Coachella reviews (with pics) in L.A. papers
Posted on Tue, Oct 12 1999 at 8:51 a.m. PDT
by David T. <david@Morrissey-solo.com>
From Matthew Zolan:

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHT: With many in the crowd sporting Morrissey T-shirts, the performer obviously has a big following.Click image for larger photo.

Here's a very cool report on the Coachella Festival (Orange County Register) that includes Morrissey as one of the highlights. Nice picture too!

"The brightest highlights, however, belonged to Beck and Morrissey, though clearly the crowd would have thought the same of the latter had he merely waved hello. Smiths-wear was the attire of choice at Coachella; easily one out of every five people I saw wore a Morrissey T-shirt.

The typically detached King of the Disaffected was abuzz with excitement, though, obviously energized by the crowd's response. It's not as though Morrissey is musically vital these days — he's long since assumed cult-hero status — but you'd never have guessed it from the roaring readings here, whether of his own material (a bitterly sorrowful "Hairdresser on Fire," a whirlwind "November Spawned a Monster") or the rare Smiths gems ("Meat Is Murder," still laughably heavy-handed, and "Is It Really So Strange?" one of his most underrated tunes)."

From Alli, a scan from the L.A. Times (Oct. 11). No mention of Morrissey in the accompanying article.

Moz was in rare form on Saturday night. I must say that I was a bit suprised. The last time I saw Morrissey was in Dallas in the now famous "live in Dallas" show. One would think that Moz fans would grow older as time goes on. I was happy to see the younger crowd sporting the "hair quiffed and parted look" among other things. At least in this instance good, intelligent music is standing the test of time and will appeal to future generations...Coachella was a blast!!!!!!!!! Hope to see Moz at Coachell 2000!!!!

SO WHERE IS EVERYBODY!!! What happened to all the dedicated Morrissey "life partners!" Oh, I get it....Morrissey has headed back to Europe and now the "American Moz Fan" has gone back to doing what it is they've really always done before! That's listening to their favorite TOP 40 radio stations and working part time at the Burger King on the corner praying they make enough money this week to buy a new carton of Clove cigarettes so they can tastefully suck flavored cancer down their throats while whispering to themselves the inevitable..."I smoke, 'cause I'm hoping for an early death"!

You know, correct me if I'm wrong because I hope I am! ARE YOU OR AREN'T YOU A FAN? There's no in between! You're either a fan all the time...Or you're a fan none of the time!

Just because Morrissey has headed back to Europe doesn't mean he should be out of our thoughts an/or hearts!

You people make me sick! You're a bunch of POSERS!!!

Morrissey was great, but everything else sucked. If only we could've started chanting "hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hand the DJ". But no one could even hear us over that horrendous noise.
I hope I never see such an amalgamation of idiotic ravers, dirty hippies, and rank drug addicts again in my life. Morrissey, what were you thinking? Do you know what you put us all through? No wonder you left in such a hurry!

I am the owner of a bar Morrissey frequents. Between Coronas I tell him he's a fatso, and often toussle his hair, which explains his current look. One of his new songs is a ballad, believe it or not, called Capt. Burt, the lyrics are:

So will you hand me a long neck
of that Mexican brew
ooooh oooooh oh hoh oh oh
I thought it was you who said
I needed to fluff up my head again
well...ooooh...oohh
I must say burt I do love your heavy hand

Capt. Burt
Oh ho
You are crass and poorly dressed
Pass me the Corona

Etc.! WAIT for the album for the rest!
bye all see me at my bar!
MAYBE Mozzer will show up!

Captain Burt
- Wed, Oct 13, 1999 at 01:35:12 (PDT) | #16

In the bottom picture, it captured the momentous moment in the concert where Morrissey flapped his arms and started to fly. He had invisible strings attached and began to sing "On the Wings of Love" by James Ingram. He then tussled his hair and said "Does anyone have a Corona"? And then went right into a tribute song to Barry White--"Let me jump into your mix baby".

Does anyone else have anything "funny" to say about Morrissey?

I love him. He loves me.
And his song Capt. Burt is the best on the album.

TO: Not Amused

Hey man, you need to lighten up. I love Morrissey as much as the next guy, but you have to admit, what I wrote was funny. Sometimes a sense of humor is a good thing. I've actually posted several serious comments at this sight, so stop sweatin' the people that want to bring a little humor now and then.

OK, lil' fella?

One thought that no one has appeared to ponder thus far: Why Perry Ferrell and Morrissey? Okay so I loved Janes Addiction and yes I loved The Smiths (eat, breathe and sleep them) but how serendipitous that both these "late" front men of great cult like bands are now both flaunting around stage still clinging to whatever glamour is left from the days gone by. Okay, so I know Moz has put out some great stuff since the break-up of The Smiths and Perry has attempted the same but it just seems so scarey to me that in our "youth never dies" culture that we are still admiring these great talents that have founded fame atop great BANDS, need I re-iterate BANDS? Any thoughts are appreciated at this point, I am rather confused.

The hairline may recede, the blazer may be a bit too "dad," but one look at that bottom picture and time slips away. Morrissey may only play to the most slavishly devoted now, but he still puts on the air and grace and hysteria of Elvis, '56! Love him, love him...

