Pascal Wyse on Morrissey's 'cosmic tango vibe' - The Guardian
Excerpt:
It takes a special kind of insight to see that Morrissey, the famously morose former frontman of the Smiths, is at heart a tango musician. But Argentine composer and producer Gustavo Santaolalla, who is bringing his group Bajofondo Tango Club to Britain this week, asked Morrissey to sing on a track for the eight-piece band's forthcoming album. Morrissey, he says, has got that "cosmic tango vibe".
"He's doing a song I wrote a long time ago," says Santaolalla. "There is a cosmic tango spirit some artists have, even if they don't come from Buenos Aires. Tom Waits is a tango guy. Marianne Faithfull is kind of a tango girl. There's an immediacy and melancholy implicit in what they do. In certain cases, such as Nick Cave and Morrissey, there is a deep sadness related to the spirit of tango. Nelly Furtado, who is also on the record, could really be a kind of suburban girl in Buenos Aires."

The Smiths' The Queen Is Dead Explored on New DVD - Pitchfork
The Smiths' third LP, 1986's The Queen Is Dead, deserves pretty much every kind word that's ever been thrown at it. (Heck, we even voted it the #6 album of the 1980s). Dense and lyrical and paranoid and yearning, it's arguably the finest single document of one of the greatest bands of all time.
On June 10, Sexy Intellectual via Music Video Distributors will add a few more positive adjectives onto the pile with The Queen Is Dead: A Classic Under Review, a DVD containing a so-called "visual review" of the seminal LP.
Documenting the sessions for what would become The Queen Is Dead, the Under Review disc features both studio and live readings of every song on the album, as well as interviews with band members, the late Factory Records head Tony Wilson, a host of Smiths/Moz biographers, Suede's Brett Anderson, and the album's engineer/co-producer Stephen Street. In addition to the two-hour feature, there's plenty of bonus goodies, including an interactive DVD game. Please please please let it be "Pin the Tears on the Morrissey".
Hey, speaking of that guy, he's no racist, and he's got the court-ordered apology to prove it. He'll headline London's O2 Wireless Festival on July 4, though, which does bring his patriotism into question. Oh, wait, Morrissey's British? Guess that explains all that talk about the queen.

An anonymous person writes:Saturday at an auction at the Heritage auction house in Dallas Texas, Morrissey bid on and won a rare James Dean watch, the winning bid was $40,000 plus. He did this thru a phone bid, which was set up thru Heritage. The watch reported as one of James Deans's favorites, and one he wore during the filming of "East of Eden", and much of his early stage work. this is a rare time piece and a wonderful score for the Mozzer.

Stan Moss writes:To coincide with the release of "All You Need Is Me", Birmingham website Hagley Road to Ladywood calls for "an all round press boycott of any of Morrissey's future releases" in the wake of The Word/NME libel case. Here's a snippet: "Our argument, in fact, is that Morrissey's recent legal exploit against The Word magazine and the NME will make it impossible from now on to offer a balanced and objective review of his artistic output without fear of receiving a judicial writ issued through the letter box". And, the article continues, "[...]after some serious wrangling, Hagley Road to Ladywood is calling for an all-round press boycott of any of Morrissey's future releases". Interesting Morrissey caricature too, sporting a 'No Win No Fee poster' in the background.
