Today The World Became A Lot Less Musical - himynameismark.com one of my best friends passed away today. jerry finn was one of the most talented, funniest, coolest, smartest, and honest people i’ve ever known. he was true in every sense of the word. true in his love of music, true in his friendships. jerry loved life. he was happiest when quietly making music he loved, and loudly making fun of everything he didn’t. when i think of times spent with jerry, all i can think of is us laughing. so much laughter. he’s just one of those guys with the quickest wit in the room. he also knows more about music than anyone. and i mean that seriously. he knows musicians, instruments, amplifiers, recording equipment, engineers, producers, albums, and studios like some people know sports statistics. jerry could tell you who played what instrument on which track of pretty much any album you could name, and then go on to tell you who produced it, who engineered it, in what room of which studio, and so on. it’s really kind of amazing. he worked on many of my favorite albums of all time, and helped shape the sound and direction of blink-182 from enema of the state all the way through to the end and into +44. he was into family guy, south park, and mr show before anyone else had even heard of those shows. and when my son was born, while everyone else was sending us baby blankets and teddy bears, jerry and his girlfriend gave him a tiny extra small black leather jacket covered in metal studs and ramones pins.
i’m sitting here now and i don’t even know what to type. i’m at a loss for words. nothing i can say will come close to describing what an amazing human being jerry was. his talent, his laughter, his love of life. every day i spent with jerry over the past ten years i feel like he taught me something new about music, or recording. or life. i think everyone who knew jerry would say the same thing. i feel blessed to have worked with and learned so much from him. but most of all i am honored to call him my dear friend. jerry, i miss you already.

Re: Say Prayers for Jerry Finn [message #366046] post by Ross Hogworth:
My prayers. My Love.
Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it onto future generations.

after 43 days of fighting at 5:25 am Jerry passed away and has left us to go to that "better place" wherever that is. the family thanks everyone for all the love and support for Jerry through this time. A memorial for Jerry will be planned in the next couple months and all are invited to attend. i will let you know. i said my goodbye to Jerry this morning with Jen and Karin and Jerry had the most beautiful, peaceful smirk/smile of pride and accomplishment it was truly amazing. it was the sense of pride in the life's work he did that he would never talk about or show, but today i saw it. mike fasano

| Tony Visconti on Chicago's WBEZ's Sound Opinions Friday night (Aug. 22) |

Chris writes:Well, it's not Morrissey, but Tony Visconti will be interviewed on WBEZ's "Sound Opinions". I'm not expecting a big Morrissey discussion. The two hosts, Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis, have never proven to be big supporters of either the Smiths or Morrissey. They never really tend to see Morrissey as influential as they do overseas, focusing on more rock and punk oriented stuff. Pretty conventional thinkers. http://www.chicagopublicradio.org/SoundOpinions.aspx

| Morrissey on KCRW - "Morning Becomes Eclectic" guest DJ press release (Aug. 29) |

An anonymous person writes:Morrissey Makes First KCRW Appearance on Morning Becomes Eclectic Friday, August 29 – 11:05 am The legendary singer shares some of his favorite songs and chats with Nic Harcourt The music legend will make his KCRW debut as a guest DJ during Morning Becomes Eclectic on Friday, August 29 at 11:05am PST (on air and streaming at KCRW.com.) “Sitting down with Morrissey was both daunting and exciting. He is such an interesting person, with strong opinions and immense musical talent. He does not mince words when he dislikes something, but when he talks about music he respects, he is an outspoken fan,” said KCRW Music Director Nic Harcourt. Morrissey tells Nic he just finished a new album called “Years of Refusal” and discussed his dislike of traveling -- he won’t fly -- but his love of performing. “Traveling is difficult, but the actual moment when you are on stage with your songs is perfect,” said Morrissey. Morrissey, considered by many to be one of the most influential artists of all time, chose songs from throughout his life, both his early influences and forgotten favorites. He called himself an “early developer” who began collecting singles in the ‘60s. “At the time when music happens to you and grabs you and jumps on top of you, you don’t realize that it will stay with you forever. You think you’ll outgrow everything. But with music, with artists, you actually fall in love. You fall in love with that moment, hearing them. And you fall in love with them,” said Morrissey. “You may push these things aside for 10 or 15 years, but you go back to them” Despite his general distaste for modern music -- which he describes as all hype and no substance -- his first song choice as Guest DJ was “What Took You So Long,” by a new four-piece from Manchester called The Courteeners. Morrissey witnessed Buzzcocks first ever gig, supporting the Sex Pistols, and praised their ability to be intellectual and deliver “hard fast pop music.” Two American bands had a big influence on the artist -- Sparks, who disproved the general sentiment that pop music was “vacuous and not very bright,” and the New York Dolls, who ushered in the punk rock era. He calls the Dolls “one of the groups that changed everything on the planet.” He tells Nic that he never wanted to be a musician, he simply wanted to sing and “loved the image of a stark solo singer on a stage.” Cockney Rejects, one hit wonder Mr. Bloe, Jobriath and Noel Coward’s classic take on the State of England, “There are Bad Times Just Around the Corner,” which he called “lyrically mesmerizing” – round out the list. The Morrissey catalogue in the KCRW music library is vast – with over 18 solo albums, both imports and domestic releases, EPs and LPs – not to mentions tons of Smiths’ records on both CD AND vinyl. The Smiths are one of the most important UK bands of all time and Morrissey’s trademark voice, theatrical performances and lyrical depth are unparalleled. (As far as personal favorites go, Nic loves the cynicism and catchiness of the track “We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful,” off the EP of the same name). Tune in and hear Morrissey live on Friday, August 29 at 11:05am PST or keep an eye out for the session in our archives HERE: http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/mbKCRW is a Santa Monica-based public radio station.
