"The last great pop eccentric" - by John Harris, the Independent (Oct. 24)
Posted on Sat, Oct 23 1999 at 10:40 a.m. PDT
by David T. <david@Morrissey-solo.com>
From Geoff Hook:

An article in tomorrow's Sunday Independent offers an interesting perspective on Moz.

The theme of the article is summed up in the title and sub-heading: "THE LAST GREAT POP ECCENTRIC. Do we still need Morrissey? Surely no. But then again he may be the best thing we've got. "

Expect further articles prior to the British leg of his current tour. The Guardian and The Observer, as well as the daily Independent are among the broadsheets likely to discuss Mozzer and what he stands for, as well as offering the usual concert review.

The full article is now on the Independent website. Definitely worth the read :

The last great pop eccentric, by John Harris (24 October 1999)

nice article; it shows exactly why i'm a morrissey fan. i'm only 22, so i couldn't have been one of those depressed, poem-reading, tea-drinking smiths-fans... i'm a fan because of moz his ability to mix humor and emotions in his songs...and because of his eccentric lifestyle! i for one agree that 'reggae is vile', 'that one has to be by law black (or latino) to make the charts today' and that dance BLOWS! i wanna be clear about this; i agree because i don't like those kinds of music, not because i'm an extreme racist nazi-pig or anything. moz may have stepped over the line a few times ('england for the english' etc..), but hey, THAT'S HIM! 'the last great pop eccentric' is a very nice title and could be an idea for a new song or album title!!!

ps: jarvis cocker sucks bigtime: can't sing, writes boring lyrics for boring songs... so i guess i should say: pulp sucks bigtime...

Nice article, just a shame that the racist-thing is brought up once again, it was only the NME that saw any kind of racism in him, and that was only because he refused to give them an interview. Also, how can you compare J. Cocker to Moz. He lacks charisma, and just how many good songs did he write?

Morrissey is no racist, the song "the national front disco" is a joke, even the tittle is ridiculous. An the words "england for the english" are not said by the moz. they are david words.

and about jarvis cocker, i think he is great, and PULP is a great band. Check Something Changed from Different Class

Jarvis Cocker is just barely interesting.

there's no point in bashing Jaris Cocker some of the Pulp records between "it" and "intro" leave a lot to be desired but Jarvis has really developed into a brilliant writer singer and performer he's quite a bit different than Morrissey in many ways and that's as it should be, but he's never slagged the Smiths or Morrissey when comparisons have been made, like a lot of people have. and "intro" through "this is hardcore" have been amazing records! and no Morrissey is not a racist! conershop is crap! and they just wanted some headlines for their overated rubbish! many english indian/pakistanis have spoken out that they don't feel Morrissey is racist and that it's obvious to anyone who Pays attention to the lyrics (check "asian rut" ...'3 against 1 it must be wrong'). He may like the "romance of crime" a bit much but he's no a racist.

Isn't it interesting that the British press has long sought to deny Morrissey the freedom to express his own opinions on politics, music, social situations, etc. without crucifying him for it. Freedom of speech just doesn't seem to be relevent to the music media across the ocean. I admire Morrissey for saying what he thinks, even if he does know he'll dodge the bullets for it.

I discovered Morrissey long past my "angst years," but I wish he, or someone like him, had been around back then. I've learned to laugh now at a lot of the happenings that I cried about in those days. Thank you, Morrissey!

He is "the best thing we've got." The fact that Moz is still the subject of many articles such as this goes to show that he is still important to the music world and still makes for an interesting story.

Jarvis Cocker is amazing! He's funny. Pulp are a great band with a truly unique POP sound. The All Seeing I is something you should check out too. (am I the only one who likes other artists besides Morrissey?)

Pulp isn't a bad group. I just think people make so much out of them, when they've only got a handful of good material.

Some songs of theirs are good, but I just don't see myself owning anymore than the three albums I have.

And, sometimes his voice annoys me.