There is a ton of stuff going on in the world of Moz right now like concerts and stuff so don't waste space with your lies. Your song was not even slighly amusing and it didn't even rhyme!!! I went and saw Morrissey Live in Ypsilanti and it was off the hook!! I took a subway from Vancouver to Seattle then hopped on the Greyhound to Chicago and took a commuter bus called Van Galder to Milwaukee and walked the rest of the way. And I can tell you it was well worth the walk!! I LOVE Morrissey like the rest of you pathetic S.O.B.'s. I guess he's right when he says, "Life is hard enough when you belong here." Can you imagine what life would be like without Morrissey?

Please, forget about his hairline for a second, and tell me how the new dummer sounds.

Is his pace quicker than Spencer's? Does he add more breaks? Less breaks?

Any info would be appreciated.

Ken, you need to lighten up like Not Amused did earlier. Same with you too Warren. I agree with Now Amused that Warren is known at this site for being condescending to everyone that writes something that doesn't fit into his little bitty tiny slice of life in Chespaw. And Ken, if you didn't realize that Otis was kidding us all, you really need to lighten up. Same with you Alison. And one last thing---If Warren responds in his typical, childish way to my comments, then we will all finally confirm our suspicions that he really is just a 14 year old that can't help himself.

I knew it!!!! Warren is only 14, and every time he says OUT!!!!! he has to go, because his mommy is calling him to the dinner table. Make sure you eat all your brussel sprouts lil' fella. No dessert for little guys that don't clean their plate. Warren reminds me of that Huggies diaper commercial where the kid sings "I can pull them off and on, mommy wow, I'm a big kid now"!! OK, I've sunk to Warren's level, but can you blame me?

By the way, I thought Captain Burt's song was hilarious. Morrissey doesn't even take Morrissey serious, so why are you all trying to be all stoic and Mozzified all day long. Sit back, take a deep breath, and just laugh for once in your lifetime. That includes you too Warren.

ok...I just have to say, i had the absolute worst time at the coachella fest. By the time Morrissey got on..you were either to tired or absolutely sick from the ridiculas heat. I hope Steven doesn't play an outdoor event again. Those who saw Steven perform indoors..be thankful ( like i know all of you are) I couldn't believe how bad the sound system was. After the 3rd song, you can start to hear the music. Not to mention, @#!!!s that go to these fests which are clearly not Morrissey fans had to throw stuff at the band. That was not cool at all, I hope to see him back in the Los Angeles area very soon, or in Vegas where ever I can see him in peace.

I hate the 'outtt' thing. It seems so annoying & childish to me. Someone called him lil'Fella earlier. We should refer to him as lil'fella. Bloody pipsqueak!!

Well, if Warren is really only 14 years young - why is he on the site during school hours State side? I hope, for those rotten American's sake, that Warren exists as a 14 year troubled child otherwise an over angst man (posing as a troubled youth) is wondering the streets of Chespaw - and if this is true then we all should be very afraid!

Iive been studying the patterns and trends of Warren's posts and it's obvious to me that "Warren" is a stage name for someone poking fun at everyone while he/she is at their place of employment. "Warren" is most likely, a Moz fan in his/her mid to late 20's who likes to play practical jokes and therefore has a blast getting reaction out of everybody else who posts here.

Have to get to class! I'll check for a response from "Warren" later.

"Life is hard enough when you belong here," and Warren, you don't belong here if you're gonna be a lil punk that can't accept that we might not have our nose as far up Morrisey's behind as you do. I've met Morrissey more than a few times and I can tell you he would be amused by the things Buck Toothed Girl and Captain Burt said earlier. You need to realize that a big part of music is marketing and those people are shrewd enough to point out that while we all may like Morrisey's music he is packaged and aimed at a certain segment of the consumer public and all this euphoria has made and is making him some big time loot. There's nothing wrong with wanting to have his children, Warren, but realize that the 80s have come and gone and there is a tad of nostalgic value in the fact that dudes still groove to the Smiths and Morrissey. But don't worry, when I was 14, I was really into a lot of 60s and 70s Brit pop, which made me part of the "in" crowd in high school. It served its purpose then. But now I realize my fake admiration for music I never truly experienced live didn't transcend time. Since you're only 14, you can appreciate Morrissey's music, but don't come in here and try to educate all of us who lived, breathed, ate, smoked and snorted Morrissey back in the day. I'm realer than you'll ever be when it comes to that, but I keep it all in perspective. Maybe you should think about trying to do the same, lil fella. Now, with that, the new drummer is incredible. But he can't touch Spence, in my opinion, that is. Anyone know anything about this new guy?

Give me a fricking break!!!! Why does everyone care how old I am??? For your info I am 15 not 14.
Got it? Thats 10th grade for anyone who is too dumb to figure it out. Why am I on the computer during school hours??? Because every classroom has 2 or 3 computers in it and we are allowed to go on line the last 5 or 10 minutes of class if we have finished our work. Because I am smarter than most of the Morons around here I usually (not always) get a computer for a few of minutes
