The Smiths – a tribute - Proof Spirit
    BY AIDEN ⋅ MAY 13, 2013

t was thirty years ago that a band from Manchester released their first single ‘Hand In Glove’. For the next four years they released the songs that made me laugh, made me cry and definitely changed my life even if they maybe didn’t save it. I’m not going to try and tell you how great they were – either you already know or my words won’t persuade you. However, to me, they are in a class of their own and no band can ever touch them. This is my tribute. So thank you, to Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce: The Smiths.

UPDATE 16th May – Since posting this piece I have had many enquiries about possible prints – I am looking into it now and hope to be able to bring you news very soon. I’ll announce any developments here and ...

Johnny Marr on His Solo Debut and All Those Smiths Reunion Rumors - RollingStone
'I've probably been asked about a reunion about 8,936 times'

    Excerpt:

Hearing Marr sing Smiths classics like "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" and "How Soon Is Now?" is a little bizarre for fans so used to Morrissey's distinct vocals, but the guitarist enjoys his new role as a frontman. "You have more direct contact with the audience," he says. "When you're at the microphone, you can be more communicative. If I'm just playing guitar, I'm not likely to grab the microphone out of the singer's hands and start talking. That would be rude."

Even though he's willing to perform old Smiths songs, a reunion of the band remains a virtual impossibility. "I've probably been asked about a reunion about 8,936 times," ...

Readers' Poll: 10 Bands Who Should Enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 - Rolling Stone
Your picks include Chicago, Deep Purple and the Smiths

    Excerpt:

    2. The Smiths

Imagine the chaos that would erupt were the Smiths to ever get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It would make the Guns N' Roses situation seem like a bunch of hippies singing "Kumbaya" around a campfire. Many bands are able to put aside decades of hatred for one night, but the Smiths aren't one of those bands. Morrissey would probably write about 17 public letters about his loathing of the institution, and those will only be the ones before he learns they serve meat at the dinner. Needless to say, they deserve it more than just about any other group of the 1980s, but these are people who truly hate each other. Morrissey ...

    UPDATE May 9:

    jushardlow posts:

Hi, I was the researcher on this documentary ... it's called "Not like any other Love" The Smiths: A Culture Show Special and it's on this sunday (12th May) at 11pm BBC2. Correct - It's presented by Tim Samuels. Amy Lame, Simon Armitage, Stuart Maconie, Wayne Hemingway, Noel Gallagher, Charles Hazelwood, Jo Slee and Kerry McCarthy feature. It's a half hour film on the band's cultural legacy .... a film by fans for fans! Salford Lads Club were kind enough to let us film in The Smiths Room, and interviews also took place in London and York. Lots of great archive too from the BBC, Steve at Soundsville International .... and Jonathan Barnett, Hetty Church and Grant Showbiz.

Not Like Any Other Love: The Smiths - BBC 2

    DURATION: 30 MINUTES
It's 30 years since Manchester four-piece The Smiths changed the face of British pop with their debut single Hand In Glove. In this half-hour Culture Show special, fellow Mancunian and lifelong fan Tim Samuels sets out to find out why The Smiths have ...

    Margaret Thatcher - true-to-you.net
    9 April 2013

The difficulty with giving a comment on Margaret Thatcher's death to the British tabloids is that, no matter how calmly and measuredly you speak, the comment must be reported as an "outburst" or an "explosive attack" if your view is not pro-establishment. If you reference "the Malvinas", it will be switched to "the Falklands", and your "Thatcher" will be softened to a "Maggie." This is generally how things are structured in a non-democratic society. Thatcher's name must be protected not because of all the wrong that she had done, but because the people around her allowed her to do it, and therefore any criticism of Thatcher throws a dangerously absurd light on the entire machinery of British politics. Thatcher was not a strong or formidable leader. She simply did not give a shit about people, and this ...
