"Isle Of Dogs Tour '99"
Posted on Wed, Aug 11 1999 at 9:54 a.m. PDT
by David T. <david@Morrissey-solo.com>
Thanks to Angela for the link to the Sunrise site which now displays info on the German tour dates along with the "Isle Of Dogs Tour '99" graphic. Also on the site: a bio in German and a small photo gallery (link from Matt Zolan). Here's the Babel Fish translation of the bio to English.

What is the "Isle Of Dogs"? Checking some of the comments left in a previous news item provides some insight from those familiar with the area:

  • Isle of Dogs is a tough part of East London. A few years ago it voted in a British National Party member as a local councillor (who didn't keep his seat for long).

  • Expect more minor controversy here in England with that tour title, The Isle Of Dogs. As the only other Brit has already pointed out in a message earlier, the connotations are too grim to bear.

Commemorating the name of a fiercely racist part of London is not, I must state, tantamount to endorsing the loony right but at the same time it just seems to be another needless attempt to court sensationalism. C'mon Mozzer.

  • The Isle of Dogs doesn't only have racist connotations; it also houses Canary Wharf and the Docklands which are business / enterprise districts with modern office blocks and chic restaurants and cafes...

Now that it seems the tour is going through, the Tour Discussion Board has returned. Post any tour-related / rideboard messages there.

Call it what you will. I'm not easily offended.

I think I see what resembles a close-up view of a leather jacket over on the right end of the graphic, but that would be silly.

houses/buildings to the left end maybe?

It looks like it's under a bridge or in front of a motorcycle or inside an engine or something. Who cares. It looks nice.

The pic on the Sunrise site of Moz is taken from a Rolling Stone, about two years ago, when Morrissey interviewed, I believe, Joni Mitchell...

Now, the Isle of Dogs tour is all well and good, but when the hell is he going to tour the US again?!?!?!?

I believe the image used on the tour logo is a detail from the photograph of Morrissey and Joni Mitchell that accompanied his Rolling Stone article from February 1997, mentioned elsewhwere. The Sunrise site also has a detail of Morrissey from the same photo. It is simply the top third of the photograph, which was taken in the courtyard of a Los Angeles house with a large plant in it. Odd.

Mmmm....Isle of Dogs

Well if you don't take it literally - it would take about 15 minutes to actually tour the Isle of Dogs - you might consider that Britain is an isle and it has 'gone to the dogs'. Moz will be touring an isle that has gone to the dogs. There seems to be a fascination with all things 'Eastend' so using the Isle of Dogs doesn't seem so strange. You must think that naming a place 'Isle of Dogs' isn't very flattering. I think Morrissey might find it funny. Expect a world tour of Eel Pie Island (Richmond on Thames) next!!

You can't just say the Isle of Dogs is fierecly racist, you know ... there are loads of different people there.
It also houses Mudchute Farm, the biggest city farm in Britain; a huge area of natural beauty intended to return some ecological balance to an urban area. It's a registered charity and somewhere that city kids can go to get a bit of beauty and play with lots of fluffy farm animals.
Alas, Canary Wharf Tower was snatched out of its grounds.

Isle of Dogs? Racism? East Enders?

Ah, yes! I finally understand! Ha ha ha!
I should quit listening to everyone else because it throws me off.
Somewhere, my 8th grade science teacher is appearing and saying, "run your face into my hand."
No racist connotations involved, is there?
Not even as much of a "dog" as who is going for a ride on one, yes?
Ever had any sex with Pollacks?
Funny how you are making a video, just like me as well. I'm on the opposite end of the technological spectrum. 3/4" tape. You'll have to pay me $19.95+shipping to see it...if you are nice :^D