Well all we need in Music today is Morrissey. He is certainly a pop phenom.( I can't spell)and well I would like to say he is a GOD of pop! Well as for that comment'that one has to be by law black to make the charts today' I think that comment is a bit true but its those really crappy manufacture people making the charts today with the lyrics written by a teen(A hormonally challenged one at that) or an ex-group member of ABBA or just MTV music is making the charts ( crappy gangsta rap or Implant bearing teens). Look music (some) since 1996 has no technique nor emotion sometime the songs are just plain out stupid at that. As for the other comment ' reggae is vile' is well someone's opinion but hey reggae makes me happy when I buzzed on a Saturday Night! Ahh heck no one could ever immitate The Smiths or try to take their place in the music industry cos The Smiths had something that no one else had. Well Morrissey should come back on to the charts and and kick some boy-band ass and implanted infested teens ohhh yeah and KoRn, Limp Bizkit, KiD RoCk and Ricky Martin's ass too! Oh yeah and others too! Oh yeah I know this has nothing to do with anything but I was on TOTP website and there is a rumor that The Suede wants to work with the Backstreet Boys! AHHHH stop the insanity! ok ok ok well I'll stop bickering! Thank you for your time!

Peace, Love, Girl Power and Morrissey Power!

Ana -

I went to your site, fabulous! Your taste in music is too good. Two things really impressed me on your site: Bauhaus (always beautiful - Peter's voice can move mountains!) and Madness. I am a huge Suggs fan and have been in love with him since the first time I saw him in 1983! Thanks for sharing a great slice of life with us! One thing is weird though, I am lost on the whole Geri Hall, Spice Girl thing. Are you obsessed with her, the music, the whole package? Please enlighten me, I am curious.

Welly Welly Welly Roland,

Gosh you are such an asswipe!(Excuse my language)Sorry dude but I don't have an identity problem, you seem to have one because you are picking on girl! Have a little respect alright or Im going to really have to jump on case! I don't envy anyone, ENVY leads to hate, confusion and a really bad head ache! I like to keep my life simple and pleasant(spelling again)! I understand that Girl Power is a bunch of meaningless crap and a great way to steal little kids hard earned cash! But Girl Power ismeaningful to me and thats all that matters! I don't have idenity problem cos I really don't have I'm just me, a gal looking to kick some ass and live life to the fullest! And thats my definition of Girl Power! Well roland GIRL POWER TO YOU! LOSER!!!!!! Gosh you suck ass!

Whatever Happens, I Love You,

Yeah the Bauhaus are great, my brother is quite a bit of fan. Madness Rocks My World! They are really great I think they are a lot better than the Specials! I dunno but thats my opinion! Ok I really like Geri Halliwell aka Ginger Spice, Im not obsessed or anything, I really like who she is and her music! I love her the way I Love Morrissey, they are both my rolemodels! They have both (through music) helped me a lot through the bad times, good times and all the times in the middle! Well I hope my babbling explains everything!

Thank You, Drive Thru!

Sunny, the topic "is morrissey racist?" is not worth to talk about, but...for The National Front Disco, check the lyrics and try to separate author words than character's words. I even believe that the song is quite tender, i mean, it talks about a kind of youth man who is note very happy with his life, who is very ingenuous and who finds with his pals of the front something to believe in. All of this is the portrait of a large number of members of the front, not only the evil rulers of the party, or whatever it may be.

Morrissey adores the england working class, as an essential part of the english character, that's it!!, and some of them are "fronters", that's, i think, is why morrissey talks about them.

remember moz words:"if i'm racist, then the Pope is a woman"

and remember the jam and the who..they also used the union jack, and the spice girls...are all of they racist?

whay moz is always the "evilest pop singer"?

what about eric clapton simpathy for enoch powell?

(eric clapton doesn't matter, really, he sucks)

i'd like to explain myself better, but i'm not born english speaker (sorry)

by the way, i like housemartins, james, joy division, suede, radiohead, PULP, bowie... and the first bluer records, i think that their modern life is rubbish.

and for REM, i think they are extremely boring, and extremely predictable, mandolins, mandolins, some electric guitar and not understeandable lyrics.

in fact, i think u.s music sucks, apart the beach boys, some velvet underground and some pixies. i also do like some of the red house painters tunes (those under 10 minutes, preferrably)

if you think REM is boring because you can't understand their (great) lyrics, maybe it's because YOU CAN'T READ OR WRITE ENGLISH!

you're right, i don't live in your country (whatever that is) and that gives me the possibility to say: "RIMPELKUT!"...

feminism is old fashioned..and in any case shouldn`t be confused with girl power which is somehow, anna, the slogan for teenage girls. dunno, maybe because 14 year old girls are the smartest brand in mankind. the spice girls can sing (in the 50`s musicals sense) and dance, and some of them look good to. but what they have to say or their mastering of tunes and influencial music is just crap. but cool down. i wouldnt want you to waste any more space on this board.

