"The Derry Stage Diver"
Posted on Mon, Dec 6 1999 at 9:42 a.m. PST
by David T. <david@morrissey-solo.com>
From Hugh:

I'd like to set the record straight. I was the Derry stage diver.

It seems I came out of this in a very bad light. What happened was, when I went to Morrissey I kissed him and thanked him for helping me on stage. I'd been caught and he said "Let him go, he's a good boy". I asked, "Can I have your T-shirt?" He shrugged in a way I read as a yes. Security grabbed me and I asked "Are you sure?". Same reply, same reading by me.

Security grabbed me holding onto his 'Canning Town' T-shirt and dragged us both to the side stage. I let go when someone gently tapped my wrist with a guitar and was let straight back in. I heard Morrissey's comments and went to the grey haired security guy that's been with Mozz a long time to check everything was ok and explain why I did what I did. I spoke to him again the next day in Belfast and he said Morrissey hadn't commented on it to him. After that gig, Alain told me to forget about it and just enjoy the concerts. I couldn't.

I would never dream of harming or upsetting him. If I did in Derry then I am truly sorry for the worse mistake in my life. I did it to create atmosphere (which Derry lacked) in the same way I jumped from the Glasgow concert hall to onstage speakers on the "Kill Uncle" tour. Belfast, Galway and Limerick came and went and I was still pouring tears. Did I read it wrong? Was he playing with me? This short moment in time had turned my world upside down. It seemed to me so unfair. During the Galway concert I reached out to him and security pushed me back down straight away, while Mozz said "Oh no you don't!". Was everything ok? Seems like it. The night before the Cork gig I walked into the bar the band were drinking in and spoke to them. Alain Whyte is such a nice guy and has made me feel so much better about the whole thing.

Even so, I've decided to retire from stage diving, unless Morrissey says otherwise.

Stage divers can really ruin the show. It's happened way too often to convince me that stage diving just creates "atmosphere" and doesn't make it harder for true fans to enjoy the breathtaking performance. It really pisses me off most of the time.

This poor guy seems quite emotional if this is the "biggest mistake of his life". I picture him weeping softly, alone whispering "Moz my darling, snif-snif...I never meant to hurt you, I never meant you harm. I kissed you ever so tenderly my love...snif...*BANG!*

Secondly...I ask, how anyone can "read" into anything, let alone Morrissey O.K.ing this guy taking his shirt, while a performance is underway?!

I hope Morrissey remebers this guy(which he won't)and gets scared of the Maniac Shirt Grabber, and has security grab him!ha-ha!

Hey Hugh, chill out a bit. I'm sure that Morrissey's suffered a lot worse over the years. We must all have been to gigs when it degenerated into chaos at the end, but I for one felt that added to the experience rather than spoiled anything. So long as no-one gets hurt, pretty much anything is cool. And we all get a little emotional sometimes when the great man is up there in front of us. I'm sure neither him nor his band worry about over-zealous fans - by the next day it's gotta be history for them.

I also wanted to say that I was at the Glasgow gig on the Kill Uncle tour and I remember some madman jumping down from the circle onto the speakers. The security that night were fierce, verging on violent, so the sight of this guy risking life and limb to get to the stage was the coolest! I think it's amazing that years later I'm reminded of it by the self same geezer writing in to the web-site!!

Take it easy, Hugh. I'd rather have over-zealous than indifferent, at the gigs, anyday.

Mute001 - I got the impression that Hugh just got into a 'tussle' with Morrissey and left the stage by 'sociable means' (e.g. off the side of the stage). I hate stage diving too, but I thought that it was a misnomer here. I hope so, anyway.

By the way, I'm looking for sympathy too! I missed the Hartlepool gig due to f*cking terrible weather where I live. I'm gutted.

Greetings Hugh -

How about chilling, just for a moment. You need go back and read your post to David T. and realize how crazed (I did not say deranged) you appear to be. I would be a bit scared if I was on stage in front of you. If he wants you to have the shirt- he will kindly give it to you. Patience...he is well aware of who you are and I trust that your kind gestures and respect of his personal space (starting now) will be rewarded.

Hugh,
Don't be such a typical wussy Morrissey fan!
@#!!! man, if you get on stage go for it.You paid $40 (or UK equiv.)right? You deserve at least
his shirt and a kiss (if you like that kind of stuff.)
PS Alain is a cool dude.

Don't let Morrissey mess with your mind like that. He is not worth all this insanity. And for those who cry because the show is interrupted by a stage invasion, get over it. How many times have you heard him sing those same exact songs already? If people didn't attack him I'd be bored to tears.

Hi Hugh,

I met you at the Derry, Belfast, Galway and Dublin gigs. I noticed you were a bit subdued when I spoke to you in Belfast compared to when I spoke to you outside the Rialto before the Derry gig.
You didn't spoil anything in Derry. The majority of the crowd was so non-partisan that I felt almost ashamed to come from that area(about 20 miles outside Derry actually.)Morrissey concerts need people like you especially when they are taking place in the wilderness which is what Derry was like that night. It was just very unfortunate that there was a mis-understanding about the T-shirt. I know how it feels to get a Morrissey T-shirt because I've got the very West-Ham Boys Club T-shirt he wore that night sitting at home.
You did not strike me as a thug or a hooligan and I for one know you did not mean to harm Moz and you didn't. It wasn't exactly a gig threatening occurance put it that way. So chill out people. I really hope you are feeling better about the whole thing Hugh and I hope you left Ireland with more fond memories than bad ones and I also hope you'll be making a return to the stage.

See you again at the front row somewhere and we'll get that photograph we were to take in Galway. All the best,

Michael Ferry

Hugh,

Don't listen to the criticism here.
While I wasn't at that show, I know who
you are and I heard your side of the story
coming from your mouth. When you type something
many people are going to perceive it differently
than you intend.

You talked to Alain and he told you that Moz
wasn't upset about it. I'm sure if there was
a problem Alain or Spike or Boz would have said
something. Additionally, those 3 didn't say a word
about it after the Dublin show and they seemed
happy to chat with you in the pub.

I didn't see you talking to Gaz at all so I don't
really know what he thought about it but probably
not much since everyone else was cool.

Hugh is a very genuine person with a very big
heart and this whole thing really ate away at
him all throughout Ireland. This was never his
intention.

You ARE the best Hugh,
Jimmy
