Johnny Marr Solo Debut, Beck Collaboration In The Works

July 30, 1999, 11:40 am PT

Former Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr was in Los Angeles laying the groundwork for his first solo album. Although he has been making the rounds with Beastie Boy intimate and Beck engineer, Mickey P., it has not yet been determined who will man the boards for Marr's solo effort.

"He's still talking to a number of producers, and he hasn't made any decisions yet," says a source close to Marr.

However, the smart money is on P., especially since he took Marr over to NRG Studios, where Beck is working on tracks for his forthcoming record. The two icons got along so well that Beck invited Marr to lay down guitar parts for at least two tracks, including one titled, "The Doctor." Sources could not confirm whether or not his contributions would make it on the final version of the November release, but they worked well into the night on Saturday (July 24) perfecting the tracks.

Beck's lair wasn't the only stop on Marr's itinerary. He also checked in with legendary KROQ Los Angeles DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, and agreed to appear in the documentary, The Mayor of Sunset Strip, that former Dramarama bassist Chris Carter is filming about Bingenheimer's colorful life. Afterwards, Marr and P. showed up at West Hollywood hangout Café Bleu, and Marr told pals that if all goes as planned, he hopes to have a record out by Feb. 2000.

The only snag in Marr's worldview seems to be that the mop-topped guitarist hasn't yet signed to a label, but our source assures us that "interest is high." Perhaps by the time he returns to these shores next month to begin work, he'll have a signed contract in his hand.

I wonder who will finish first, in the race to sign with a label (assuming Morrissey hasn't been signed, yet).

I'm so happy to hear that Johnny is getting productive again! Beck and him seem like a cool match, and I have no idea what to expect with a solo album but I'm sure it'll be interesting.

I'm assuming Johnny will do the vocals? He sang in some old band, right? I don't think I've heard him sing, so what will that be like?

Johnny, if you're out there...I wasn't into Electronic (no offense, Bernard isn't a favorite lyricist/singer of mine...), but rest assured I'll be buying your solo album the first day it's in stores.

Hmm...do you think this is going to make Morrissey feel competitive? It shouldn't (cuz art isn't a competition), but hey, good things come out of friendly rivalries. Better get working, MOz! = )

Just think how cool it would be to have a new Marr record, a few Marr/Beck tracks, and a new Morrissey record in the year 2000. The drought after Maladjusted has been long, but that would more than make up for it.

BTW, don't even worry about a label, Morrissey! Just do the record and someone will release it. You could always fall back on indie label Lookout! records, ya know. That label was founded by one of your biggest fans, so I'm sure they'd roll out the red carpet and all that. And they might even get The Donnas to open up for ya!

I don't think Moz is dumb enough to associate w/ L. Loozer. Yes, Marr will be singing. Moz/Marr/Beck aren't the only exciting things to look forward to in the year 2000. Ahem.

don't open the package

Gosh, I can't tell you how sceptical I am about Johnny's solo project. The influences he's been citing in recent interviews are kind of dodgy. He's a great guitarist, but he needs a good lyricist and singer to work with again. Give me a full album with Johnny and the PSB or Johnny and Billy Bragg...

I would love to hear Marr's solo project. I was never really into Electronic (no offense to Bernard or Johnny). I Know I'm speaking for alot of people when I say, " Isn't it kinda strange that Morrissey and Johnny haven't ran into each other." If they ever did I wonder if they would say anything to each other? I know it's been said a million times, but I wish those two would just leave the past in the past and get together and try and work things out.

Johnny sung and played Meat Is Murder at a Linda McCartney memorial.I'd rather prefer Moz or Sumner...

I kinnda liked Mr. Marr's singing on the Meat is Murder Track, However, I just think that he needs Morrissey to complete the circle. Call it Morrissey & Marr (Like Page & Plant) and forget about the Rhythm section. They already got a new band with Aziz. Anyway, I would still buy Moz's new stuff and Johnny's anyway. In unrelated news - has anyone heard anything about a Suede, Blur, or Echobelly tour in the US. I NEED BRITPOP NOW!!!!!!! American Music SUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blur was just here like 2 months back. Suede is planning a show in New York but that is it so far. I know Echobelly will not be out for some time, but Bis is touring in September, Kula Shaker was just here as well. Bernard Butler is playing in Japan if your up for the flight then you can run across to Australia and catch Catatonia.

if they aren't thinking much about longevity, moz and marr should try signing onto factory records. yep, they're supposedly back with their third try at a revival of the label (the most recent [july 20-something] joy division live album is a factory release).

not only is the label mancunian, but i remember hearing that the smiths had an opportunity to join the label at its prime...maybe their new solo albums can bring on a factory revival of sorts...next thing you know, the hacienda will be rebuilt! new order releases a great comeback from their last flop! vini reilly makes something new! perhaps a vini reilly/johnny marr project?!

oh well...it's nice to dream once in a while...

This could be the beginning of the chain of events that will bring Johnny and Moz together again, a small scale project will do. And no, their future work will not fall under the category of a reunion. If Johnny and moz ever come back together it doesn't have to be anything remotely like when they played with the two "lawnmower parts". And their work together does not call for a structured band and it doesn't have to be called anything "Johnny Marr and Morrissey" will do, of course who comes in the billing first would cause a priority dispute. I would comment on Johnny's greatness but it would fill and entire page.

I have kind of a dumb question. Is the Johnny Marr that posts to this board really the Johnny Marr we all know and love, or just some Merry Prankster?
