Morrissey on Bowie: "fanatically homosexual" in today's 'Times'

There's a delicious double page cover spread on David Bowie and the 'StationToStation' Redux in todays 'Times' Playlist suppplement. As well as a Cameron Crowe piece wriiten for the liner notes, there are several commendations from famous fans, among them Morrissey ~

" Morrissey on Bowie’s elegant femininity:
When he launched himself on 'Top of the Pops' and 'Lift Off with Ayshea' singing Starman, there was no doubt that this was fanatically homosexual; it was a darker force and it was in Bowie’s eyes, his mouth, his voice, and it was menace and he really didn’t care at all about dislodging people. Bowie had an elegant femininity about him, which suddenly made Bolan seem too short to sit at the table. And that, I’m afraid, was that."

That quote is certainly new to me.

Weller also contributes, emphasising that young Paul was always a right lad, not a poof, but he still liked Bowie The others are Annie Lennox and Tracey Emin.

Apparently, there's additional stuff on-line, but I'm not a Times online subscriber, so I don't know if there's any further Moz-ness.

Collective Arts Worldwide - CAW - is a novel art movement that exhibits a number of select artists both online and in galleries. Amongst the elect is James B. Salter with his collection entitled 'Cowboymod' which portrays Morrissey in various poses in a passport photo booth.

The photos and the story of how they came to be can be viewed on the website - cawgallery.co.uk.

From the forums, a related thread was posted in 2006 - which includes a lovely YouTube montage by the artist.

Manchester Rock Great James Returns to South Florida After 13 Years Away - Broward-Palm Beach New Times

Excerpt:

...Just don't mention to lead singer Tim Booth the "next Smiths" or, worse still, the "second-rate Smiths" designations that were pinned on the band by the English press.

"It might be fair to say we influenced them," says the cordial Booth during a call from Brighton Beach. First off, Booth mentions that his group was formed in 1982 — one year before the Smiths. He also points out that Morrissey himself was a huge fan of the band, proclaiming James one of the best bands in the world in 1983 and covering the group's discordantly frantic folk track "What's the World" in 1987 on the Smiths' cassette single for "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish."

Booth, who feels that Joy Division and Patti Smith would be much more obvious influences on James' sound, does not have one bad word to say about the king of mope or his quartet, however. He doesn't normally set the record straight on this topic, because the Smiths were extremely supportive of his band early on. "They got famous first and then tried to get us famous," he adds. "All part of a great legacy of Manchester bands looking after each other." After being lent a hand by the Smiths and former Factory Records labelmates New Order, James paid it forward to fellow Mancurian groups the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses, taking them on the road when they were first coming up.

The people must be heard!
---
Excerpt:

So with the understanding that band and singer will never be free of eachother, a double-headed How To Buy challenge: what are the best Morrissey and Smiths albums? Are all the Smiths records better than Morrissey's? (Answer - no) What's the best Smiths LP, Strangeways Here We Come or The Queen Is Dead? What's Mozzer's best record? Vauxhall And I? Viva Hate? Which comps or live sets are vital? And is anyone going to give it up for Kill Uncle? Tell us, please.

As ever, the best comments and recommendations will appear in the magazine. Cheers!

You can buy Setting Fires "EP1" on itunes and amazon worldwide. http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/id390833918

Setting Fires is a collaboration between two veteran songsmiths, Alain Whyte and Mat Devine. Alain Whyte is best known for being Morrissey’s main songwriter from 1991-present, and his lead guitarist for over 13 years. Mat Devine has been the frontman and principle songwriter for alternative rock group Kill Hannah since 1996. The two of them met in the summer of 2009 during a rare pocket of free time, and started to experiment on writing songs together without any plans of recording in mind. The chemistry between Whyte and Devine was instantaneous and they started writing song after song, realizing that this was not something to push aside. During that week Setting Fires was born. Quickly assembling a powerful team to record the EP, they called in Dean Butterworth (Good Charlotte) to play the drums, Davey Julson- Rieley to produce, and Joe McGrath (AFI, Green Day) to mix the songs and add some finishing touches. The final result is more than they ever expected...
