Years Of Refusal enters UK album chart at #3

Very solid effort considering it's only a week after Lily Allen's release and the masses of Brit Award winners vying for the top spot this time around.

1. (2) ONLY BY THE NIGHT (Kings Of Leon) 22 wks
2. (1) IT’S NOT ME IT’S YOU (Lily Allen) 2 wks
3. (NEW) YEARS OF REFUSAL (Morrissey) 1 wk

US music talk show 'Sound Opinions' reviews Years Of Refusal
posted by davidt on Sunday February 22 2009, @01:00PM

PregnantForTheLastTime writes:
Chicago music journalists Greg Kot (Chicago Tribune) and Jim DeRogatis (Chicago Sun-Times) review Years of Refusal on their February 20, 2009 episode of Sound Opinions.

Kot and DeRogatis, whose show is produced by Chicago Public Radio and American Public Media and is syndicated to public radio stations nationally, rate records as "buy it" (worth buying the CD or vinyl), "burn it" (worth buying via download), or "trash it" (not worth buying).

Both praised YoR's harder, more aggressive sound, and Morrissey's return to themes of "miserabilism." DeRogatis nearly name-checks Morrissey-Solo as he mentions heated debates among fans over whether YoR is Morrissey's best solo album since the Smiths, or his best since Vauxhall and I.

Years of Refusal scored a double thumbs up as a "buy it" recommendation by both critics.

Listeners can stream the show, episode #169, at www.SoundOpinions.org. Morrissey's is the second album reviewed, beginning at roughly 32 minutes into the program. Show notes are available for viewing at www.soundopinions.org/shownotes/2009/022009/shownotes.html

David Walliams has selected PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, LET ME GET WHAT I WANT for one of his songs on Desert Island Discs. Worryingly he also mentioned going for lunch with Morrissey to Jonathan Ross's house...

Morrissey mini-interview in People magazine (Mar. 2, 2009)
posted by davidt on Saturday February 21 2009, @06:00PM

News (fortbethel) of the People Magazine mini-interview and transcript (Claudia2006) posted in the forums:

Moz mini interview in 3/2 issue of US, 'People'...

Catching Up With Morrissey

Still going strong 22 years after the Smiths, the British pop god, 49, has a new CD, Years of Refusal

P: You are such an icon of Brit pop. Who are some of your favorite British acts today?
M: I haven't had any interest in pop music since Herman's Hermits broke up. There didn't seem to be any point.

P: What's on your ipod?
M: I don't have an ipod. I have a gramophone that runs on sand mixed with water.

P: What are your favorite Smiths and solo songs?
M: "That's How People Grow Up" and "Girlfriend in a Coma." I love most of them. They're like lice-ridden WWII evacuee children to me: all they ask is to be loved.

P: Which of your song titles sums up your life?
M: "Life is a Pigsty" from Ringleader of the Tormentors. Life is a matter of making do, you see. It's all anyone does, in fact.

P: How do you feel about turning 50 this year?
M: 50 is unfortunate because you smell of attics, can't get comfortable in bed and need help to reach the telephone. In truth, 50 is nothing.

Morrissey praises The Gutter Bravados; Paul Morley interview on Channel 4 forthcoming?
posted by davidt on Saturday February 21 2009, @06:00PM

Kewpie sends the link to the post in the forums by thankyoudropdead (via Morrissey reddit). The post was corrected and looks like the original text was overwritten. The corrected text is below:

Morrissey and The Gutter Bravados?

Morrissey mentioned in a recent interview with Paul Morley to be broadcast on the Channel 4 in April that the only music he currently had any time for was an English band called The Gutter Bravados sttating "lyrically they are the only thing that comes close (to me)"

I have tried to find some of their music, but all the record stores I visited had no info on them.

Could someone please shed some light on this band that Morrissey obviously rates so highly, any help would be appreciated...

How do you feel about Morrissey dropping the F-bomb during his recent concert in Hamburg, Germany? (suggested by Ken Stavitzke)
I support Morrissey's response
Morrissey could have replied differently
I am undecided
I don't care
