Lloyd Cole mentions Morrissey
Posted on Sun, Mar 21 1999
by David T. <david@Morrissey-solo.com>

From Bar Shalom:
...I just finished reading an interview Lloyd Cole gave to an Israeli journalist (of Tarbut Ma`ariv) on 19/3/99. Cole had his golden years with the Commotions in the time Moz had them with the Smiths. He's been a solo artist since 1990.

Q: It's impossible to ignore the timing when they compared you to Morrissey. He was God, while you became the one everybody's attacking.
A: Because Morrissey represented everything pop journalists dreamed upon. He was a very non-positive figure, he was angry, he suffered,  he criticized everyone, he was very arrogant - everything you need to make headlines...

and later on:

Q: So for once and for all, was there a prestige competition between the Commotions and the Smiths?
A: people will always say there is none, and there is, always. It's the rule of this profession. We didn't stand a chance concerning the critics, but listeners in those years, when asked, placed the Smiths first and us second, except in 1984, when we were first and they were second.

Comments / Notes

I saw Lloyd Cole at the Bluebird theater in Denver around four months ago and I asked him what the deal was with him and Moz and he said simply the he and Moz appeciated each other's stuff and that was it. On the subject of Lloyd however I told him how I was happy that he got one of his song's in the Something About Mary movie and he told me that the director wanted to put like seven of Lloyd's songs in there and to which Lloyd had stated that " It would have meant more money for me", but he didn't want to say anything else except that aparently the director is a big fan of his.

I think the album Love Story by Lloyd Cole is great.

Strange Lloyd should say that, I always thought that The Wedding Present were The Smiths fans second favourite band, at least that's how it seemed at the time. Love Story is a great album though, but not as good as the Commotions greatest hits.

Lloyd could be right about 1984. "Rattlesnakes" was a more self-assured and perhaps better debut than "The Smiths". As for the Wedding Present, they were Smiths fans second favourite band after the breakup. The Commotions were their contemporaries.

I have to thank Lloyd Cole: I heard the single "Rattlesnakes" on the radio and I thought, it wouls be performed by The Smiths, because the voice sounded "similar" to the one in "What difference...". So I bought "Hatful of Hollow", and it was great, although there was no "Rattlesnakes" on it. Lloyd, you made me to a Smiths-Fan!

Well, I´d like to thank both Moz and Lloyd for having saved me in the mid-8Ts with GREAT music. But it´s a fact that Moz is closer to god than Lloyd ever could be.

This Lloyd guy sucks a**. Morrissey is nothing like what Lloyd says he is, MOZ is a very blunt person thats why I appreciate him for being that way. I also feel Morrissey is actually very honest about everything. Ok!