Thanks for your order, please drive through!!

UK - Thu, Oct 28, 1999 at 09:43:20 (PDT) | #32

If Anna feels girl power than let her. Feminism is alive and well but is not always readily accepted. In some cases, a girl can feel silly, take for example if she initiates (against her better judgement) inviting someone (of the opposite sex) to lunch. What is she to make of a rejection? Especially if she is unsure of specific feelings that she is encountering, rapid increase in heart beats, deep breaths of air, the inability to think clearly. I think Anna has the right idea - steer clear of all the confusion and allow your girl power to lead the way!

LOL this is getting hella cool! Gosh you people are bitter(most). First off I would like to mention I really HATE boy bands and besides they just suck(each others)ass! I hate Ricky Martin and rest of the latin Revolution in music! Feminism is cool and all but I don't take that far (to the point where I don't shave my pits or my legs cos I hate men)! Ok it would be splendid if Morrissey and Miss Geri Halliwell would do a concert together! I really hate 98* cos well they are a cruddy boy band! Well people I like spreading my girl power vibe everywhere! I really get sick and tired of people labling me and calling me a Dyke cos I like Morrissey and the Spice Girls! Well Im not dyke I like men but men come and go and my friends are with me all time! Men (some) are just stupid. Im an old fashioned gal I like to be ASKED out on a date or being treated like a queen for a sec. But guys don't like cos I don't put out or whatever. Actually now that I think about it Im 16 I have never been on a date. Thats pretty lame but oh well, life has more things to offer. But oh well what can I do about that! I much rather hang out with my friends and just sit down and look at the world from a differnt POV.

Well I seriously do applogize for my bad language!
When people piss me off I have to put my foot down and take any of their sh*t!

Roland,

As for you seriously need to just sit down and look at yourself in the mirror and say how much you suck! Cos you really do! Be a man ( or woman or whatever) about things and let people do their own thing (and quit bitching about it)!

Look I Love Morrissey over the Spice Girls anyday! Morrissey is DOGMA to me and well Geri too!

Im Just a nobody, Im trying to be like anybody but myself!

Well thats all! Thank You please have a nice day!

My favorite topic: the treatment of women.

What can I say about feminism? I'm finding it depends more on the town you live in. Right now, I live in a neighborhood where two blocks away, women have been attacked by some weirdo with a strangulation device as they walk home. Another time, a girl woke up with some guy standing in her room, and a few days ago, some guy went into this girl's apartment because her door was open and raped her and severely beat her. This has been going on for a year. I'm very thrilled I live in this neighborhood, and it's not the wrong side of the tracks. For some reason, weirdos like college aged girls.

Then, we move onto the clubs and bars that are full of 'players'. They have lame pick up lines, or even better yet, they ignore you because they are after a well aerobicized blond from one of the sororities. I know of one girl who is very outgoing and nice that is staying with her boyfriend even though he is driving her nuts because it took her a long time just to find someone to date. I don't fault people if they don't want serious relationships, by why do they feel like they need to make up stupid stories about Jonathan Richman singing at his friend's wedding several years ago? That is so insulting. Why not wave around keys to your private jet plane to see if I start drooling?

I don't know about girl power. There is nothing very politically active about that statement. It implies that it is something you have and not something you exert. The Spice Girl's success was basically given to them by the record industry. Without their auditioning for the roles, they would be anyone else off the streets.

