From John:
Also mentioned in
the NME is the John Peel night which they pick as TV
highlight of the week - "There's two hefty shows of
Peel-championed bands featuring a fantastic line-up of Pink
Floyd, Bowie, Joy Division, The Smiths, New Order, PJ Harvey
and Blur" It's on BBC2 on Sunday from 6.20 pm.
From Matt:
...in today's
(Aug. 17) Electronic Telegraph (online version of the UK
Daily Telegraph newspaper):
BBC tribute as John Peel
reaches 60
THE BBC is to mark
the 60th birthday of the disc jockey John Peel with two
nights devoted to his work. BBC 2 will broadcast an evening
of programmes on Aug 29. Radio 1, on which he has worked for
22 years, pays its tribute two days later.
Peel, once
described by Tony Blair as "truly a radio legend",
is credited with launching the careers of such bands as The
Clash, The Smiths and Pulp. He was awarded an OBE last year
for his services to broadcasting.

Just because he is sooo cool, I wanted to be sure that I made clear some info. so that Warren does not bash John the way he did, James. John has been working at the beeb for years, he works as a presenter or rather DJ for Radio 1 & 4, writes a weekly article in the Radio Times - he turned 60 and is still doing his bit for the music industry - supports all kinds of music - non mainstream / non middle of the road, he knows his stuff!! There was also a huge article in last weeks Radio Times on him, as well. He started his DJing career in Dallas Texas during Beatlemania, has been on Radio 1 for 32 years no less. I hope this helps out and I hope you are having a GREAT time on your trip!
