Morrissey/Marr 3rd best British songwriters - Telegraph

50 best British songwriters - The Telegraph

This Thursday the Ivor Novello awards will honour the greatest home-grown songwriters of the year. But who are the greatest of all time? Altogether now… compiled by Chris Harvey

3 Morrissey/Johnny Marr

The songwriting partnership behind the Smiths was responsible for some of the strangest and most enchanted pop music ever. Tales of thwarted sexual longing wrapped in enigmatic literary references are carried on reverberating waves of sound. That indefinable something takes in kitchen-sink romanticism and a camp disregard for the everyday ('There's more to life than books, you know,/ But not much more'), but it always points back to true north, as in the classic How Soon is Now? - 'I am human and I need to be loved/ Just like everybody else does.'

Classic lyric: 'Fame, fame, fatal fame/ It can play hideous tricks on the brain.' (Frankly, Mr Shankly, 1986)

Manchester United wins European Champs League
posted by davidt on Thursday May 22 2008, @01:00AM

thetexasbloke writes:
Manchester United won the European Champions League after beating Chelsea. The win came on the 50th anniversery (year) of the Munich crash that Morrissey sang about on the classic B-side song 'Munich Air Disaster 1958' off the 'Irish Blood, English Heart' single.

The match was held in Moscow and United beat Chelsea 6-5 in a rain-soaked shoot out following a 1-1 tie.

In addition to being a b-side song, 'Munich Air Disaster 1958' can also be found on "Deluxe Edition" of 'You Are The Quarry'.

Down Kill Up Poll
How do you feel about Morrissey dropping the F-bomb during his recent concert in Hamburg, Germany? (suggested by Ken Stavitzke)
I support Morrissey's response
Morrissey could have replied differently
I am undecided
I don't care
The audience provocateur should be examined, not Morrissey's reply
