiths played the Greek Theatre in '86...everyone was so respectful of each other's space, yet we were all utterly enraptured, enthralled, and very excited by the peformance. Hence, no one was knocked down and trampled by the not so "sweet and tender hooligans" since Morrissey has gone solo! As for the set list, I think all the same songs were performed, but in slightly different order, such as Alma Matters was the second song, whereas on Saturday it was done much later on. One thing I would like to mention is, he seemed to be more into the Saturday show, saying as soon as he took the stage, "Welcome to the FIRST night!" - acknowledging the previous night was the added show. He appeared to have taken to the stage in a more fiesty manner. I situated myself to his left of the stage both nights. Although, Friday night would have been my best opportunity to shake his hand (since Sat. I might have risked losing a limb), alas, for some reason he favoured the right side! Anyway, Morrissey looked just delicious!
