Coachella reviews in NME, Billboard
Posted on Thu, Oct 21 1999 at 8:31 a.m. PDT
by David T. <david@Morrissey-solo.com>
From Pierre-Michel Doutreligne:

Yes, the Coachella festival is reviewed in today's NME. Needless to say Morrissey gets a roasting AGAIN, which is hardly surprising when you realise the article is by NME editor Steve Sutherland.

Basically the review acknowledges that the show was a great success, and Sutherland is somehow baffled by Morrissey's Hispanic fanbase. But he then reminds us that Morrissey's last albums are "stultifyingly bitter and dull".

He also says of Morrissey: "What a ham. What a liar!", and concludes the review by stating "No Marr. No matter. It is all somewhat miraculous".

It is plainly obvious that Sutherland flew out to LA with the sole purpose of getting the 'scoop of the decade', viz. Morrissey and Marr on stage together again. I am glad his trip was a wasted one.

This is the man who, when interviewing Anderson of Suede and David Bowie together, kept telling them that they were both SO wrong to think that Morrissey was brilliant. Enough said.

And from Geoff Hook:

Sadly, here in the UK the NME (23/10/99) has decided to use the Coachella Festival to continue it's meaningless vendetta against SPM. I won't bore you with the full story but Steve Sutherland writes about Mozzer's "stultifyingly bitter and dull" solo albums and brands him " a showman, a ham and a liar".

Shame really , because the NME is prepared to trade on Mozzer's lustrous, if fading , grandeur to use him as a tag on the front page. Alongside Noel Gallagher, co-incidentally, in a "remember him?" motif.

Oh well, enough said.

80 Artists Rock Coachella Festival

Excerpt:

...Cult hero and former Smiths frontman Morrissey drew the biggest, loudest crowd of the day with his hour-long set, which included three Smiths songs.

NME: SAD BASTARDS! It's a good job the Smiths will never reform- it would only make these pathetic clairvoyants even more bitter against the Mozzer. They really hate it when their ex-friends remain successfull...

Who cares what they write about Morrissey, writers and editors and fans will never come to agreement. I am sure that the artist knows who to listen to and of course it is US, the fans.

you'd think that 11 years solo, people would start considering morrissey as "morrissey" and not as "former smiths frontman"..at least in the united states where he has quitea cult following..i mean, his smiths years were extraordinary...but his solo work has been a work of genius as well...

don't get me wrong, i love the smiths immensely...they're the greatest british act to come on the scene in the last 20 years...but morrissey's work should get at least some recognition as something entirely of his own, and of his solo-band.

I can't help wondering.....why does people buy the NME? Have any of you read a serious article in this particular magazine?

To be honest, Nicki, not many people buy the NME these days...

do you really think the NME financed a trip to sandtrap, california just to report on a rumor they made up?

He probably went on a pub crawl with his travel money.

Still, I would like to see the review in full words...

Being at Coachella was the highlight of my life. Morrissey not only played two of my favorite songs, "Break up the Family" and "Hairdresser", but also played "Is it really so strange?", "Meat is Murder" and for a finale "Last Night I Dreamnt...". The story is old, but it goes on...

I like the NME. They have very amusing album reviews. I love the way they rubbished Mel C's solo effort. Also I agree that Morrissey is a ham and a showman and a liar. But that's part of his charm!!!

"The artist must educate the critic"

Because it's true. The artist should be up above the critic. The critic should be a fan after all.

Someone said that a long time ago and has to be reinforced...hmmmm?

I was fortunate enough to catch both the Tempe, AZ show and Coachella festival appearance by Morrissey. I flew from my home in Minneapolis to catch them, and had a great time in Tempe, the show was perfect. The Coachella show was also a great PERFORMANCE by MORRISSEY and the band, however I did have some very bad experiences.
I keep reading the reviews, and GOLDENVOICES reports that there were no fights or what not reported and that "free bottled water was distributed to every concert goer upon entrance". I asked for my water at the entrance, and was told that there was none, even though the promotion promised it. Also, I had my camera along with my pictures I took of Morrissey stolen while getting out of the horrible death pit made by some of the more violent members of the crowd for morrisseys performance. Two friends of mine were beat up for no good reason, and also someone stole my watch. Security wouldn't even let me go back to try and find my $600 worth of camera equipment. It was still worth it to see the Mozzer, but I think it is wrong for GOLDENVOICE to continue to promote the festival as though they planned it so well that nothing went wrong. There security guys wouldn't even furnish water to those nearly passing out in the front rows during the Morrissey performance. Oh, and to whoever stole my camera, I sincerely hope you are enjoying the pictures that I almost got crushed to death taking, because "sorrow will come in the end..."
For the record...I WOULD do it all over again for that show. TO GOLDENVOICE "You don't need to look so pleased".

I really don't care what the critics think! Critics can kiss my (excuse the language)ass. Morrissey is a true artist that is singing and writing from the heart and that is all that matters! Besides the only people that like Morrissey stuff is the fans and well these critic is probally a stupid fat guy watching Porn on the Internet and calling Backstreet Boys or Will Smith really good Artists!I give a F.U. to that bunghole any day!

Thank you and have a nice day!

Peace, Love, GIRL POWER and Morrissey Power!

I finally read the thing, and it seems that the people who reported on the NME report sort of...well, forgot things. The vast majority of the article was taken up with a review of his hispanic following. He discussed how greasy and rough they were and even had a pic of some girl standing in leopard print leotards with her greaser beau. But, I think I saw as many white kids in leopard prints and rastafa braids like they were in a Mountain Dew ad. The "ham" remark was not as bad as it sounded.

But I am fascinated on the remark about the world's richest rockstars emotionally blackmailing everyone into 3rd world poverty, and not really explaining what he meant...then finally mentioning all the other festivals in Europe in strange out of the way places.

I think the explanation of Marr getting up on stage and playing was a bit forced. Anyone with two brain cells working knows it won't happen, and with all their insider knowledge, something would have tipped them off.
