Placebo to do another Smiths cover
Posted on Sun, May 9 1999
by David T. <david@Morrissey-solo.com>
From I Marwood:

I had the chance to meet Stefan Olsdal from Placebo after a concert, and asked him if they ever play their cover version of "Bigmouth Strikes Again" live. He said that they couldn't, as he had played all the instruments (except for drums) on the track and to play it live they'd need extra musicians onstage.

He also mentioned having replaced Morrissey on the Bowie tour, and the fact that although he'd never met Moz he said: "I've heard he's a weird guy, he left everything to go home to his mum."

He also mentioned that they may be doing another Smiths cover for a French Magazine. He tried to remember which one they were doing but couldn't remember because he had a terrible head cold and was drugged up on antibiotics.

Yes!
Catch these guys on tour here in America--if you still can!

Placebo finished their American tour a little while ago. They just finished touring Australia, where I saw them, and are currently on a two week sabbatical.

I would imagine that they would be doing another Smiths cover for Les Inrockupitbles (or something similar, my french is bad), as this was the mag that did 'The Smiths is Dead' Tribute album that you can hear at the Frankly Vulgar Website

Placebo has sense of style. I saw them in Paris and they have something in common with the Smiths.
They are on the Velvet Goldmine Album aswell which means adoration for Glamrock.

placebo is very very different from moz and the smiths.but they are really special and great.
because after all brian cant deny outsiders.
but in the future they will lose their beauty.
the only great thing is what brian knows it.

Nooooo! no more cover versions by Placebo please, as if their demolotion of Bigmouth and 20th C Boy wasn't bad enough! That whole Smiths Is Dead album was an abortion from start to finish, only Billy Bragg was anywhere near good, and Placebo changed the lyrics! Nooo Molko noooo!

I'm french and don't speak flently so sorry for the following words...
Two years ago I'de buy tickets on the Bowie tour in Paris just to see Morrissey. But as Marwood said, Placebo replaced Moz without notice. It was the first time I listen Placebo. Few weeks later I saw them another time on live at the FNAC for a free show (the FNAC is a big music-store the same as Virgin in France, remember Morrissey came here for a meeting few months before, but I didn't know this!)at this time only 100 peoples came to listen Placebo, imagine this today!
Now I like Placebo and their version of "Bigmouth Stikes again" on the album "The Smiths is Dead" from Les Inrockuptibles mag is not so bad, I also appreciate "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" from Supergrass on the same album.

Undoubtedly, the best cover in the album is “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” by The Divine Comedy. God save Neil Hannon!!!
