JFK Jr. - "Used To Be A Sweet Boy"
Posted on Thu, Jul 22 1999 at 10:03 a.m. PDT
by David T. <david@Morrissey-solo.com>
Thanks to everyone who wrote in about this recent media usage. From Gerald Acuna:

I know some might consider this minimal to other Morrissey related articles but I found this quite interesting. On Tuesday July 20, 1999, I was watching Fox Files on the Fox Network when the anchor man was introducing the John F. Kennedy Jr. tragic accident segment of the show to be later on in the show. They then showed some pictures of the late John John as a child before going to commercial. And of all the music to put in the back ground they put no other than Morrissey's own "Used To Be A Sweet Boy". But I have to tell you it was only the beginning instrumental part of the song... no words. Nevertheless it was a perfect song to express those images of the late John F. Kennedy Jr. himself.

"Blazer and tie and a big bright healthy smile."
Indeed. What happend to JFK Jr. was just awful. There is no nice way to die but drowning is terrible.

This is truly very, very unfortunate. What a tragedy to the Kennedy family. I'm sending my condolences to John John and the rest of the family.

I think boy racer would have been more appropriate.

well, the 12 and six string, and electric guitar and acoustics in the background kinda gives that 'hills of ireland' sound...so the sound itself is quite fitting...

quite an unfortunate event

Girl Racer: apparently he didn't drown, but instead died instantly on impact. (Water is like a brick wall at that speed.) I don't know which is worse, to be honest.

Being australian I don't see all the fuss about
JFK junior's death and really couldn't care less
until I read this article about used to be a sweet
boy being played over images of his life. Lyrically the song is quite uncanny and musically
it's very mournful. Just reading this article has
made me feel more sad about the whole thing. The
power of Morrissey huh?

The song is very desolate and bitter in its simplicity. one of Moz most brilliant and personal songs. I would not have picked that song, unless I wanted to insinuate that poor JFK Jr hated his father and suffered from uncurable loneliness.

why didn't jfk jr take a shower before he left for martha's vineyard? because he figured he'd just wash up on shore.

I think its tragic what happened to JFK jr. Although he wasnt the president or some big famous movie star, he was loved by the nation. "Use to be a sweet boy" the song was a farewell salute to the Kennedy family. May John, Carolyn and Lauren rest in peace

It's a conspiracy against us Catholics,
why does every body hate us,
is it because Morrissey is proof that God is Catholic.

Perhaps "There is a place in hell for me and my friends" would have been apropriate?

All I can say is that when John Travolta dies they better play Death of a Disco Dancer.
