From Neil H. Enet:

I found this in a Placebo chat (from Placebo Online) that David Bowie hosted. Here it goes:

Bowienet Chat - Placebo with David Bowie 29/03/99

...

Bowie: Another question "any Smiths influence? Your cover of Big Mouth on the tribute album is fantastic."

Steve: Yeah, Smiths influence, definitely. We still listen to them now. I remember discovering the Smiths when "How Soon is Now" came out, it blew me away.

Brian: I don't think there's a particular sonic influence, but I think there's a kind of lyrical one Morrissey was also very confessional.

Stefan: What was it like to tour with them? I mean, without Morrissey

Bowie: I wouldn't know! [laughter] I was terribly disappointed, I really wanted him to complete that tour. Morrissey started work with me a couple years ago, whenever it was two, three years ago? He did a couple of shows, then got ill, and we never saw him again, which is a shame. I really admire him very much.

Brian: So there is an influence, yeah. The Smiths were often a soundtrack to every rainy teenage afternoon. I grew up in Luxembourg, where it rains quite a bit he even wrote a song about Luxembourg.

Hey,
Does anyone know the name of the tribute album?
I heard that some punk bands did a trib album called The World still won't listen. Is this the album they are speaking of?

The song is off "The Smiths is Dead" album. It is also found on Placebo's CD1 single "Nancy Boy".

I truly think this is one of the best covers of any Smiths songs out there. Placebo did a great job.

There are 3 tribute cd's that I am aware of:
One is a double cd called godfathers of change which has a band named Rosewater Elizibeth doing a cover of "I know it's Over" which borders on the greatness of the original. The second is the French one with Placebo that is a complete cover of "the Queen is Dead" album by 10 bands...Placebo is definately the best one there... Finally, "The world still wont listen" which is comprised of punk bands doing smiths covers is pretty bad except That it had the band "The Business" doing a great cover of panic...Morrissey has said that this one is his personal favorite on the album

Oh dear oh dear oh dear, Bowie is a god, what's he doing with these no marks and does he have ears? their cover was absymal and that Molko cun* changed the lyrics, grrrrrr! Only Billy Bragg is worth more than one listen, The Smiths Is Dead was a complete disrespectful insult to the memory of the greatest album ever. Here's hoping the rumoured upcoming tribute album with Radiohead and um, Oasis is better - mind you considering what the latter did to Heroes amongst others fills my body with terror!

Whatever your opinion is of their Smiths' cover, John, let it be known to all uninitiated that Placebo Completely Rocks. As much as I adore the Smiths, and think that they're all-around a superior band, they couldn't write songs like Placebo does. And considering that "Head Music" had many more misses than hits, Placebo's last LP is the best from britpop since.

Even when Placebo is OK, I still think that The Divine Comedy’s cover of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out is the best one ever done.

I wonder if when Bowie said 'fantastic' He meant utter rubbish? That's probably what he meant, because surely he couldn't have meant that truly wretched cover of Bigmouth. Yes, he must have misspoken. Oh, and I quite thoroughly enjoyed 'Head Music', but to each his own I suppose(except in the case of Placebo covering Bigmouth that is, that's just bad).