As for girls asking guys out, yes, but I have not done it in years, and guys seem less kind about the way they go about rejecting you.

the male of the species is (unfortunately) the natural predator (yes!!) of the female of the species. it is just so SAD that females (of any age) are not safe to walk the streets at night alone (aw come on guys, well some of you, don't you think that is just SAD...?). i'm female and i've been afraid most of my life. roland (being a male), talk to me about something you understand, not something that is fashionable. girl power should be a reality and not just for teenage girls (although if it means i have to listen to the spice girls...i'm outta here).

Actually, there are/were many cultures where the women were the more valued members and were also the hunters and warriors while the men cared for the children. There is nothing genetic telling us that we have to be this way. It's all cultural and wimpy pop culture psychology that sells many "Men are from Mar/Women are from Venus" books.

although your english maybe is brilliant, your use of it makes it vile.

respect us a little, there are a lot of spanish-speakers (mexicans, north-americans, spanish from spain like me, etc...) who have to do a little effort to read and to appreciate moz and other brilliant english lyricists. You have this easier than me, i envy you.

but i don't envy you of being so stupid to think that spanish=ricky martin, julio iglesias.

thanks to my spanish, i can read Miguel de Cervantes, Francisco de Quevedo, Lope de Vega and all the geniuses from the spanish literature golden age (s XVI-XVII) and of course i can comunicate with millions of people at south, central and north america, philippines, and a large number of places in africa and asia.

why the hell do you think i'm from the netherlands? (i'm not even going to tell you where i'm from if you can't even read it!!!!) and what the hell are you babbling on about this racist issue you clearly have; i wrote beneath the text that it didn't say anything racist or diminishing! and who in god's name said i was referring to geri halliwell when i wrote mi chico latino? it was just an adress to you, my friend... you of all people should know it isn't really an insulting or racist reference...
i'm getting bored of your interpretations, find yourself a psychiatrist or a decent translator: i'm not even going to replie anymore to your insinuations.
hasta la vista, baby

I don't shave my legs either... I have to let the hair grow out so I can get them waxed.

OK, i was only asking if the netherlands are sunny, not saying that you're from there.

i can be almost as cynical as you, if i try.

and of course, you're not talking about geri's halliwell "mi chico latino", which you clearly are not aware of.

you're stupidly cynic, and you probably are those pople who like to hear their voice because they think what they are saying is witty.

ok, useless and minor league wit.

and about the racist thing....i'm still waiting an explanation about what you said "ok, you're spanish is good, you can understand iglesias jr, ricky martin..."

any racism there?

is spansh totally useless, then?

and about what you call "latino", you must know that spain is a very heterogenus country, i live at nw, and, apart from the language, our culture is more like the irish or welsh than like the southern spain.

but i don't hate or dismise what is no like me.

ok, i'll find a psychatric, and i tell them that is someone at netherland, belgium, germany or any other of those sunny countries needing him desperately

bye

I'm black, and I love Morrisey. I have to admit that one or two of his comments have made me slightly uncomfortble, but, the persona he projects on many of The Smiths' records is a kindred spirit. I missed out on all the fuss during the 80s (I was too young), but the fact that I discovered The Smiths in the 90s and was touched so deeply by them shows that what they stood for trancends time and place. I may not identify with all that olde english culture, but lines like "I was looking for a job and then I found a job, and heaven knows I'm miserable now" and the song "Accept yourself" captures a universal feeling of boredom and dissatisfaction that any thinking person who wants more than the pointless, repetitive existence that's called 'normal' life can identify with.

ps Stop me if you think you've heard this one before: Am I the only one curious to know if he's gay?

Andy,

Well I don't think he is gay at all! I feel he has other things to do in life, that are more important and relationships get in the way of what he wants to do. I for one feel he is not into anybody, he just wants to be on his own without worrying or caring about extra bagage! Well thank you for your time!

Anna,

That's an interesting point of view, and I agree to a certain extent. But, I'm intrigued to know the inspiration behind "Handsome Devil", "What difference does it make", "I want the one I can't have", etc, etc....Lots of people will say that I shouldn't confuse the artist with the characters he portrays, but I think the best artists reveal themselves through their art and make their own feelings and emotions universal at the same time.
Those songs can't have been inspired by observation alone. If he wrote them without first hand experience, then he's even more of a genius than I thought.
