Word Magazine publicly apologizes to Morrissey in court over Quantick article

Magazine says sorry to Morrissey - BBC News
Singer Morrissey has accepted a public apology in court from Word Magazine after it suggested he was a racist and a hypocrite.

The former Smiths frontman did not appear at London's High Court.

Morrissey took Word to court after an article concerning his political views appeared in its March edition.

The star's solicitor said the magazine now accepted that it was "absurd to accuse Mr Morrissey of being a racist" and that he was "not a hypocrite".

Morrissey said he was "obviously delighted with this victory and the clearing of my name in public where it is loud and clear for all to hear".

Word's lawyer, Caroline Kean, said the publication offered its "sincere apologies" to the 48-year-old.

The closing paragraphs of the article, written by David Quantick, referred to statements made by Morrissey in an edition of NME last December.

Morrissey's solicitor, John Reid, said Quantick's comments had been "construed to suggest that Mr Morrissey was a racist, held racist opinions or that (as the child of migrant parents) he was a hypocrite".

'Utterly determined'

He added: "The article suggested that Mr Morrissey has in the past paid lip service only to anti-racism."

The singer, whose full name is Steven Patrick Morrissey, has also launched a legal action against the NME, which is ongoing.

The singer insisted the weekly music magazine had "calculatedly tried to damage my integrity and to label me as a racist in order to boost their diminishing circulation".

The star said Word had "made the mistake of repeating those allegations, which they now accept are false".

Reid said the singer was "utterly determined" to repair the damage done to his reputation following the statements made by the NME in December.

He also revealed there was a possibility that Morrissey would turn up in court for the NME hearing.

Well yet another fun time at the L.A. Smiths/Morrissey Convention! This edition had the return of a great tribute band all the way from Dublin, Ireland "These Charming Men" - and they were fantastic! The new location at Downtown L.A.'s Crash Mansion was a bit smaller- but packed to the rafters with fellow Moz fans!

Here are all of my Pix (99 total).

And here are some videos:

The "Ultimate of Faz" at the front of the line - they arrived 6 hours early for the festivities to begin.

Stephen Malkmus mentions Morrissey in interview
posted by davidt on Wednesday April 02 2008, @09:00AM

love of Wilde writes:
SM: I write with a filter of trying to avoid the completely obvious. Trying to avoid Lenny Kravitz-style rhymes. I guess I'll stray toward the more obtuse or weird image rather than a straight rhyme. If I can't come up with anything, I'm going to go toward the weirder. But that being said, it's all pretty organic in that I don't have to think about it too much. It just sort of happens. It's who I am. That's what I do. Like Morrissey or something. Morrissey does that. He's the way he is. He's not thinking, "I have to be like Morrissey," you know? He is Morrissey. [Laughs.] And that's how lyrics are for me. Whereas maybe David Bowie, or something, he's a trend-sniffing magpie, and that's his art, his talent.

Statement from Morrissey RE: Canada on true-to-you.net

Statement from Morrissey - true-to-you.net

In late June the Montreal Symphony are hosting a TV Special to salute Buffy Sainte-Marie's 50th year making music. I am honored to be asked to take part. I first bought a Buffy Sainte-Marie record when I was 12, and her music has always remained with me. In the 1960s, as a political activist, Buffy's lyrics were fearless, and I'm very grateful for all the risks that she took.

I am also pleased to be asked to join the bill at the V Festival at the Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver, and also at Fort Calgary in Calgary.

However, as we all know, the psychologically and constitutionally sickening Canadian seal-kill has started and is once again in full-cry.

The horror of the Canadian seal-kill is untranslatable, and although I fully realize that highly concentrated evil exists in other countries - Japan's dolphin slaughter, Iceland's newly-revived whaling, the cat-skinning trade in Switzerland, and China with just about every injustice imaginable - there is something especially menacing about Canada's seal-kill.

Loyola Sullivan (Canada's Ambassador for Fisheries Conservation) is a man of glacial coldness who claims that the seal-kill is "humane" - a view he might alter if his own skull were cracked open with a spiked axe.

The fact that the seal-kill provides a livelihood for fishermen is an insultingly dim excuse for it to take place - after all, the German gas chambers of World War 2 also provided work for someone.

The seal-kill takes place to satisfy greed for fur-pelts, and this Canadian government is happy to drag the global image of its own country down, and make it a place that people such as I couldn't bear to visit.
